Capers are early this year, the first kilos of capers out of the pickle and drying. The chefs will be happy as we appear to have a decent crop starting this year.

Meet Other Great Australians 🧐🇦🇺🏆

This week, we travel due west from Mildura, where we were last week, to Berri South Australia (in the Riverland region) on the east side of the Murray River close to the Victorian border.

Superstar chefs from all over the globe have all approached Kolophon Capers to buy their award-winning capers.

From a barren, even hostile, patch of dirt in remote Mallee country in South Australia’s Riverland, between Berri and Barmera near the Victorian border, the owners Barry Porter and Helen Jones don’t just grow capers, they have mastered the art of producing world-class products.

Barry and Helen started farming capers in 2006 with 50 plants on a small patch of their four-hectare property. They now grow 250 plants that produce seven products, including buds, berries, leaves and powder. Annual yield includes 150kg of buds and about 100kg of berries.

If you enjoy capers by all accounts, these are the best organically grown capers & caper products you can buy. Plus, they sell out yearly, so you'd be blessed to get your hands on some.

To try your luck, head to their website.

Our Kolophon Capers received a Bronze medal at Sydney Fine Food Show this year to go with the Gold medal last year. Sue Heward of Singing Magpie won 2 Silver and a Bronze this year. EDIT: Ive just tallied up over the years and that makes 14 medals, Gold, Silver and Bronze we have won with our Capers, Caper Leaves and Caper Berries

Climate change, just finished pruning the capers today and noticed a couple of plants are already shooting, and that's at least a month early. It looks like the frost prevention will get a work out this season. Any other growers having similiar growth happening?

I love it when prospective customers give us feedback like this chef from Sydney.
"Hey Barry, The capers are amazing. I love the variance in flavour between the sizes too. Didn’t expect it to be so noticeable in flavour, texture and finish." Aaron.

About 1600 germinated caper seeds into 50mm pots and about 500 small plants into 70mm pots ready for planting out this spring, some are big enough now. The poly house is getting full. I have finally some confidence in seed germination, now about 80% and when I started it was about 1%. Nothing like a challenge.

The caper seedlings finally germinated in the last couple of weeks and are now growing well, looks as though I got about 70% which is pretty good for the literature talks 10% if you are lucky. Hand pollinated heavy bearers and also a few larger brighter flower garden plants, Tube stock will be ready for planting in April. And plenty of Lady Birds in the caper patch. Great little workers eating up most of the nasty nibblers
