Do I really need to worry about sun protection in winter?

Yes!

While the sun's rays may not feel as warm or strong on your skin during the winter, its ultraviolet (UV) rays continue to break down your skin cells at a faster rate regardless of the season, resulting in a condition called photoaging.

Reducing free radicals is the aim of the game 💦

Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cells by stealing electrons. Antioxidants are the heroes that neutralise free radicals by donating an extra electron.

Having enough antioxidants is crucial for our well-being. Without them, free radicals can cause oxidative stress, leading to:

🔥Inflammation
🔥Cell damage
🔥Premature aging
🔥Chronic diseases

Here’s the truth!

Tap water, bottled water, and even filtered water have a positive oxidative charge, which can actually contribute to the formation of more free radicals!

So what’s the key?

when a free radical receives an electron from an antioxidant, it is neutralised and doesn’t go on to cause further damage.

An abundance of antioxidants is critical.

So, I hope the penny has dropped because your tap, filtered and even bottled water holds a positive charge and has ZERO antioxidant properties at all…

😱 HOW STRESS AFFECTS THE SKIN 😱

When your body is stressed, you release adrenaline and cortisol, the stress hormone. If you have a healthy stress response, this rise in hormones is temporary and the effect on your skin is minimal. But when a single stressful event is too much to handle, or when we experience repeated exposure to stress, these hormones stay active for too long and wreak havoc on our skin.

Cortisol triggers increased oil production which can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Additionally, chronic stress leads to inflammation. Inflammation not only prevents acne from healing, but can lead to flare-ups of skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis. Cortisol has even been shown to trigger hair loss.

Stress also speeds up the aging process. When we’re stressed, we experience a decline in the production of collagen, elastin and other skin proteins which reduce the skin’s elasticity and contribute to the formation of wrinkles. Not to mention, we spend far more time frowning or furrowing our brows when under stressful conditions.

What can you do about stress? Take steps to minimize unnecessary stressors in your life while also handling stress better.
Here are some suggestions:

🏋‍♀️ Exercise regularly. Physical activity is proven to alleviate the effects of stress on the body.

💆‍♀️ Incorporate “me time” into your day. Regularly taking time to do things you enjoy will help.

🧘‍♀️ Try stress relief techniques such as yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation.

😴 Get plenty of sleep each night

💧 Drink lots of water
