Australia’s favourite musical misfits, BUTTERFINGERS, continue to bend genres and the boundaries of good taste with a rare blend of obscenity (totally PG of course), wit & charm. From early in their career they built a reputation on their energetic & eclectic live shows that crossed genres drawing from hip hop, punk, reggae, drum & bass, electronica and just about anything that makes you want to shake your bones, into a cohesive mash-up all of their own creation. The boys promise they're working hard to make this one-off Small Fry Rock show 100% appropriate for little ears.

Ben Ely, one of the creative life-forces for the past 25 years of Regugitator. A Small Fry Rock favourite! We're pumped to have Ben join our final show in Sydney. This line up is a cheeky one!
Running times are kept nice and short for our small fries!

14/11/2024

Oh what do we do if the system is no longer working and straining the life support of mother earth... the utterly insane answer is make more money. Yeah of course... the minority rich can prosper from the decay and all will be a fairy tale of excess. Living large like kings of the sh*theap. Phew!

"But it looks to me like a reversion to the default state of centralised, hierarchical societies. For many centuries, these societies were characterised by extreme power vested in the leader. This power was brokered by a favoured caste, which drew on a justifying belief in the inherent superiority of some groups over others. This caste was empowered to treat other people’s lives as disposable, to criminalise dissent and inflict extreme violence and cruelty upon those who challenged the leader or his ideology. Instead of rational argument, it used symbols, slogans, ceremony and pageantry to reinforce power and create social consensus.

A centralised democratic system was always a contradiction. However enlightened the founding fathers of the US (or the liberal reformers in the UK) may have seemed, they created systems in which elite power would never fully relinquish control. These systems were highly vulnerable to capture and reversal. Only a far more decentralised, participatory democracy could resist the reversion to autocratic rule.

We have laboured for years under a folk theory of democracy: to win power, you must “make the case” for the politics you want to see, using reasoned argument. Voters will assess the competing arguments. On this basis, and considering the records of the candidates, they will decide which of the factions operating from a distant centre they will elect to govern them for the next four or five years. Then they will trust those representatives to act on their behalf until the next election, on the basis of presumed consent. It was always a fairytale."

Voters have never been swayed by ‘rational debate’. Only a genuine change in the way we do politics can prevent the march of the right, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

14/11/2024

Simple really... economics needs to evolve to circular realities, environmental considerations, climate awareness... and symbiotic co-habitation practices. EVERYTHING is going to continue to get more expensive the more this escalates. No politician can wave a magic wand without changing the entire approach to society, capitalism and life away from the profiteering of the current system. It is a dead husk collapsing on a plague of greed! Fools belief of sloganeering solves nothing.

"Three steps are needed.

The first is to claw back the wealth of the new profiteers through wealth taxes in the first instance, which would free up resources that could be invested.

The second is to kill the sacred cow of conventional economics. When inflation spikes as a result of supply shocks, jamming up interest rates merely increases the misery. Debt repayments soar – but inflation isn’t necessarily restrained. We can take inspiration here from countries like Spain, which introduced well-designed controls on essential prices last year. Targeted price controls and buffer stocks of essentials like staple foods, of the kind recommended by economist Isabella Weber and her collaborators, can work.

The third step is the longer term task of rebuilding our supply systems for those essentials. This would mean localising production, offering more support to farmers and communities adapting to a climate-shocked world, shortening supply chains and maximising their resilience, rather than prioritising profit."

From olive oil to butter, extreme weather is pushing up the cost of living and having a dramatic political impact. Economists need a solution, says podcast host James Meadway

Yeah MUSIC right... and plenty of like.
Andrew cracks eggs with THE FAUVES and fills them with the glorious colours of their all expenses paid kontiki holiday special voyage album Tropical Strength - recorded on a cruise ship that was grounded on a reef off the coast of Bali that fortunately found them in possession of some "all you can eat" tickets on one of the lower decks - so one can only imagine the many odours of contribution. THE FAUVES have truly let the genie out of the bloody bottle now... well actually - the CAN if we are gonna be honest. And now it has infected the whole bloody world with it's tropical strength. Whatever is in there though has certainly bedded the mindset of the director of this latest video to lacerate the annals of music video culture. Video tech is your modern day oyster. Shuck the shell out of it... and kick back on the chardonnays for this doozy!

Try Telling Someone Who Gives a F**k: In 1928 they banned Lady Chatterley’s Lover. In 2024 you can put “F**k” in a song title. This song is better Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Well, the book at least - mostly certainly than the 2022 Netflix remake (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x8wnt1y). By all accounts gamekeeper Oliver Mellors was an excellent lover.

TROPICAL STRENGTH – BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
When only Tropical Strength will do, you need a trusted brand. For all your repellent needs, try The Fauves Tropical Strength, now in convenient 12-inch and CD sizes. Guaranteed to repel all music fans, critics and lecherous industry denizens.

Fluorocarbon-, microplastic- and hit-free, The Fauves Tropical Strength will not damage you or your family’s hearing so long as you play it at volumes under 5 dB.

The album was recorded a week in Indonesia in late 2023, strictly during office hours. Later we roamed the Sanur foreshore like shiftless itinerants seeking trouble or some nasi goreng. Next morning we were back at the studio as if nothing had ever happened, which perhaps it hadn’t. Very few Australians have ever been to Bali so we relished the sense of outpost exoticism and a culture completely untouched by Western influence. Here we could work in relative anonymity, far from the complete anonymity that tracks our every move at home. And when we needed some attention, we simply had to say, “We’re the dudes that did that Dog song”. Pretty sure that got us a few discounts, although we had trouble doing the currency conversion.

It's generally considered that bands don’t reach their peak until their 13th album, which puts us in the sweet spot for success. Two hundred sales would be about par. Five hundred sounds a bit greedy. Over a thousand and we’re running a scam – change your passwords immediately.

Tropical Strength has 11 tracks. They’ve got lyrics but, yeah nah, who’s got the attention span to read a lyric sheet?

Un-Australians: Have you ever failed the Pub Test? Have you ever had unpatriotic thoughts? Do you laugh every Invasion Day when people tip pink paint over the heads of Captain Cook statues? You may be an un-Australian. Hand in your passport and let the government send you to Nauru immediately.
Try Telling Someone Who Gives a F**k: In 1928 they banned Lady Chatterley’s Lover. In 2024 you can put “F**k” in a song title. This song is better than Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Well, the book at least. By all accounts gamekeeper Oliver Mellors was an excellent lover.
If You Love Me: There aren’t enough songs in the canon about hypochondriac middle-aged men. You could sing “She loves you yeah, yeah, yeah”. Or you could sing “If you love me, you might have to kill me”. We chose the latter.
Only Wait Forever: Of all the failed, broken, disbanded airlines in aviation history, TAA is our favourite. That’s not what the song’s about but W.B. Yeats didn’t tell you what his poems were about either.
It Kills Your Worst Enemies: The Fauves Tropical Strength – it kills your worst enemies.
Moscow Olympics: In 1980, we were on Year 8 school camp at Mill Valley Christian horse ranch. Well, it was just called Mill Valley Ranch but there was a church there and they made us go to it, and there was horse riding, but we’re scared of horses. The Moscow Olympics were on concurrently.
Guitar Village: We bought our first guitars at Guitar Village in Frankston. We had a song called Clive of India Curry Powder on our album Nervous Flashlights and were duly supplied with a complimentary box of powered curry products from the kindly proprietors of the worthy company. Hopefully we’ll get a box of guitars this time.
Always Look for the Bad in People: Generally a lot easier task than doing the opposite.
Bursting at the Seams: It could be about middle-aged spread or a batch of defective cricket balls. You do the exegesis.
The Show That Never Goes Away: 5 bonus points for the first person to create a meme with our photo and the caption “The band that never goes away”.
Let Me Stop You There: Sorry for your loss. It’s a bit grim.

LAST QUOKKA take fight with latest single OTC

You never knew it was coming... and neither did did we. Sunk too deep in the couch. Anyway here it is... OTC!

LAST QUOKKA - On the Couch
West Australian punks Last Quokka have released a new pub-rock sloucher anthem: OTC or 'On The Couch'. An ode to taking it easy on our favourite piece of furniture, OTC is this second single off of Last Quokka's upcoming Take The Fight To The Bastards LP, due out via Valve Records in February 2025.

OTC is two and a half minutes of a dirty bass, huge drums and big riffs, an explosion of sonic power that accompanies singer Trent Rojahn's tongue-in-cheek rants about couches and classism. Taking aim at corporate media's attacks on those on welfare, Rojahn spits mouthfuls of fried chicken in-between taking-the-piss out of the parasitic super rich and reaffirming his right to watch the test-cricket in peace.

Otherwise you gotta get off the couch to LIVE as well... and now playing:

31/10/2024

There is a global rampage tainting this world at present - instead of humanity responding in a profound. imaginative and radical way to an unsustainable future as this current late capitalist driven system runs it course impacting the ongoing inhabitability of our habitat - there is a portion of the population obsessed with the artificial notion of financial wealth racing in the opposite direction to secure their coffers of gold and property... and damn just about anything to satisfy their sociopathic lusts for more - like they are blind to reality. Like they feel stockpiling vast amounts of money will inoculate them from the damages being inflicted on the world. These people only help themselves... and yet in reality they are their own worst enemies. It is an insanity as they refuse to give up this crumbling dream twisting all into a dystopic nightmare - all for personal gain and an excess of lifestyle that has nothing natural to it. There is nothing ordinary about this. Of course they won't even understand this logic as they are defined by their material existence... their entitlement... their greed! It is time for humanity to evolve... or as a species we perish. Simple.

"We need to build a world in which one can gain without another losing, a world in which kindness, decency and community prevail, where the fortunate help the less fortunate to avoid disaster."

The Republican candidate embodies all the worst aspects of capitalism, condensed into human form, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

CUSTARD here comes the sun of it all: latest album SUBURBAN CURTAINS is officially drawn.

The scintilatting strains of spring burst through every opening of your abode. Open your heart and your doors as CUSTARD are finally back on your street playing the songs of their life…your's even. That unassuageable politics of love astride that turgid love of politics… a class unto themselves. A feel for the charm of the blossom.

Latest double kaazzaaam SUBURBAN CURTAINS will prick your ears and have you standing with a bounce and a flutter before you know what tracks you. Featuring a small bounty of collaborators - Michael Lira (Darth Vegas), Serena Ryder, Maureen Hansen, Charlie Bedford and Lucy McLure - recorded with Chris Townend at MONA's Frying Pan studio in Hobart, mixed by Glenn at the beach… feel the joy, season, and sun of it all.

GLENN notes: "I was at work researching art museum / human digital interfaces when I stumbled upon the new recording studio at MONA with an old EMI/Abbey Road desk plus a Studer 8 track tape deck. I emailed them immediately. A short while later we got together at my place at Culburra Beach and bashed out 21 songs. We wrote down the chords on sheets of A4 paper and recorded a version of each tune on an iPhone. We put a PDF of the chord sheets and the recordings up on DropBox so we could study at our leisure. A month later we flew to Hobart and recorded all the songs in two days. 8 tracks straight to tape. Then we did what we normally do; we took our songs back to our respective home studios and recorded our vocals and other overdubs. I mixed it in my granny flat and sent it off to be mastered. Then I went back to work.”

Dedicated with the utmost affection and care to our most dearest Sarah Longhurst.

THE FAUVES - new album - Tropical Strength - out NOV 1 on Valve via MGM with first single - un-Australians - detached NOW!!!

Have you ever failed the Pub Test? Have you ever had unpatriotic thoughts? Do you laugh every Invasion Day when people tip pink paint over the heads of Captain Cook statues? Wait a sec, do you call it Invasion Day? That’s un-Australian. Do you know and/or like a vegan? Did you sleep through last year’s dawn service? Do you find yourself tempted to answer rhetorical questions? You are un-Australian. You are not alone; so many Australians are un-Australian. Un-Australian Australians. Paradoxes and oxymorons. Wait a sec, did you just use two words derived from Ancient Greek in one sentence?

Out now, un-Australians, the first song off The Fauves 13th album Tropical Strength. Ask for it by name. Or by any other name. The result is bound to be the same.

Like an explosive can of banned substances THE FAUVES return with an absolute cracker of an album - TROPICAL STRENGTH. Once the regulators are done with figuring out what secret ingredients went into the chemistry of this uncontrolled chimera it will no doubt be pranked as one of the finest they have released. Recorded in the luxurious off shore havens of Bali, just like any aged timebomb has set off a musical work of time honoured art. It reeks of mature confidence and innate song writing quality lyrically coasting their twisted satirical bent of humour with a devout cleverness and fresh sense of the modern now. Take it from me… if you can given the penchant for spilling my guts in an interrogation room over a concerted bout of coercion - this is the one alright! Who do I pay to get this out of here?

THE FAUVES

Elections leave me pondering the conflicted state of politics... and yeah I can't help but think about the degrading nature of all as we negotiate notions of collapse. The self pushes even harder when it thinks it will be denied the desert menu.

This QLD state election leaves me at odds as to group perception and understanding, and enhancing possibilities of cooperation - how easily they are manipulated by the simplest of exaggerated platitudes. I know my words change little but the world is in dire need of orators who can reveal and inspire selflessness - who draw the marginalised into a positive awareness and inclusive narrative!

Election

“Voters were asked if they supported a series of economic reforms. A majority supported price caps (70%); increasing taxes paid by large corporations (70%); reducing income taxes (65%); funding more social services (61%); running budget surpluses to reduce inflation (60%); and raising the level of income support for the unemployed (53%).”

Very little of these concerns will be entertained by any right wing orientated government other than hollow platitudes of weasel sloganeering.

The rightwing minded are the embodiment of sociopathic hyper individualism. They care little beyond their self interest addled with the disease of greed. Enough is never enough. They will offer a pretence of support but policy is only about the indenture of slavery exploiting the masses for the gains of the few like some trickle of a fantasy. There is no common good just a conman’s gold. It runs hot in their blood as welfare’s abandoned for the gush of money littered corruptly, selfish destroyers of community, habitat and environment. Nature is just a gutter to colonise with cashflow!

The rightwing playbook is always about an excess of individual rights weighted in a vein of greed… and overselling the perpetual crises of fear and xenophobia. Sow division , lie and lie, dwell in the troll’s pronouncement of constant negativity never touching the sphere of positivity in productive action for all - just mobster mentality driving chaos as smoke to cloak their mirrors of narcissus. They are coming for you… your way of life and your money! Be afraid!

Cost of living crisis… is there predominantly due to the rolling effect of neoliberal economic policy and fostering of persistent growth at the expense of equality and distributed wealth. A society and economy obsessed with growth is illogical and ultimately self-destructive generating extremes of wealth for the minority and hand to mouth existence for the many. It drives an unsustainability as hoarders burn alive.

The crisis of crime is a blow up demonising youth and race… there is more white collar crime which comes directly from that place of selfish entitlement and the quest for more. Although as disenfranchisement increasingly grows off the back of the spite of policy that leaves so many impoverished then crime becomes the avenue of survival. Waging wars of punishment particularly on youth only embeds deeper cycles of societal disintegration - punitive policies only deepen divides and generational cycles of abuse and intoxication! Rightwing policies tend to perpetuate the conditions for increased crime and cyclical entrapment relative to their orientation of depriving people of possibility, support and rehabilitation - it is about negation and locking up which in turn comes with a heavy societal and financial cost. The myopia and blame and irresponsibility is blatantly obvious yet the cane of control strikes more than the compassion of care - optimise function, fund optimism, reduce recidivism!

The rightwing push the health crisis towards the American user pays scenario because hey it benefits the perverse capitalist arena in medicine towards that of private corporate gain - something that seems antithetical to Hippocrates oath. They flagrantly ignore the fertility rights of women seen only as vessels of population. They fear the fluidity of gender and sexuality because they can’t surpass the basic dichotomy of binary notions. They limit mental health support because the system they propagate exacerbates the alienation and overall deterioration of societal psychological wellbeing. Health overall is just control and another pathway to financial gain.

The housing crisis falls clearly at the feet of the right wing with its consumerist agenda of housing first and foremost as investment and less a human right… a human need. The aspiration of wedding cake mansions… the overlord of rentiers opportunism in the face of the struggle to occupy and reside… the land banking and clearing… the complete disregard of social housing provisions and just ethical decency in relation to solutions of equity… the dismissal of the homeless as something to be moved on… the fracturing of community pitting people against each other in the pursuit of somewhere to live… the negative gearing and pathways of rebates for the multiple house owners to increase their wealth and isolate those just looking at steps to live and provide security for a family home… the ever cyclic concentration of inherent wealth. The right wing orientated financial policy propagates homelessness in its inequality, and then demonises the homeless as it's answer.

The pitching of scaffolded lies to seed doubt, fracture community into vast chasms’s of division, shift blame, avoid responsibility, maintain denial and forge false realities in securing your vote… once taken easily forgotten until the next campaign where the carrots of cash and coercion are dangled yet again.

They continue the coloniser agenda - colonising nature, environment, community, mind, culture, internet - all and every terrain is just there for the exploitation in terms of financial gain and ideological manipulation.

When it comes to the scale of problem humanity has in front of them these politicians of right slam their fist of ideas… with no imaginations. Their minds swirl around the same ole drain… money. The less taxes they pay the better for their personal gain. The less the public expenditure the less tax is needed. They are not about the greater wealth of a social good and trying to find better scales of equality. They are only about the entitled wealth of a privileged minority.

What will it take for the masses to realise how detrimental their economic and financial policy is for their long term well-being? They are coerced otherwise by the simplest slogans of fear mongering… division… keeping them separated… right wing policy only generates greater segregation… fragmentation… disenfranchisement… their policies weighted towards the egocentric concerns of that much prized wealthy minority… the welfare of the greater masses affords little concern other than being part of the ruse that they have everyone’s back. They hold on to the archaic policies of the coloniser… people, land, society, culture are open ground for colonisation, larders for exploitation… nature just a resource for financial gain, dominion for control and extraction. For what purpose other than their supremely valued excess of wealth and lifestyle. So much emptiness as humanity contaminates our grand life support Earth to a shell ultimately shedding the detritus of material accoutrements off like a dog discarding fleas. For all the supposed intelligence there is so little advanced cohabitation - we are damned with all that sparkles!
