EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 10. | THAT’S A WRAP!

LOCATION: Reading Cinemas, Newmarket

The EMOTION IS DEAD Aussie Indie Cinema Tour is now officially over.

In three months I hosted 20 Event Screenings in 20 cinemas across Australia. Just over 1,700 people saw the film and it bought in $33,000 at the box office.

Highlights for me would be the massive launch party at the Capri with 650 guests and selling out Gawler Cinema and running the film simultaneously on two screens.

I loved the punk rock DIY road trip element of it-- Traveling to some of the most amazing indie cinemas in the country including-- THE SUN THEATRE in Melbourne, THE RITZ in Sydney, LUNA PALACE in Perth.

I’m so grateful to the cast members who joined me for Q&A’s in different cities and loved meeting and hanging out with the Q&A hosts in each spot.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out and supported our little indie film-- This was the only way we could get our film into cinemas and you buying a ticket and coming along has legitimised the film and proven to critics, distributors and exhibitors that an audience does exist for EMOTION IS DEAD.

I will 100% be doing this again. I’ve learned so much that I can now put into my next film-- Because this is all I wanna do for the rest of my life.

THE EMOTION IS DEAD AUSSIE INDIE CINEMA TOUR
July - Sept ’24 | Link in bio.
PERTH 11.09 | FREO 12.09 | BRISBANE 19.09
All with live post-screening Q&A’s.

I stopped drinking alcohol about 15 years ago, around the same time I start pursuing filmmaking full time and people always wanna know the reason why-- But there’s not one single reason-- It’s more like a massive list, which I’m gonna try and summarise--

I don’t drink alcohol because it ruins my clarity of mind-- Which is my primary tool as a Writer and a Director.

Drinking causes me to lose ambition, productivity and entrepreneurial hustle and I wouldn’t survive long as a self-employed filmmaker without these things.

Hangovers suck-- The day after was always filled with depression, anxiety and self-loathing and I made really unhealthy choices about food and exercise.

It’s also really expensive, especially in Australia, and it’s money I’d rather spend on travel, adventures, buying books, records, cinema tickets or investing that money into the films I make.

I have no issues with people who do drink, no judgement whatsoever, but for me I’ve learned it doesn’t work and as an all-or-nothing kind of guy-- The only way to do it was to cut it out altogether.

I've had bad days and fallen off the wagon a few times, but mostly I’ve stayed sober for 15 years and i’m pretty happy with that life choice.

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 06. | THE NUMBERS

LOCATION: Thornbury Laundry

We’ve just wrapped three Event Screenings in Melbourne and I though this would be a good time to give you a quick update on the numbers— So far EMOTION IS DEAD has screened at 15 cinemas to a total of 1,540 people.

So If the average ticket is 20 bucks, that’s a total box office of $30,000.
With a 50/50 split with the cinemas, that roughly 15 grand revenue for the film.

But there is considerable costs-- PR, Marketing, Poster printing, Postage, not to mention my own travel, accommodation and basic survival costs.

When I first planned the tour, I hoped it would be profitable, but I now see that that’s probably not gonna happen--

So what am I doing all this for??

Well-- The biggest value this tour has given EMOTION IS DEAD is credibility-- It’s legitimised the film with Critics, the Media and the Film Industry and given it a real chance at life after the tour.

I’m not gonna lie-- It’s been more work and more stress than I expected-- I actually had to cancel some of the smaller regional shows because I was just exhausted and overwhelmed and didn’t have the time or the money to do the marketing properly.

But I’ve learned so much already and I’m really excited for the four remaining screenings in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.

This might be the last time I ever get to see EMOTION IS DEAD on the big screen, so I’m gonna make the most of it.

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 05. | PUBLICITY

LOCATION: CBCB & ODFUB, Brunswick.

Indie film distribution is very DIY. Booking cinemas, printing posters and doing the marketing-- It’s all me. But one thing I knew from the very start I couldn’t do myself was the Publicity.

So I met with three PR firms in Adelaide and interstate, some film specific, some more general. Got pitches and quotes from these guys and eventually went with BPR - Belinda Public Relations - who are based in Rundle Street in Adelaide.

Belinda, Claudia, Susannah and the whole team had a really solid strategy from the very start and worked really hard over a period of 4-6 weeks to get EMOTION IS DEAD on as many media platforms as possible.

It started with an Advertiser photo shoot, I did over ten radio interviews, they got the film reviewed by professional critics for the first time and they even got our tiny film on the ABC News Breakfast show.

In total they achieved over $200,000 worth of media value for the film for an investment that was much much lower than that.

So key take-away is-- As an indie filmmaker-- You can’t do everything yourself. Sometimes you do have to invest in other people who have the skills, the contacts and the knowledge to get a far better result than you ever could DIY.
