Photos from Walter Werzowa's masterclass; an intensive four-day production workshop in Baden, Austria!

Walter's class was a truly hands-on experience for the lucky participants who attended.

This workshop was the only one this year featuring live players as part of the curriculum.

Over the four days, the participants were trained in skills including using AI in music, pitching to a producer, presenting their work to a director, understanding the process of spotting sessions, producing high-end "effects" from sounds recorded with a phone, writing music for a specific scene, and utilizing live players to enhance their sampled mockups.

On the last day, we had a flutist, violinist, and percussion specialist join our class to record the participants' music that they had written for a scene. The students had a wonderful time experimenting with HMW's highly professional instrumentalists and walked away from the class with knowledge and experience to help them thrive in their future projects.

Thank you, Walter, for your expertise in AI and media music and for being such a stellar tutor.

Group picture after a highly successful four-day masterclass with Julie & Steven Bernstein at the Hollywood Music Workshop in Baden, Austria. Julie & Steven, the composers of numerous animated shows, taught a class on writing music for animation.

During this four-day class, the participants were given a step-by-step guide to composing music for animation. Julie & Steven provided them with a scene to compose music for during the class. The participants began by sketching and finding the timings of the scene. Afterward, they created a "short hand/first draft" with lighter orchestration or only piano. On the final day, the participants presented a fully orchestrated version of the scene. Everybody did a fantastic job!

Julie & Steven are wonderful teachers as they are incredibly structured, engaging, and professional, yet they maintain a relaxed and safe atmosphere for people to bring their questions and music for feedback. They are truly masterful composers, and we are thrilled to have them as part of this year's installment of the Hollywood Music Workshop.

This class was full of laughter both during teaching hours and after! Thank you, Julie & Steven, and thanks to all of our international participants!

Smiling faces after an intensive, enriching, and inspiring masterclass given by Conrad Pope and Nan Schwartz at the Hollywood Music Workshop here in Baden, Austria.

Conrad and Nan covered a lot of astounding music throughout this class for an international audience of attentive and talented up-and-coming composers!

During the final day, the students shared their arrangements of "When You Wish Upon a Star," an assignment given by Nan every year. Every year, we get to hear brilliantly imaginative versions of this classic tune written by the participants.

Conrad and Nan are world-class musicians, and we are so honored to have them be a part of the Hollywood Music Workshop.

'Animation' with highly esteemed composers Julie & Steven Bernstein at HMW in Baden, Austria July 31 - August 3, 2024! Learn more about this unique opportunity by visiting our website: https://www.hollywoodmusicworkshop.com/animation/ Course Description: The ANIMATION course will take students from the blank page to the completed cue, covering the entire process of writing music to picture. The scoring process will be discussed from spotting the cue, choosing hit points, finding a suitable tempo, and laying out the score. Examples will be shown demonstrating each element discussed. Clips will be shown without the musical score and we will discuss the elements of the scene with attention to dramatics, character, timing, score set-up, special timbres and orchestration, as well as musical choices including harmony and melodic and rhythmic possibilities. Students will each score a short clip, utilizing everything we’ve discussed. All assignments will be reviewed in class, after which the cues will be presented as scored by the instructors. Our Story

HOLLYWOOD MUSIC WORKSHOP 2020 from July 13 - August 7, 2020

Over the past eleven years Hollywood Music Workshop has welcomed students from all over the globe, learning from top composers, arrangers and sound engineers in the beautiful City of Baden, just outside of Vienna. Many of those students have furthered their careers and gone out into the composing world, scoring for Film & TV. In addition, they made lasting friendships with mentors and other students.

“We are happy to welcome an illustrious group of mentors, consisting of successful Hollywood composers, orchestrators and engineers. Over the past years we have seen so many of our former students succeed in the industry, working on exciting projects. In addition, friendships have been built and a supportive peer network was established” say HMW directors Dimitrie Leivici and co-director Lilo Bellotto.

The 2020 Hollywood Music Workshop (HMW) will take place from July 13 through August 7 and includes 3, 4, 5 and 6 day masterclasses. After last year’s success HMW is happy to welcome back 2-time Emmy winner John Lunn (“Downton Abbey”) with SCORING FOR TELEVISION.

HMW is proud to welcome for the second time renowned Hollywood composer and lecturer at USC LA Garry Schyman, who teaches COMPOSING FOR VIDEO GAMES. Award-winning composer Joe Kraemer (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation) will be back in Baden with his class NAVIGATING THE TRIANGLE and Conrad Pope & Nan Schwartz will once again teach their popular class ORCHESTRATION AND ARRANGING. To round up the summer scoring academy, composers have the opportunity to RECORD THEIR COMPOSITIONS with a 50-piece orchestra - for the first time at the famous MUSIKVEREIN VIENNA. This amazing historic location will provide our participants with the best acoustic properties available, resulting in superior sound for each composer’s recording project. Joe Kraemer alongside Conrad Pope will guide participants through the recording process and will make sure that the compositions will be recorded professionally. Concert master and Hollywood Music Worskhop Director Dimitrie Leivici will lead the 50-piece orchestra and provide additional coaching. Scoring mixer and film composer Frankie Chinasky will be the lead recording engineer, leveraging the world class equipment of the sound stage and the control room.
