🌱🌿🌳Visit the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens for a guided walk on Sunday December 29 🌱🌿🌳

Explore the gardens and see how the volunteer-run gardens have changed since the 1990s, then enjoy a morning tea afterwards.

2. Thursday 26 December
3. Wednesday 1 January

Between Christmas and the new year, expect some delays at the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre due to the high volume of waste generated during the festive season and high customer numbers.

Christmas can be a wonderful time of year, but it can be a wasteful one, too!
Here’s some handy tips to help reduce your festive footprint:

🍞🍏🍔Forget food waste
1. Encourage guests to bring containers to take leftovers home, find tips from Love Food Hate Waste to use up leftovers and freeze what you can’t finish.
2. Toss all food scraps from cooking and all uneaten food (including seafood and bones) in your organics bin, it will be collected during Christmas week.

♻️♻️♻️Recycle Right
1. Use your recycling bin for hard plastic bottles and containers, steel and aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, cardboard and clean paper (including wrapping paper)
2. Keep a milk crate or box outside for guests to pop their empty drink containers in.

❌🚫❌Don’t dump on charities
1. Charities are often overwhelmed with low quality donations over the festive season. Please check what your chosen charity accepts and only donate during donating hours.

This Saturday will be a very special Christmas edition of Wharf River Club with The Feramones. This event will once again be on the Wharf at Fawcett Park so bring your picnic blankets and grab some takeaway - the restaurant is booked out but there is plenty of room at the Park. They will be asking for gold coin donation for the Charity of the Day - Marine Rescue Ballina!

Santa will be arriving at 2pm by the boats and the music starts at 3pm!

They are wrapping up rehearsals this week for the year, but they're always looking for new members to join.

So if you can play an instrument and are looking for something new to try in 2025, maybe give the Ballina Shire Concert Band a go.

Looking for a Christmas activity for the kids?

Get into the festive spirit at Ballina Library this week. Come down and make a Christmas themed hat, then take on our Christmas Scavenger Hunt and find the hidden presents.
These activities are suitable for 5-13 year olds and will be available during library opening hours, until Saturday 21 December. All materials will be provided.
Please note, children under 10 will need to be under competent adult supervision.

(REMINDER: Ballina Library will be closed from noon on Saturday 21st December and reopen 9.00am Thursday 2nd January 2025.)

You've still got 4 days to fill out Ballina Shire Council's online survey: Understanding the impacts of overland flooding and storm water in Ballina Shire.

The SWMP and flood studies aim to:
• understand the current capacity of the stormwater network
• model and map overland flooding over a range of storm events, including the March 2022 storm
• identify areas where flooding occurs during high rainfall events due to factors such as stormwater capacity limitations
• identify potential stormwater upgrade projects that could improve this flooding.
