EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 10. | THAT’S A WRAP!
LOCATION: Reading Cinemas, Newmarket
The EMOTION IS DEAD Aussie Indie Cinema Tour is now officially over.
In three months I hosted 20 Event Screenings in 20 cinemas across Australia. Just over 1,700 people saw the film and it bought in $33,000 at the box office.
Highlights for me would be the massive launch party at the Capri with 650 guests and selling out Gawler Cinema and running the film simultaneously on two screens.
I loved the punk rock DIY road trip element of it-- Traveling to some of the most amazing indie cinemas in the country including-- THE SUN THEATRE in Melbourne, THE RITZ in Sydney, LUNA PALACE in Perth.
I’m so grateful to the cast members who joined me for Q&A’s in different cities and loved meeting and hanging out with the Q&A hosts in each spot.
Thanks so much to everyone who came out and supported our little indie film-- This was the only way we could get our film into cinemas and you buying a ticket and coming along has legitimised the film and proven to critics, distributors and exhibitors that an audience does exist for EMOTION IS DEAD.
I will 100% be doing this again. I’ve learned so much that I can now put into my next film-- Because this is all I wanna do for the rest of my life.

DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL | Back Yourself
THE EMOTION IS DEAD AUSSIE INDIE CINEMA TOUR | Last screening this Thursday 19.09 @ Five Star Cinemas New Farm (Brisbane) with live post-screening Q&A with me, Gabby Llewelyn & Patty Glavieux | From 7PM.
There’s a saying in the film industry that it’s a stupid idea to invest in your own films, but if you’re a first time filmmaker, with no industry connections, where the hell is that money gonna come from?
I tried the “traditional” way, through government grants, attaching an established producer or distributor-- But I was rejected or ignored every single time.
The only way I could’ve made EMOTION IS DEAD was with my own cash-- And I raised this money making TV shows and commercials over four years.
Creating any form of art is a huge risk-- But if you really believe in what you’re doing, you have to back yourself and be prepared to lose everything, because waiting for someone to give you permission is a great way to make sure your film never gets made.

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 09. | INDUSTRY EMAILS
LOCATION: Luna Palace Cinemas, Leederville W.A.
One thing I’m doing to raise awareness for each screening is sending direct emails to people in the film industry. I send around 100 emails per city to Directors, Producers, Film Festivals, Film Schools, Talent Agents and Production Companies--
It takes about a day of work per city but hits a very specific target audience who already have an interest in film and has three main benefits:
1. The person I email might buy a ticket and come along to the screening.
2. They might share this information with their friends, colleagues or students.
3. And it could be a good relationship for me to form for future projects.
I’m careful with the tone of the email-- I make sure that I’m giving (information, content and tickets) rather than asking for anything— Most people never reply-- But I know that me and my film are in their inbox and hopefully in their consciousness and who knows what value this will have in the future.

July - Sept ’24 | Link in bio.
PERTH 11.09 | FREO 12.09 | BRISBANE 19.09
All with live post-screening Q&A’s.
I stopped drinking alcohol about 15 years ago, around the same time I start pursuing filmmaking full time and people always wanna know the reason why-- But there’s not one single reason-- It’s more like a massive list, which I’m gonna try and summarise--
I don’t drink alcohol because it ruins my clarity of mind-- Which is my primary tool as a Writer and a Director.
Drinking causes me to lose ambition, productivity and entrepreneurial hustle and I wouldn’t survive long as a self-employed filmmaker without these things.
Hangovers suck-- The day after was always filled with depression, anxiety and self-loathing and I made really unhealthy choices about food and exercise.
It’s also really expensive, especially in Australia, and it’s money I’d rather spend on travel, adventures, buying books, records, cinema tickets or investing that money into the films I make.
I have no issues with people who do drink, no judgement whatsoever, but for me I’ve learned it doesn’t work and as an all-or-nothing kind of guy-- The only way to do it was to cut it out altogether.
I've had bad days and fallen off the wagon a few times, but mostly I’ve stayed sober for 15 years and i’m pretty happy with that life choice.

EPISODE 08. | CINEMA ACTIVATION
LOCATION: Stoke Beach House, Manly & Fomo Cinemas, Brunswick East.
Motivating strangers to get off the couch, travel to a cinema and pay $20 for 89 minutes of entertainment is a pretty big ask— Especially in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis.
So I try to make every EMOTION IS DEAD Event Screening a little bit special.
I have a custom sandwich board out the front each cinema, hand-painted by the amazing MOON DOG in Adelaide. Classic archive footage from the 1979 Bathurst race is projected on a screen as people enter and I hand out free South Aussie snacks and drinks to punters before the screening.
I’m personally attending every session, dressed like and fool in a white Peter Brock pit-lane jumpsuit and there’s a post-screening Q&A after every session.
As filmmakers-- If we wanna compete with the free, mind-numbing, doom scrolling bullsh*t on peoples phones-- We have to make the theatrical experience as pleasurable, as immersive and as memorable as possible, otherwise people just won’t come.

I usually shoot these videos in a car, but I no longer have a car, I can’t get a car loan and don’t have the cash to even buy the sh*ttiest of sh*t box’s. But this is a blessing.
It’s better for the environment, it forces me to be out in the world, to breath in the air, hear the sounds and be among other people.
It also frees me from all the costs associated with a car ownership-- Registration, Insurance, Servicing, Petrol, Tolls and liberates me from the obligations and stresses of cleaning the car, Speeding fines and trying to find a carpark.
The key to surviving as an indie filmmaker is keeping your living costs as low as possible and outside of rent, there’s no bigger expense than car ownership, so right now, I’m super happy to be car-less, I feel liberated and free and I’m not missing it at all.

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 07. | INSTAGRAM
LOCATION: Coogee Pavilion
I’ve been trying loads of different marketing techniques to promote EMOTION IS DEAD on tour, but it’s really hard to know what’s actually working.
One thing I can measure and I think has been pretty successful is instagram ads--
I’ve been creating three bespoke instagram posts for every cinema screenings.
The first one is a fifteen second sizzle, like a little trailer, that I post two weeks out. The second is a ten image carousel with key art and review quotes that I post one week out and the third is a personal shout out video that I record inside the cinema and post about three or four days out from the screening.
I target each of these posts to within five Kilometres of the cinema and put about $5 a day behind each post.
In terms of engagement-- It costs about $1 per click-- People clicking the ad and going to EMOTIONISDEAD.COM.AU To buy a ticket-- The personal shout-out video performs about twice as well as the others at about 50 cents a click.
In total I’m spending around $100 per screening on instagram ads, so that means I need to sell about five tickets per screening to break even and my gut feel is that this is happening-- but again, it’s really hard to tell.

THANK YOU PETER PAGE!
Just wanted to shout out PETER PAGE HYUNDAI in Elizabeth for gifting me this amazing HYUNDAI STARIA for the EMOTION IS DEAD indie cinema tour.
Honestly I can’t imagine a better car for a road trip-- The panoramic windows, Apple car play with touchscreen, 360 degree cameras-- It’s a dream!
Without the support of Luke Page and the whole Peter Page team, the cinema tour wouldn’t have happened, so thank you so much guys for supporting South Aussie Storytelling and for helping to keep the Holden legacy alive!

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 06. | THE NUMBERS
LOCATION: Thornbury Laundry
We’ve just wrapped three Event Screenings in Melbourne and I though this would be a good time to give you a quick update on the numbers— So far EMOTION IS DEAD has screened at 15 cinemas to a total of 1,540 people.
So If the average ticket is 20 bucks, that’s a total box office of $30,000.
With a 50/50 split with the cinemas, that roughly 15 grand revenue for the film.
But there is considerable costs-- PR, Marketing, Poster printing, Postage, not to mention my own travel, accommodation and basic survival costs.
When I first planned the tour, I hoped it would be profitable, but I now see that that’s probably not gonna happen--
So what am I doing all this for??
Well-- The biggest value this tour has given EMOTION IS DEAD is credibility-- It’s legitimised the film with Critics, the Media and the Film Industry and given it a real chance at life after the tour.
I’m not gonna lie-- It’s been more work and more stress than I expected-- I actually had to cancel some of the smaller regional shows because I was just exhausted and overwhelmed and didn’t have the time or the money to do the marketing properly.
But I’ve learned so much already and I’m really excited for the four remaining screenings in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane.
This might be the last time I ever get to see EMOTION IS DEAD on the big screen, so I’m gonna make the most of it.

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 05. | PUBLICITY
LOCATION: CBCB & ODFUB, Brunswick.
Indie film distribution is very DIY. Booking cinemas, printing posters and doing the marketing-- It’s all me. But one thing I knew from the very start I couldn’t do myself was the Publicity.
So I met with three PR firms in Adelaide and interstate, some film specific, some more general. Got pitches and quotes from these guys and eventually went with BPR - Belinda Public Relations - who are based in Rundle Street in Adelaide.
Belinda, Claudia, Susannah and the whole team had a really solid strategy from the very start and worked really hard over a period of 4-6 weeks to get EMOTION IS DEAD on as many media platforms as possible.
It started with an Advertiser photo shoot, I did over ten radio interviews, they got the film reviewed by professional critics for the first time and they even got our tiny film on the ABC News Breakfast show.
In total they achieved over $200,000 worth of media value for the film for an investment that was much much lower than that.
So key take-away is-- As an indie filmmaker-- You can’t do everything yourself. Sometimes you do have to invest in other people who have the skills, the contacts and the knowledge to get a far better result than you ever could DIY.

EMOTION IS DEAD | INDIE FILM DISTRIBUTION 101
EPISODE 04. | REVENUE SPLIT
LOCATION: Cafe Deluxe, Kadina
We’ve finished our Adelaide metro run, screening seven times across three weekends, with total audience numbers at 1,168. That’s an average of 166 per screening.
My biggest learning so far is the power of a cinemas existing audience. The more a cinema can get behind your film, the more they shout about it on their social media and emails, the better chance people will show up, because the cinemas established audience already has a relationship with the place, they probably live close to it and there’s a good chance they’re already film lovers.
And a cinema will only be motivated to get behind your film if you’ve agreed a revenue split on ticket sales. That’s why I’m only screening EMOTION IS DEAD in cinemas that have offered a revenue share model, typically 50/50, and not screening at any cinemas that demanded an upfront hire fee-- Firstly because I can’t afford to pay an upfront fee, but there’s also a risk of actually losing money and paying the cinema to play my film, which is not the goal.
So, if you wanna know if your local cinema respects independent filmmakers and supports Australian cinema culture simply ask if they offer filmmakers a revenue split-- If the answer’s no, then you have your answer.
