Had a great time at .brisbane North Lakes today. 7 of us were there with multiple games played.

- Hatchin’ & A Pocketful of Heroes by Julie of Mi55abby’s Games
- Untitled Town Game by Brenton
- Octogenarian Kleptomaniacs, Darn Socks!, and Avant Garden by me (Eris) of Delta Phase Games.

Thanks to everyone who came along and thanks to North Lakes Library for letting us run the event!

Preparing for .brisbane today and I’ve remade the prototype for Octogenarian Kleptomaniacs, a game me and some others developed in 2015 for a game jam.

The others have given me their blessing to continue work on it and see if I can turn it into a publishable game :-)

It’s way past bed-time at the Shady Bristlecones nursing home (about 9 pm), but the thought of tea cups is keeping you awake.

The cantankerous caretaker has a collection of exquisite tea cups stored in 3 tea rooms in the main building, and you have decided it is time to relieve the caretaker of some of those dainty delights.

Unfortunately you are not the only light-fingered resident to have this idea. The caretaker would also not stand for this tomfoolery, and will be stalking the halls to prevent anyone trying to steal his precious porcelain!

Had a great meeting with who is helping me with Sugarrr! Josh has done the illustrations and he going the extra mile to help me write the rules and get everything sorted out so we can get this game to the printers.

Goal is to launch the game in late January, but with the holiday season it’s a little uncertain right now.

Anyway, huge thanks to Josh, as well as special thanks to .finch2 & Joel who have also been helping me get meself sorted out and this game on track. Also thanks to everyone who has played the game and given me feedback, it all helps make it better and is hugely appreciated! 🥰

Tried a 4 player version of Avant Garden last night. It left me a little deflated. For context, the game has been 2p only for a long time. And it works quite well there. But obviously if I could expand it to more players that means more people can enjoy it. I’m on the fence right now about if it’s better to focus on the 2p only version or make some radical changes to accommodate more players. I think I’m leaning towards staying focused on 2p only.

Yesterday I got to spend the day at the November Brisbane game day. Massive thank to the crew and volunteers for putting these game days on each time, they are well run and a great asset to the community.

I played a few games and ran some tests of my own games.

They were:
• Hot Pot, an upcoming release by .games I suggest you keep your eyes out for!
• Blood, a prototype by .bendixen which takes the simultaneous action selection mechanic and does some cool stuff with it
• Sugarrr!, a game by me which I am aiming to release in January 2025
• Avant Garden, a game by me I’m working on and hoping to release in late 2025 or early 2026
• Las Vegas Royale, an older dice game that was lots of fun and probably my fave game of the day
• Curses & Covens, by & - a one-vs-many game which did a fantastic review of that can explain the game way better than me - so go check it out on .up.and.sit.down
• DroPolter, from , a dexterity push your luck game. I was terrible at it but lots of laughs

Massive thanks to everyone who played games with me or stopped for a chat - the community is what I love most about this hobby / industry and meeting so many lovely people is easily the best part.

I’m running late, but I am finally on my way to the Brisbane game day! See you soon those who are there!

It’s been a bit of a tough week for me health wise so not a lot has gotten done on my own games.

Which meant the ability to play a couple of games with friends today was much appreciated.

We played Spots and Takenoko.

I think Spots might be my fave light push your luck dice game right now. It’s easy to teach, easy to play, but still has a good amount of choice. It’s also a good game to play while having a catch up and chat haha

Takenoko is a classic, solid game experience. Again, easy to teach and play but with enough decisions to be enjoyable. I also love how you may inadvertently help (or be helped by!) other players while trying to complete your own goals. A really good game.

Really happy to share that I will be at the Brisbane event on November 16!

I’ll be demoing and testing Sugarrr! And I’ll also have a few other prototypes with me too.

Some info:

Sugarrr! is a light family card game for 2-4 players where players are vying to collect dinosaurs and fruit, scoring points at the end of the game for every fruit the dinosaurs eat. The game has a unique but simple core mechanism where the last card played each turn determines if a player collects dinosaurs or fruit. As scoring is only possible by having both a dinosaur and the fruit it wants, each turn sees the player needing to choose what to go for, which is not always a straightforward decision! Hand management is crucial to playing big turns and getting big returns!

Number of players: 2-4
Game length: 30-45 minutes
Ages: 10+
Design: Eris Alar
Artist: Josh Huf
Publisher: Delta Phase Games

Tonight at Friday Night Games I played:
• original Carcassonne (but with the river and abbot but we did not score fields)
• Sugarrr! A prototype of a game about dinosaurs eating fruit by me which I’m aiming to release in January 2025
• A Game For Good Christians which is an Apples to Apples / CAH clone with a sort of biblical theme (but honestly was pretty poorly written. It did make me think that this genre could shine with the right writers though).

Had a good time and am glad I made the effort to get out to it :-)

I got to play Everdell Farshore last night for the first time - quite enjoyed it and feel it may be the ‘better’ Everdell game for me.

It was also my first time at the new Wednesday evening group in North Lakes and it was lovely to see some people I’ve not seen for a few months and I’m aiming to go along more frequently again!

Another great night at R&D at - it’s a monthly playtesting event for local board game designers.

We had about 13 people! It’s great to be a part of a vibrant design community!

If you are interested in coming along send me a DM and I’ll pass on the details for the Incubator Brisbane group where playtesting events are shared.

One of the absolute best things about being a game designer who tests and demos publicly is meeting awesome people. I’ve made so many friends across Australia because of this.

Well, at last weekend I got to meet Erynn and aside from being a lovely human, she gave me and Henry special friendship bracelets!

I’ve been wearing mine almost every day since.

It’s a reminder to me that human connection is why I make games. Also reminds me that while I may sometimes feel like what I do is frivolous and unimportant, there are people who appreciate me and my work.

So thank you again Erynn, your gift has meant a lot to me.

My only game purchase! I had to be lean this year due to both bag size and budget and ended up even leaner than I expected! But I am thrilled to buy this as it’s a game by Cheryl Howard who I got to know through Incubator Melbourne over many years and it’s her first release. I’m so proud of her and happy to call her a friend!

I played an early version of this game at CanCon 2023 and am looking forward to seeing how it developed!
