๐Ÿ…WHAT KIND OF TOMATO IS YOUR FAVOURITE?๐Ÿ…

This morning our breakfast crew hosted their broadcast live from the annual Bega Valley Seedsavers Tastiest Tomato competition at Bega's Littleton Gardens.

Our presenter Eddie Williams was joined by the group's Liz Worth and Julie Davies, as well as South East Producer's Association president Paul McMurray, rumball tomato grower Bruce Walsh, potato farmer Terry Williams and our own Rural reporter Josh Becker.

The winner was the pink bumble bee, which is known for its vibrant flavour and orange and red stripes.

๐Ÿ“š NEW JINDABYNE PUBLIC AND HIGH SCHOOL OPENS ๐Ÿ“š

The new Jindabyne Public School and Jindabyne High School officially opened to students today.

Both schools form part of the Education Campus on Barry Way, and have a combined capacity for more than 900 students.

The new schools cost $160-million to complete, and replace the former Jindabyne Central School on Park Road.

The campus adjoins the TAFE Connected Learning Centre, and will feature a new public pre-school set to open by 2027.

$47 million was also announced in December 2024 by the NSW Government to improve road access on Barry Way, including building a new intersection, roundabout and landscaping.

Do you know how to swim?

Royal Life Saving Australia (RLSA) chief executive Justin Scarr is concerned that swimming rates in this country are at "historic lows".

"As a nation, I fear we've lost our herd immunity to drowning, as conservative estimates show that more than 50 per cent of the population can't swim," he said in a statement.

๐Ÿ‘ STUDENT VETS EMBRACE RURAL PRACTICE ๐Ÿ‘

While the vet shortage is biting across regional NSW, two young vet students want to be part of the solution.

Jessy Arnold and Amy Rosenthal from James Cook University had their first practical experience working with sheep at Greendale Merinos near last week.

โ€œWeโ€™ve done a bunch of drenching, weaning lambs with pellets, then into the shearing sheds as well, giving that a go as well,โ€ Ms Rosenthal said.

Ms Rosenthal said the hands-on practical experience in rural areas will help shape her career in the industry.

โ€œIโ€™m keeping an open mind for now, but Iโ€™m interested in equine and bovine reproduction, so that's what I'm basing my placements around, but just largies and probably mixed practice."

For Jessy Arnold, the experience working with merinos has helped put some of the course theory into practice and reaffirmed her goals.

โ€œIโ€™m in the same boat. I love the largies. Iโ€™m a small animal vet nurse in my job. Iโ€™d love to start in a mixed practice to get my bearings," she said.

โ€œI've done quite a bit of work with bovine reproduction and all the EBV values and that sort of stuff and with merinoโ€™s itโ€™s similar so that something Iโ€™d like to find out more about.โ€
