Developing a solid swing ride beat: Spend a lot more time on the jazz ride pattern, in conjunction with a light four on the floor and two and four on your hat. Play along with a song like “Freddie Freeloader”, and don't even worry about the snare … yet. Play all the way through this song two or three times a day for a week's worth of practice sessions.

Next, play some very, VERY simple figures against that three-limb combination. Play the snare half as loud as you normally would. Keep it light and swinging until this balance of limbs feels natural to you. Then, and only then, should you add more complex figures in the left hand.

When having my students practice new exercises, I always remind them that the only part of the body that should be moving is the part that is playing. Too often, students jiggle their legs, bob their heads, or bounce on their throne while practicing. To me, these excessive movements are a sign of tension, and can actually be counter-productive in learning the primary exercise at hand. If we stay as still as possible when practicing, the body will learn that its default state should be one of RELAXATION.
