Our Story
Buzz Studio at Byron Hive is located at the iconic Arts Factory Village home of the Arts factory lodge backpackers, The Byron Bay Brewery, Pighouse Flicks the boutique Lounge- cinema, The Budha Gardens, The Byron Bay Burees and more. Arts factory Village has a colourful history as the birthplace of the Famous Byron Bay Blues Festival created by Dan Dapel (Deceased but definately remembered). Further memorable incartnations of the Old Piggery/Arts FActory were Super Natural foods vegetarian restaurant run by world renowned Hare Krishna cheff K-Kay who before setting up the restaurant was the personal Cheff of The Beatles member George Harrison. Sadly missed by old locals K-Kay had to close due to personal health resons and resposiblilities. Then came the Cotton Club and its legendary parties. Later re-branded as The Buddha Bar and now The Byron Bay Brewery. My family rebuilt and renovated the whole property from 1993 making all of the above possible after Dan Dappel had signatured the place as “The Arts Factory” with some legendary thinkers and artists including “Collin Heaney” and “Brett Whitley” through the 1980’s before moving back to the USA in 1991. The 1991 Blues festival at the Arts Factory marked the end of that era going back to the late 1970’s. In fact I was there and was lucky enough to jump through the air off the famous old stairway to the lower venue stage and catch Sony Terry’s harmonica when he through it to the croud ending the set played with he and Brownie Mcgee. (great times)
I was an ideas person heading the creative department developing the Arts Factory with my creative Family (who upheld more of the Business side than I ) and friends and all the wonderful travelers developing the musical side and artistic Vibe with artists such as Jarrah Tree, Canadian Phil, Lucy Foster, Sahil, Bhadrena Rose and many more as together anything was possible. Artisans and creative builders like Danny Mazza, Jason Cos and big Spirrit Brothers Ray Brown (Rainbow TP Ren) Tai Bubba, Muki and influesces from Guy From the Rainbow Temple, Now My Uncle/Brother inlaw and many more, to many to name, plus travelers with heart also being key to the creation of the Arts Factory as a whole. It was and in many ways remains a big/little living, changing community of travelers and creatives.
Buzz studio Then only known as The Hive in all honesty started as a hobby project when I was primarily working/living The Arts Factory and also quite involved as a DJ (Genesin) and part of a larger collective putting on some timeless events & Dance parties prior to smart phones and Facebook in Bush paradise locations in the spirit of celebrating life and the Rainbow regeon where many travelers would party with locals and the whole eloctronic music scene opened up built on top of the percussion based Rainbow parties in the hills, There were several crews big brothers and Sisters that inspired me and us all at the time! Breto, Tone and Mel, Ollie Wisdom, Crystal Chriss, Squiffy Vision, Crystal Grid’s Tone Wandalla, Cuvey, Retumba, Bali, Urs with Happy People Productions, Vibe Tribe and Electric Tp seeding a lot of the Trance parties and a magic scene. Our Crew were the Bee Unlimited Sound System, Gary Arthy, Pete Robinson (first engineers and crytical to Buzz/Hive development) and Myself being the Trio in that Crew and of Course Magoo’s debut gigs were with us and took off after us with many more maluable evolving crews all interconnected to this day, though many no longer with us. As for Buzz studio With all the great musicians around town, The Backpackers and developing a deeper interest in music, accoustics and Audio quality while picking up a few skills myself, a couple of my best friends and I put more into building The Studio than innitially planned with a focus on doing a lot with a little and wanting to record Original Music with Bunjalung family, recording the traveling musicians that arrived at the Arts Factory and we built Buzz Studio/Hive to be worthy of professional clientelle ( Thank You Rod Harris, tech genius and James Heddle brilliant accoustition ) but still it was more of a casual hobby studio and became quite neglected when The whole Arts Factory went through some restructuring, I became a proud but challenged single parent while I faced health and chronic pain issues after a serious accident requiring Nuro surgeries and shoulder reconstructions then golden Staff post surgeries over several years. The studio sat and was on stand by, yet served many other purposes along the way. Back in High School I had a friend who was already at that time playing around with reel to reel recorders and A-Dat’s and his band “The Placebo Junkies” were rocking the back yard parties in the 80’s as well as other bands with his brilliant electric guitar. Every couple of years I’d send him a message that if he moved to Byron Bay I’d love him to be involved with the Studio being an old trusted friend, certainly musically passionate and experienced, well qualified in audio engineering and skilled with audio mixing, mastering and production to take the studio to the next level.
Shane Noble has now been operating here for a couple years essentially rebooting Buzz Studio, a few renovations made and projects have become more serious and professional. This week (March 2018 ) births our new beginning / partnership in “Buzz Studio Byron Bay” @ Byron Hive. Shane brings experience and musicianship to any project artists would require with a great “ear” he is also a great music and sound engineering teacher, session guitarist, music composer, easy to work with and open to assist musically with artists ideas and collaborations. From Hip Hop to Classic Rock n roll, Voice overs or film audio and mastering his skill set is Rock n’ Roll SOLID.!
