BOOK REVIEW:Australian Malayali Children’s Author Sandhya Parappukkaran’s Sandhya Parappukkaran new book ‘Stay for Dinner’ is a delightful story linking diverse cultures to different ways of eating food.Beautiful illustrations are done by Michelle Pereira @youngpapadumThe main character of the story, Reshma who is an immigrant Malayali girl, takes readers through her insecure feelings about her cultural identity. When she is having dinner at her friends houses, she notices everyone eats different food in different ways; some uses forks&spoons, some uses chopsticks whereas Reshma’s family uses their hands to eat food at home.“ what would my friends think if they saw us eat?” is a very relatable question even for grown-ups!The real tension begins when Reshma’s friends come over to her house for dinner and her family decides to give a Sadya on banana leaf ! At this stage, Adriel and I was very eager to know what’s going to happen at the end, and we were discussing between each other - will they offer spoons to her friends to eat Sadya or will the friends choose to eat with hands ? We could relate to the character and her feelings, the embarrassment you might face when your friends don’t feel comfortable eating with hands and even more,if your Ammachi “burps” louder after meals !But this beautiful story reassured us that ‘it’s okay to different, it’s okay to eat with hands and it’s wonderful to be a Malayali no matter where you are’!Thank you Sandhya for writing this beautiful story so authentically and making children culturally confident and be proud of who they are !
