Art Sound FM, Clandestino Canberra, and Live at the POLO, are joining forces to bring you a unique afternoon of film and live music! Hear local folk, jazz, world and reggae music and watch a film about the history of Trojan Records, the legendary UK record label focused on Jamaican music!

From 12 noon until 4:30pm you'll be treated to a film screening (with popcorn!) and local music - the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon and support your local arts and music scene! This edition has a focus on reggae, roots, jazz, folk and roots music!

This is all happening on Sunday, 1 September at The Polish Club in TURNER

A special edition of the show focusing on the Canadian rock band The Tea Party and their experiments blending non western instruments into their brand of folk rock - dubbed by the press as “Moroccan Roll”. Featuring Indian, Turkish and other eastern instruments and unique re-imaginings of Tea Party songs - along with special intervierws from the band themselves from 1997 era and more recent interviews with band leader Jeff Martin.

Tonight (8pm) on FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE – WINTER RHYTHMS – Roots Blues Folk and World Music

During the pandemic lockdown of 2021, a group if artists collaborated to present a series of live streamed concerts from their homes. Tonight we revisit some of those concerts. It’s a remarkable result considering some of the performances were recorded on their phones!

In the first set you will hear tonight, we feature Alejandro Florez - Guitarist (Flamenco Guitar), Suzie So Blue (folk) , James Briguglio (Kopasetic’s drummer - Roots), and Alec Randles (guitar).

The second set introduces Kim Yang Music 楊予菁 (Indie folk). Kim creates music for the soul. With her ethereal blend of sounds, she creates music that balances delicately between vulnerability and power. Her bushfire tribute Garden of Eden received 4.5 stars from Triple J’s Roots ‘n’ All Host, Nkechi Anele, who said: ‘Kim Yang is a force of nature, and she humbles me’.
Sri Lustri Experience (Indian Guitar Soundscapes) then takes you on a meditative journey through effects laden guitar compositions, synthetic beats and Indian inspired soundscapes. Matthew Lustri explores sonic experiments and improvised ragas ranging from the mellow to the psychedelic, joined by Liam O’Connell on effects/samples.
Rafe Morris from The Decideds (Blues) rounds out the set with his rollicking style of guitar from his back yard.

Tonight on FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE - Los Chavos - Latin / Ska / Reggae

With over 15 years of captivating performances in Canberra and surrounds, the 8 piece band Los Chavos stand as pioneers of original urban Latin music in Australia. Their journey began with the release of their debut EP in 2008, a testament to their vibrant live sound and unique artistic vision that blended ska, Latin rock and Andean rhythms.

Their debut album, "SuperMeng," released in 2012, marked a significant evolution in their sound and showcased the band's signature energy alongside intricate arrangements and an array of Afro-Latin rhythms, from cumbia to dub/reggae, merengue, timba, and chakarera, all while maintaining their ska/reggae roots. A remix album followed which paired Los Chavos music with electronic producers from around the world and resulted in downtempo, dub, tribal house and digital cumbia sounds.

With a new album in the works showcasing songs that have been tried and tested with live audiences around Canberra festivals and venues - this live recording at ArtSound FM 92.7 captures many of these new songs along with reworked versions of older songs.

Los Chavos will be playing live @ Smith's next FRI 31st May - returning to this local institution after many years for a unique concert that will also focus on the musical/lyrical texts that Los Chavos perform, giving the audience a greater understanding of how these musical traditions are expressed and reworked.
