This project is based on the true story of a war veteran in Australia who was suffering from PTSD and was about to end his life. However, the most unlikely of scenarios took place; giving his life new purpose and meaning. In the movie, however, the main lead is played by a woman.
Who am I? My name is Kaizan Irani and I am an Australian Writer/Director based in Brisbane. I base most of my movies on social realism and blend it with drama. My first movie "the Bookshelf" has received awards and accolades world wide. The movie received 5 awards, 6 official selections and 1 honourable mention at various film festivals around the world.
This campaign is about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in war veterans. Through my research I have found out that there are around 30,177 su***des among U.S. service members and veterans of post 9/11 war (Watson Institute - International and Public Affairs) and from 2001 to 2017 there were 419 certified su***de deaths among serving and ex-serving Australian Defence Force Personnel (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare).
Through your contribution we can bring this TRUE STORY to life and help save the lives of others who are suffering from PTSD after serving their respective country in war.
Director's Statement
PTSD has been a silent killer for too long now. In the Australian Defence Forces (ADF) and defence forces all around the world PTSD has claimed many lives.
Why does this topic interest me? The drive behind all of this started when my wife returned one day from what was supposed to be a simple task of buying some second hand goods from a random person. She returned hours later and visibly affected by something. She relayed with me all of the stories this man had shared of all his battles with PTSD; how it destroyed his family, marriage, friendships, etc. She had never before encountered a young man in his mid 30s looking so fragile and distraught. Of all stories shared, none were so shocking as his attempt to take his life. But such shock was beautifully tempered with hearing of what saved his life last minute. It was such an inspiring story that it niggled away at me in the back-ground until I did something about it.
As luck had it, the actor from my first movie "The Bookshelf" has also suffered in the past from PTSD. Teaming up with her and bringing my wife's true story to life then turned into a passion.
I want to make this movie to bring more awareness to this issue of PTSD within the defence forces. This movie also carries with it the strong message that a personβs life can change just by the simplest of encounters rather than needing some kind of dramatic catharsis.
