In this country, where at least one woman is killed each week by an intimate partner, what is the responsibility of media outlets when publishing content that serves to promote and incite violence against women? There is no effective framework of accountability for outlets which affirm racism and emphasise misogyny in the pursuit of a click. While the target might be Meghan Markle, the victims of this messaging extend far beyond her.

The ability to seek mental health treatment should not depend on your income. The current cost to see a psychologist is already extreme, even with rebate. 43.7% of Australians aged 16-85yrs will experience a mental disorder at some point. Mental health treatment should be a fundamental part of our health system. This decision is abhorrent.

Most women are all too familiar with these kinds of conversations. We’re told who not to be left alone with at the party, or which guy is the ‘sex pest’ in the group. Each time we engage with these ideas, we’re protecting each other, but we’re also taking on the burden of maintaining our own safety, of avoiding our own assaults. This happens every single day, without calling out the behaviour, without challenging it and without removing that person from the group or situation. When it’s happening within a workforce of people tasked with enforcing law, with responding to the communities calls and with supporting victim-survivors, what does that say about the cultural norms in this country? How does that reflect on what our community accepts as the standard of behaviour? We’re fu**ed, quite frankly.

We do all have the same amount of time in a day, but we all have different priorities. For example, person A has full-time childcare, a cleaner, and no work on Saturday. Their priorities are going to an exercise class, having brunch with a friend, then going shopping. Person B works two jobs on a Saturday, gets home in time for their partner to leave for work, puts the kids to bed, then, too tired to clean up the mess left from the day, goes straight to bed.
