Human Ethology (formerly Human Ethology Bulletin) is an online peer-reviewed journal that is completely open access, free to publish in and free to read. The journal publishes scholarly works within the broad research tradition of Human Ethology, such as: (1) Research Articles; (2) Theoretical Reviews; (3) Brief Reports; (4) Technical Comments; (5) Open Peer Commentaries; (6) Authors Responses to

Open Peer Commentaries; and (7) Book Reviews. The focus of Human Ethology is to provide a unique venue for the publication of empirical, theoretical, and review articles within the tradition of Human Ethology. The substantive content of Human Ethology is perhaps best captured by Tinbergen’s Four Questions, that may be asked of any behavior: (1) Proximate Mediation; (2) Behavioral Development; (3) Evolutionary History; and (4) Ultimate Adaptive Function. Human Ethology is particularly interested in studies where behavior is directly observed and recorded using a variety of methods, which might range from traditional ad libitum direct observation in natural habitats to automatic computer-aided behavior recording and analysis, as well as methodological articles describing those procedures for general application. Purely descriptive and inductive studies will also be accepted, provided they are thorough and methodologically rigorous.

Our Story

Human Ethology (formerly Human Ethology Bulletin) is the official journal of The International Society for Human Ethology (ISHE). It is an online peer-reviewed journal publishing scholarly works within the broad tradition of ethology as applied to humans. Human Ethology is open-access (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) and does not charge authors a publication fee.

ISHE was founded in 1972 and was producing a newsletter for circulation to members soon thereafter. The Human Ethology Newsletter became the Human Ethology Bulletin in 1995 and started publishing peer-reviewed scholarly articles in 2012, when the journal also moved to an on-line format. The Human Ethology Bulletin was renamed Human Ethology in 2019 and continues the practice of publishing one volume per calendar year, utilising the flexibility of the on-line format to add articles as they are accepted.

Ethology has close ties to many other disciplines including behavioural ecology, evolutionary biology, physical anthropology, cultural anthropology, comparative psychology, developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology and linguistics.
