UB40 released Signing Off in the UK on 29 August 1980 by Dudley-based independent label Graduate Records. It was an immediate success in their home country, reaching number 2 on the UK albums chart, and made UB40 one of the many popular reggae bands in Britain, several years before the band found international fame. The politically-concerned lyrics struck a chord in a country with widespread public divisions over high unemployment, the policies of the recently elected Conservative party under Margaret Thatcher, and the rise of the racist National Front party, while the record's dub-influenced rhythms reflected the late 1970s influence in British pop music of West Indian music introduced by immigrants from the Caribbean after the Second World War, particularly reggae and ska – this was typified by the 2 Tone movement, at that point at the height of its success and led by fellow West Midlands act The Specials, with whom UB40 drew comparisons due to their multiracial band line-up and socialist views.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Pauline Black
In a music career spanning over 40 years, Black came to prominence in the late 1970s as the lead singer of the 2 Tone ska revival band the Selecter, which released four singles that entered the Top 40 charts in the United Kingdom during the 1970s and the 1980s, including "On My Radio", "Three Minute Hero", "Missing Words" and "The Whisper". Rolling Stone said of Black "Hands down, Pauline Black possessed the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release. Blessed with a bewitching soprano and dramatic panache, Black's voice reached plateaus that made every other musical detail sound like part of a backdrop painted just to set the stage for her entrance." Black has also been an actress, with roles in films and television.

The Aggrolites are an amalgamation of two previous Los Angeles reggae and ska bands, the Vessels and the Rhythm Doctors. They formed in 2002 as a live backing band for reggae icon Derrick Morgan, and were asked to record music for a new Morgan album. The project was never released, but the recording sessions inspired the Aggrolites to become a permanent band. They have served as the backing band for Phyllis Dillon, Scotty, Joseph Hill of Culture, Prince Buster, and Tim Armstrong.

One of the most significant collections in Trojan's immense catalogue, The Trojan Story album dramatically changed the perception of Jamaican music among the general British public outside of the country's Afro-Caribbean population. Prior to its release in 1971 there had never been an attempt to present a comprehensive anthology of the island's musical development, with vintage ska, rock steady and reggae widely regarded as obsolete and of precious little merit. The treble disc set, which became an instant best-seller, had been the brainchild of Trojan's label manager and Black Music fan, Rob Bell, who, assisted by Trojan stalwarts, Dandy, Webster Shrewder and Joe Sinclair, produced arguably the most significant Jamaican music retrospectives of all time.

The "5" Royales was an American rhythm and blues (R&B) vocal group from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States, that combined gospel, jump blues and doo-wop, marking an early and influential step in the evolution of rock and roll. Most of their big R&B hits were recorded in 1952 and 1953 and written by the guitarist Lowman "Pete" Pauling.Cover versions of the band's songs hit the Top 40, including "Dedicated to the One I Love" (the Shirelles and the Mamas & the Papas), "Tell the Truth" (Ray Charles and Ike & Tina Turner), and "Think" (James Brown & The Famous Flames). Brown modeled his first vocal group after the "5" Royales, and both Eric Clapton and Stax guitarist Steve Cropper cited Pauling as a key influence. The Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger covered "Think" on his 1993 solo album Wandering Spirit. The "5" Royales were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Jamie and the Numbers are a Wellington-based band who have been around for a while now, as a band they are prolific writers of their own original material and in the context of playing northern soul tunes and other tunes in that musical genre they like to be known as The Numbers.

They are usually a 4 piece and consist of three brothers from Wainuiamata and a newly adopted Kiwi originally from Birmingham England. These guys are brimming with cool retro tunes and some barnstorming original songs played with verve and passion and their shows are always fun. In 2019 they supported “From The Jam” on their visit to New Zealand and after teaming up with Jamie have played Pasifika Festivals and open-air concerts to thousands of people.

The Numbers collectively have played/sessioned/recorded for other artists on such labels as Gut Records, D-Star, EG Records, Imaginary Records and have in excess of 40+ published songs with Universal, Complete Music, KWS Records NYC and Cherry Red, with this new direction of releasing Northern Soul songs alongside some of their more soulful originals on 7″ vinyl their goal is to go on and produce some top quality soul album.

Exciting news! The upcoming new 2 tone era drama from Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Kinight looks set for an early 2024 release on BBC One! Speaking on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme in August, Knight discussed his major new 6 part project “This Town”, which was filmed in Birmingham & the West Midlands earlier this year.
This Town is a Birmingham based 80’s family saga, set against the backdrop of the 2 Tone scene. To give a flavour of what to expect in This Town, Knight was introduced with a series of 80’s songs including “Ghost Town” by The Specials, “On My Radio” by The Selecter & “Mirror In The Bathroom” by The Beat. He told the programme that he hoped for the release of This Town to be in the early part of next year.
