"Dolphin II" by Norman R. Wright & Sons
The spectacular 61'9 "Dolphin II", designed by Ron Wright and launched by Norman R. Wright & Sons in 1967, was revolutionary in a number of respects and remains a head-turner to this day. She was the first NRW launch to be built using the cold-molded construction technique (double diagonal oregon planking), and utilised a highly efficient hull form incorporating a "half and half" chine formation that became a benchmark and feature of NRW designs moving forward -- delivering great performance and economy from her twin V8 Detroit diesels. A classic!

“Miss Moneypenny” was built in 1964 by Col Kliese at Toorbul. At 14’6 , and of strip-planked construction (now fully fibreglassed), she was originally designed for water skiing.
She is now in the fourth generation of the same family. The Hall family also now hold the 38’ “Kamara” , also built by Col Kliese.
Matt Hall tells us: “My great grandfather on my mum’s side bought her as the original owner had changed his mind about ordering her for skiing — and he used her around Redcliffe. Col asked if he wanted the ski pole fitted, but he said no as he wanted it for fishing. It was passed on to my grandfather who used it for a long time until he passed it onto me in March 2020. Ian Eastgate did some work at the end 2020 tidying her up. She was repowered in 2007 with her current Mercury 60hp, and she does about 32-35kts. I now work in Sydney, Dad occasionally takes her out, otherwise I try to take her out when there’s special events on like the Moreton bay classic when I’m home”.
Thanks, Matt! Great to hear stories of classic boats passed through generations.

“Jewel” on Moreton Bay.
A rare “Jewel” on Moreton Bay. A precious 42 foot, 1932 Tripcony. Still good for 11 knots from her 120hp Perkins. Still kept beautifully by her custodians.

Another gratuitous “Emma” post.
When launched, the boatbuilding community marvelled at her incredible performance for her 90foot length, returning a top speed of 26 knots at sea trials from twin 1,350 hp MTUs. These original powerplants were replaced with MANs in recent years. Faced with a choice, “Emma’s” owner, Mrs Nelson, decided to retain her performance and fit the requisite horsepower to preserve the sprint she was designed to achieve, “should they ever want to use it”.
Today motor yacht emma does 23 knots. Seen here in full flight. Her warped hull reminiscent of the legendary PT boats, with a fine entry, flattening out to large flat sections aft. Her flat wake demonstrates the efficiency of her great design.

When it comes to charismatic, classic wooden boats, they don’t come much pluckier than “Spinner”… The 21 foot, 103 year old pocket cruiser was first out of the blocks in the 2022 Moreton Bay Classic, and propelled by her vigorous 45hp Yanmar, she stayed in front of the field for a strong proportion of the “race”. A crowd favourite.
