Villawood Properties are not the Villawood Detention Centre.

Quite a few readers have commented on the large “Villawood” sign that has popped up in How Rd, Aldinga, and some have wondered whether a detention centre was planned for the site.

The sign refers to Villawood Properties, whose story began in 1989 with a 30-lot development in Bendigo. A syndicate of 16 friends and associates pooled their funds, knowledge and resources to deliver the cul-de-sac named Eaglehawke.

Following five further successful Bendigo projects in its first decade, Villawood made its first major expansion into Metropolitan Melbourne in 1999. To date, Villawood boasts a portfolio of over 60 completed residential projects.

Today, Villawood Properties predominately concentrates on large scale masterplanned communities which incorporate a combination of mixed-use town centres, residents’ clubs, educational facilities, large display villages and the creation of high quality parks and open spaces.

Over thirty years, Villawood has grown to become one of the most trusted residential land developers in Australia, with a legacy of innovative, community-focused developments spanning the Eastern Seaboard, including its new 800 home master community at Aldinga.

The Villawood Detention Centre, on the other hand, began as the Villawood Migrant Hostel, or Villawood Migrant Centre, in the Sydney suburb of Villawood, and was built in 1949 to house migrants from post-war Europe to work in local industries.

In 1976, a small section of the hostel was converted to provide security accommodation for persons awaiting deportation. This new section was named the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.

Creating a story – the world of writing, illustrating & reading books.

Festival Fleurieu 2025 (April 19th to 27th) will be the 11th Festival, the intent is to keep the spirit and shape of past festivals, with an innovative program to showcase the arts, culture, community and environment through a range of events within the Fleurieu Peninsula. The 2025 festival will focus on youth – our leaders of tomorrow.

Festival Fleurieu 2025 program will include a 2-day children’s literary festival with the aim to expose children from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the world of writing, illustrating and reading books to develop their literacy and artistic skills. There will be workshops on how to create a story and hopefully the children will be able to write their own story by the end of 2-day course. There will be guest speakers and authors to enhance the participates knowledge, skills and understanding of what is involved in ‘illustrating your text”. This event will be held at the Yankalilla Library and Culture Centre, for more information go to www.festivalfleurieu.com.au

Awesome Foundation Fleurieu – a group of 10 community minded business owners who each month contribute $100, awarded the August 2024 Fleurieu Foundation Awesome $1000 grant to the Children’s Writers and Readers Festival 2025. This grant will assist in the planning of the event and provide materials for the children participating in the festival with pencils, notebook, sharpeners, and paints.

If you are a non-profit organisation on the Fleurieu Peninsula and have an awesome project that needs some funding, then submit an application by COB on the last Monday in each month and let’s see if we can make you awesome. Awesome Foundation Fleurieu will not consider funding an international project.

Hello to all the supporters of the Wirra Creek Community Garden. After concern was raised of possible soil contamination to the site, the garden has now been cleared by council for any contamination and a diesel tank has been removed intact. This good news means that the site is fit for purpose again and the garden working bees will start again soon, as will a veggie share. The times for these will be decided very soon now we have the all clear and will be advertised via WCCG and WEC social media.

More exciting news is that a new pavilion is scheduled to be built in the garden over the next few months. The brick border in this photo shows the location. Shelter at last.
