I'd seen the news, read the articles, and had nothing more than a public opinion on the Shayna Jack case. Then one day, Shayna and I sat down at a coffee shop, and within 10 minutes, I believed without a doubt that she was innocent and that this incredible athlete was trapped in a situation that defied belief. Unprotected from the media, she was vilified and suffered social abuse few could imagine or tolerate. Her story was one of a broken system that had abandoned its athlete, thrust her into a world of isolation, and deprived her of the only thing that mattered: swimming and training to compete and represent her country.
Since that day, I have seen this phenomenal, human, young woman and exceptional athlete conquer every challenge presented. Yes, there's been incredibly hard times and moments of cruelty that have been unfathomable to watch someone bear. However, I have never doubted her resilience, character or drive to succeed.
Watching her show the world who she is this past week, I hope, has inspired others as much as she has inspired me. There is no challenge that resolute self-belief and drive can't overcome.
Shayna is well and truly back as the Australian champion of the 50m, back in the Australian Swim Team, and off to the World Trials and the Commonwealth Games.
Few will fully appreciate all she has endured physically and mentally to achieve this past week's success. She is a true inspiration, and I can't wait to see what else the future holds. I believe she's only getting started. Team Jack is always for me, and I'm so grateful I get that privilege.
