F Troop Marnoo Reserves Football team 1971 to 1973.
In 1970, after consideration of the Marnoo Club’s position within the declining South Wimmera Football League, a decision was made by MFC President Ray Cheyne and supporters to apply to play football with the Lexton Football League. This thriving League existed to the east of Marnoo, with 8 teams including Avoca, Navarre, Lexton Moonambell, Landsborough Amphitheatre and Natte Bealiba, with Waubra at 124 kms away being the most distant to travel.
It was a new and exciting journey for the Marnoo Tigers however as Lexton already held the tiger colours, Marnoo changed to Carlton and became the “New Blues”.
Each club had 3 football teams and 4 netball teams. There was no trouble for Marnoo reaching out to the community “Bluebells” as the new netball teams emerged, but a Reserves football team was a difficult matter. Eventually, several old timers nearing 40 years of age agreed to mentor a few teenagers, and the motley crew soon became known far and wide as “F troop”.
The problem for the aspiring selection committee was that “F troop” became too popular and everyone wanted a to be a part of the story, from bank tellers to railway men, from school kids to farmers with wobbly knees.
By 1972, F troop was a well-oiled unit on the field and played in the Reserves grand final losing out to Navarre. That year one of their heroes namely Graeme Mclennan won the Lexton League Best and fairest. This was a great achievement for a little fella but no surprise for those who saw him toughing it out in the South Wimmera and participating in Marnoo senior’s premiership years of 1966 and 1967.
Such was the F troop following in the district they breezed through 1973 and 1974 winning consecutive premierships and those who were part of the F troop legend are still proud of what they brought home to Marnoo 50 plus years later.
To this end, a F troop Reunion is scheduled at the Marnoo Hub on Saturday 20/5/23 for a midday lunch. None of the 50 or so participants located so far has declined an invitation to attend and none of the group have forgotten Marnoo’s roaring days of community spirit in the 1970’s.
On Sunday we celebrate Mother's Day.
This week The Pyrenees Advocate visited Avoca, Beaufort and Waubra Pre Schools and asked some of the children what they love about their mum.

PYRENEES commuters travelling by train to Melbourne will experience a massive cost saving from this weekend, with fares on the V/Line network being slashed by 85%
The Victorian Government is honouring an election promise to bring regional transport fares in line with what Melbourne commuters pay.
The Labor Government is capping the cost of a daily ticket on the entire regional Victorian network at the same price as a metro daily fare, ensuring families living in rural and regional Victoria can visit family and friends and access vital health and education services in other regional cities and in Melbourne.
Current metro fares mean regional trips will initially be capped at $9.20 for a full fare or $4.60 for a concession – and at $6.70 and $3.35 for concession on a weekend or public holidays.
Previously, an adult return fare from Beaufort was $48.00 or $24.00 for concession card holders.
The new fares represent an 81% saving for Beaufort and district residents travelling by train to Melbourne.
Ripon MP Martha Haylett said the cheaper fares will make it easier for country people to get around.
“The fare cap will encourage more Victorians to connect with family and friends by reducing the cost of travel between regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne.”

The Wimmera River at Crowlands. Some readers would remember this is a new bridge built after the 2011 floods which saw the old bridge wash away.
Plenty of action in Avoca this afternoon A vehicle travelling through Avoca stopped due to a gas leak, Avoca Fire Brigade attended and called the Sebastopol LPG Unit. After arriving they hooked up a hose to the tank and transferred the gas to a burner to burn all the gas without causing any damage Great job by all involved Sorry not the Olympic Torch for any one driving past
