⛈️ The line of storms has now moved through Canberra, bringing strong winds, lots of lightning and large amounts of small hailstones.
This video of the small hail was captured in Gungahlin by Sarati Shrestha. Video not for media use, licensing available via Severe Weather Australia.
If you have captured photos or videos of rare or unusual weather DM us! We love to see them.
❄️ Snow is coming down heavy in the Brindabellas this afternoon! At least 3cm has fallen at Bulls Head, with snow settling to 850m.
Rain is clearing our region, but lingering showers could bring a little bit more snow before clearing completely overnight.

🌨️ Driving through Picadilly Circus this afternoon, lots of snow with more coming down!
There's been snow reported all over our region this afternoon. For those of you holding out hope Canberra will see some flurries, it's unlikely to occur unless this rain sits over us for longer.
❄️ What an amazing snowfall, especially for May! We've had 5cm of snow in the Brindabellas, with more coming down.
Snow is now starting to fall over the hills in Canberra this afternoon, with the suburbs only a few degrees above 0.
I captured this video at Picadilly Circus as the snow started to come down even heavier!
🎥 Live Forecast: Early Season Snow on Sunday 7th May
Join me as I discuss the snow forecast for Sunday 7th May. We're expecting quite a good system to move across overnight today, leading to some good snowfall.
4th January 2023, Radar Replay
⛈️ Check out the radar view as the storm hit Canberra this afternoon. It really intensified as it moved over the city. Pay close attention to the Canberra Airport rain gauge and watch how quickly it jumps up.
BOM definitely should have had a warning out for this cell.
🌊 Rivers and creeks around the ACT are on the rise, with some roads now closed due to flooding.
This was Swamp Creek in the Murrumbidgee river corridor, which has flooded over Fairlight Road.
Uriarra Crossing is also about to be closed, with water starting to flood over the road.
⛔ If you encounter floodwater, please do not enter it, even if you think you can do so safely.
☃️ Normally skiing is something you would associate with Thredbo, but yesterday there was enough snow in Royalla to ski on!
Allison from Royalla and her daughter were lucky enough to get out and have some fun in the snow while it was falling and sent this video to the page.
☃️ Checkout the snow that has fallen along Burra Road to the East of the ACT!
This area is at a higher elevation than Canberra, so it got cold enough for a decent amount of snow to accumulate
🔥 Fire danger ratings are changing across the country from the 1st September.
The new system is being developed using newer science and will be more accurate. The new Fire Danger Ratings have four levels (instead of six) – Moderate, High, Extreme and Catastrophic.
🟩 Moderate
Plan and prepare.
Stay up to date and be ready to act if there is a fire.
🟨 High
Be ready to act.
There’s a heightened risk. Be alert for fires in your area.
Decide what you will do if a fire starts.
If a fire starts, your life and property may be at risk. The safest option is to avoid bush fire risk areas.
🟧 Extreme
Take action now to protect your life and property.
These are dangerous fire conditions.
Check your bush fire plan and ensure that your property is fire ready.
If a fire starts, take immediate action. If you and your property are not prepared to the highest level, go to a safer location well before the fire impacts.
Reconsider travel through bush fire risk areas.
🟥 Catastrophic
For your survival leave bush fire risk areas.
These are the most dangerous conditions for a fire.
Your life may depend on the decisions you make, even before there is a fire.
Stay safe by going to a safer location early in the morning or the night before.
Homes cannot withstand fires in these conditions.
You may not be able to leave, and help may not be available.
When there is minimal risk, Fire Danger Rating signs will be set to ‘NO RATING’. This is the white wedge sitting under Moderate.
🌧️ Some showers moving through the ACT are dropping small hail in Woden and surrounding areas.

🌊 Floodways are very full across Canberra this morning, with 50mm+ of rain over the past 12 hours causing most waterways to fill up
Make sure you stay clear of floodways, creeks and rivers today, as fast flowing water can easily sweep you away.

☁️ This is the view from space over the past six hours. Lots of cloud is covering the ACT and surrounds as an upper low and trough off the coast bring wet conditions to eastern Australia.
☃️ There is a fantastic amount of snow in the mountains today! I headed up to Picadilly Circus (the road beyond was closed), where 5cm to 10cm of snow had fallen.
For the first day of winter, this is pretty awesome! If we're lucky, we could see some more snowfall from this weekend.
❄️ Checkout this view of the snow on Hospital Hill in southern ACT this afternoon. Snow is expected to fall right through the night and into tomorrow.
The snow level is currently at 1200m, but will fall to 800m by tomorrow morning.

🌨️ Snow is falling at Bulls Head this afternoon, it is likely to continue falling through the night and throughout Tuesday.
The snowline will lower to 900m later tonight.

BOM Weather Notifications
📣 Some good news; the BOM Weather app now offers push notifications when Severe Weather Warnings are issued.
After the supercell thunderstorm impacted Belconnen earlier this year, one of the most common complaints was that people weren't aware of warnings - hopefully BOM's update to their app will help to keep you aware of warnings.
You can enable this by opening the app, tapping the three lines in the top right-hand corner and then go into the notification settings.
📱 I've attached a screen recording of me doing this as a demonstration.
🌧 Showers have been moving over Canberra throughout the day today. Some of these have been heavy, with rainfall rates of 20mm/h recorded.
Hit and miss rainfall accumulations have been recorded, with most in the range of 2mm to 8mm.
⛈️ 6:42PM Storm Alert: Slow moving thunderstorms are moving towards the ACT from the North-West.
These storms are likely to contain heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.
I'll have more updates as these storms impact the ACT.
⛈️ Significant damage is being reported in Belconnen after what was likely a Supercell Thunderstorm moved through. Luckily, hailstones weren't as big as predicted, with the peak size seeming to be as big as golf balls.
I have received multiple reports of localised flash flooding, as well as many trees and powerlines down. Expect significant delays on roads in Belconnen as the damage is taken care of. More Severe Thunderstorms are possible later in the week, I'll have more details on that tomorrow.
