In June I travelled to Denmark, WA, to perform a suite of poetry set to music with Jen Lush, Chris Parkinson and Mark Seddon, with each poet reading their poetry before each songs was performed. It was an incredibly rewarding project to work on.
Here's a short documentary about the process of setting poetry to music.

Watched the Netflix documentary 'Count Me In' last night. As a drummer, I was ready to be entertained, but perhaps not educated, by it.

I also made sure to remind myself that a mainstream look at something I love won't necessarily be the definitive, comprehensive document I would like to see.

I was at least hoping that it would be useful for drum students as a sort of one-stop validation of their instrument and its place in popular music.

Overall I found the documentary meandering, lacking a theme, and at times presumptuous. Thre was no paticular mission statement apparent. Was it a history? An examination of the drummer's role in a band? An appreciation of the simultaneously primeval and yet creative nature of drumming? Not really.

The lack of a narrator was a big omission. It meant that the narrative relied on each interviewee hopefuly mentioning things which could then be cut together, but this method proves confusing. Such as when Stewart Copeland is talking about Ringo Starr, while other interviewees are talking about Copeland without mentioning him by name.

Other sections of the show just lost their way. For example, why the focus on Keith Moon's self-destructive (and everything else-destructive) lifestyle? Does the crazy, loose cannon, rock 'n' roll drummer cliché need to be dragged out again? That's not a highlight of drumming that I'd choose to show my young drum students. They don't know who Animal from the Muppets is and the stereotype wouldn't make much sense to them.

And what was the point of the Drum Doctor visit when, ultimately, the DW drums picked out for the (under-cooked, apart from Cindy Blackman's playing) drum-battle at the end were chosen because of the gold sparkle wrap?!

Disappointing, because there are so many cohesive ways the show could have been tied together. Early on, it seemed as though the history of the drumset was going to be a narrative device, or the way drummers historically used the components of the drumset, or drum solos as a point of difference between genres. But it lost its focus as soon as Chad Smith mentioned socks, helped along by Rat Scabies doing the outdated prog-rock bashing line. (A lot of technical skill-eschewing punk bands would develop into adept and capable musicians. Not Rat Scabies, apparently.)

Narrative dead ends: What happened to Keith Moon and John Bonham? What is the relationship between drums and bass in a band? How much of the early jazz style and of rudimentary technique is still relevant in modern drumming? We were shown the LinnDrum machine, but then what happened to drum programming, looping and sampling after the eighties?

Interesting things not included: What are some of the most iconic drum sounds, beats, and fills that occasionally bring the drums to the fore in popular music? Why weren't Neil Peart, Phil Collins, Terry Bozzio, Hal Blaine, Sheila E, Steve Gadd, Clyde Stubblefield, Jeff Porcaro or Dave Weckl mentioned? How much modern pop actually uses drum sounds from past decades via sampling?
