There is a sense of disconnection between our elected officials and our communities after elections.
Whether it is miscommunication or no communication at all, the population often feels their voices aren't heard year round.
Although there are district councils, some may not be active enough to be the voice of their communities.
It is very important for parliamentarians to stay connected to the people and the problems affecting our communities.
Parliamentary District Representatives "PDR", give the community direct contact with their members of parliament to voice communal concerns. This ensures their voices are heard and the connection between our elected officials and the people stays close.
It is my intention for us to find efficient ways to stay connected and be accountable to each other. -Dimar Labega DP #3

On July 24th we observe the birthday of DP’s cofounder, the late Dr. A. C. Wathey, affectionately called the “Ol Man”.
THE LEGACY
Two years short of his 100th birthday anniversary, Dr. Claude Wathey, the Ol’ Man of island politics, the legendary leader for 40 years of the Democratic Party of St. Maarten, would have been exactly 98 years old today. The legacy he left behind is one of visionary leadership, dedication and commitment to the people of the island and his staunch belief that left alone, and given the necessary “light,” the people will follow and thrive.
Dr. Claude Wathey’s political career began in 1951 when he ran at the bottom of the NVP list. Three years later, in 1954, he switched to the newly-established Democratic Party of St. Maarten, founded by his friend, Clem Labega as the first truly St. Maarten political party committed solely to cater to the interests of the St. Maarten people. In that election, when all the other parties that were branches of Curacao political organizations said the Old Age pension could not be raised, Claude and Clem campaigned that the DP would make it happen. They won the election and the Old Age pension was increased to Naf.55! That was 70 years ago! The DP said it could be done; and got it done. That is the legacy we stand on today.
Although Claude has passed on over a quarter of a century ago, his legacy still lives on. The DP, under Claude’s leadership, gave the island some 40 years of real stability.
No wonder the cry on everyone’s lips today is to “bring back the good old days.” It is not nostalgia; it is the realization that there is a political party – the Democratic Party - with the experience, the legacy, and the vision, under the inspired leadership of Sarah Wescot-Williams, which can make this happen for all. We have done it before; we will do it again!
So, as we celebrate the birthday of the DP’s legendary leader, Dr. Claude Wathey today, and continue to build on his legacy with the party’s 70th anniversary, we are committed to deliver, as we have always done, for the people of the island. We know that we cannot bring back the Ol’ Man, but we move on guided by the light he has given us; carrying the torch that will illuminate all the darkness that we are experiencing, literally and figuratively.
Happy Birthday, Dr. Claude Wathey! Thank you for your service to St. Martin and beyond.
