Safety Alerts from the Government of South Australia

The Government of South Australia has issued two important safety alerts to highlight recent incidents and prevent future occurrences.

Truck Tipper Tray Rollover Risks: A quad trailer recently tipped over while unloading its second load. The driver noticed the trailer was uneven and attempted to lower it, but it tipped over. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. This incident emphasizes the need for ensuring even ground and careful handling during unloading to prevent rollovers.

Articulated Roller Rollover Risks: Operating articulated rollers on uneven terrain, near embankments, excavations, or water courses poses significant rollover dangers. Recent reports indicate that even small embankments can cause these machines to tip, endangering operators. It is crucial to assess ground conditions and exercise caution to mitigate these risks.

Across Australia 130,000 tonnes of OTR reach their end of life each year, with only 10 per cent being recovered and the rest mostly buried, stockpiled or sent to landfill (Tyre Stewardship Australia, 2023). This is below the Federal Government’s 2030 target of 80 per cent recovery rate for all waste streams.

The management, recovery, and reuse of Off-the-Road (OTR) tyres has become an important topic. As the Australian Flexible Pavement Association writes, more work needs – and is – being done to counter the carbon impacts of this material.

Yesterday, the Australian Flexible Pavement Association ( ) proudly hosted the 2024 Safety Forum. The Forum gathered industry leaders to address crucial concerns within the flexible pavement maintenance, road construction and broader construction sector. Recognising the pressing need for cross-industry collaboration, the Forum aimed to foster an exchange of insights and ideas among stakeholders. Key issues, such as the separation of worksites, workers, and public traffic, as well as people and plant, were central to discussions. Such priority areas align closely with AfPA’s National Health and Safety Committee Safety Priorities Strategy and Actions.
