(Dancehall Mag) - Singjay Mr. Vegas is calling Buju Banton a hypocrite for criticising the lyrical content of Afrobeats when his own dancehall catalogue promotes violence.

The Boom Bye Bye artist recently appeared on Drink Champs, where he described afrobeats as “f**kery” which has failed to liberate Africans as has reggae music. In an online response, Vegas reminded Banton that he wasn’t always a righteous-projecting Rastafarian.

“What Buju may have forgotten is that his dancehall hits were not only very sexualized, some songs like Driva and Man Fi Dead promoted violence,” Vegas argued. “Therefore, it is hypocritical to point the proverbial righteous fingers at Afro musicians who are now making their mark on the global stage.”

(Dancehall Mag) - Bounty Killer called for an end to escalating violence in Trinidad whilst in the midst of his electrifying performance at the Magnum Tonic Wine Xplosion SummerStageTT concert event, held last Saturday night.

The Dancehall star called on communities, concerned citizens and the government of Trinidad & Tobago to work together to alleviate the scourge of crime and violence currently escalating in the country and shared several poignant and powerful anti-crime messages during his hour-long headlining performance, which began just around 2 am.

Killer told Overtime Media that he was happy to be in Trinidad again, but saddened and concerned about the reports of escalating crime and violence in his “sister country”. Speaking to the thousands assembled for the concert, he called out familiar areas such as St Paul St, Sea Lots, Belmont and Maraval and numbered gangs such as “6, 7 and 11” whilst advising those listening that “even the smartest criminals ended up in prison eventually” and adding that “most of them are actually dead”, before leaving the rhethorical question: “so why choose a path like that with no future”?

(Caribbean National Weekly) - Last Wednesday, Jamaican music icon Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, was released from prison after spending 13 years behind bars. Kartel, who walked free on July 31 following a unanimous decision against a retrial in the murder case of Clive “Lizard” Williams, is now prioritizing his health and overall wellness.

In an interview with FOX 5’s Lisa Evers, Vybz Kartel shared his excitement about his newfound freedom and his commitment to improving his health. “Healthwise, you know I’m working on my health right now, but the feeling of just being free is just an amazing feeling,” he said.

Throughout his incarceration, Kartel battled Graves’ Disease, a condition where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to produce excess thyroid hormones. This condition led to Kartel experiencing severe health issues under what many described as “inhumane” prison conditions. His physician, Dr. Karen Phillips, testified in court that Kartel’s heart function was below normal, putting him at risk of a heart attack or even death in his sleep.

Dr. Phillips, who was previously limited to seeing Kartel only four times a year while he was incarcerated, now plans to monitor him more closely. “I have appointments with my doctor on Monday, so I can have regular meetings with her, you know, and she can keep track of me in real time,” Kartel explained. He also mentioned that Dr. Phillips will be putting him on a special diet to ensure daily monitoring of his health, a significant improvement from his time in prison.

As Vybz Kartel embarks on this new chapter of his life, his focus remains on maintaining his health and well-being, with the support of his medical team and the freedom to pursue a healthier lifestyle.

(Dancehall Mag) - Wyclef Jean’s upcoming Reggae album, titled One Night In Kingston, promises a unique fusion of traditional roots Reggae and modern elements, which the Haitian rapper calls “Travis Scott Reggae.”

This is according to the album’s executive producer, Tom Jones, better known as Reggae/Dancehall singjay Panic, who explained that a contemporary approach — like YG Marley’s reinvention of Bob Marley‘s Crisis into the hit Praise Jah in the Moonlight — was essential for Reggae.

“The album is reggae with elements of [what] Clef calls that ‘Travis Scott reggae.’ Kids are turned off by the same old reggae their grandparents listened to. YG Marley took his grandfather’s song and made it new. Even before YG broke, we knew it’s that ‘now’ element that has been missing from Reggae,” Panic told Billboard.

(Caribbean National Weekly) - Skye Diamond might be more popular for being the daughter of the legendary dancehall artist Mavado but the upcoming dancehall artist is making a name for herself and following in her father’s footsteps to the pinnacle of her career.

“Closer” is one such track that will pave the way for Skye Diamond to do just that.

Released on July 26, “Closer” was produced by Levels_LVL and R0twist from Levels To Life Productions and is a collaborative effort between Levels_LVL and Skye Diamond. It is inspired by recent trends, providing a fusion between pop and dancehall. The lyrics are based on a romantic story that reflects on a girl who is in love but too shy to express her feelings. So, she secretly admires the guy from a distance, trying to build the courage to eventually make him hers. It’s a common theme portrayed by a talented artist in her own unique way.

(Caribbean New Weekly) - Dancehall artist Rygin King, who skyrocketed to fame with his breakout single “Tuff,” has been arrested and charged with weapons offenses in New York City.

The 29-year-old deejay, born Mathew Smith, was taken into custody by the NYPD 113th Precinct’s ‘Midnight Public Safety Team’ on July 8 as part of the city’s campaign.

The precinct announced the arrest on social media without naming Smith, stating, “Yesterday, 113 pct Midnight Public Safety Team made an arrest and recovered this loaded firearm. Excellent work! .”

Smith now faces four charges, including second, third, and fourth-degree possession of a firearm, ammunition, and criminal possession of a weapon. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is scheduled to appear in Queens Criminal Court on Friday, July 12. New York City, known for having some of the strongest gun laws in the U.S., could see Smith facing up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The “Squeeze Trigga” deejay, who is unable to walk following a near-fatal drive-by shooting in Westmoreland in 2020 that also claimed the life of his manager’s wife, has had a series of tragic encounters since his rise to fame.

19/06/2024

(Caribbean National Weekly) - In a monumental achievement for Jamaican and Caribbean cinema, the feature film “Chokehold,” starring Jamaican actress Sherando Ferril, has been showcased at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Following its success at Cannes, the film is set to make appearances at both the Essence and Toronto International Film Festivals (TIFF). This marks a historic moment as “Chokehold” is the first film of its kind with a lead actress who not only hails from but also resides in Jamaica, setting a new precedent in the international film arena.

Sherando Ferril’s performance has been central to the film’s success, earning accolades for her portrayal of a complex character navigating themes of gender violence—a topic that resonates globally. The film’s reception at Cannes was nothing short of spectacular, paving the way for its upcoming presentations at other top-tier festivals and spotlighting Jamaican talent on an unprecedented scale.

With the film’s journey from Cannes to Essence and TIFF, Sherando Ferril and “Chokehold” are not just participating in festivals; they are making history, inspiring a new generation of filmmakers, and advocating for the support that Jamaican artists deserve.

Joel Ayuk, the director of “Chokehold,” expressed his excitement, saying, “Our film was very well received at Cannes and the feedback was amazing. The comments on our cinematography, our music and the performance of our actors rivaled any other film on the roster.”

To date, “Chokehold” has won more than a dozen awards at global film festivals. The film was shot in St. Martin and is written, produced, and directed by Joel Ayuk of Cani Studios.

(Dancehall Mag) - Jada Kingdom’s 2022 GPP track is making the rounds following the release of a song by the same name from hip-hop acts Liana Banks and Saweetie.

Debuting last week, their song illustrates the transactional power of their lady parts – mostly receiving expensive gifts from their partners.

Despite the subtle song differences, Twinkle’s fans feel the singjay was slighted by the American artists.

“They stealing all the Jamaican sh** and using it,” DJ Crazy Neil commented on a promo post on Saweetie’s Instagram page. “How about bringing the Jamaicans to sing their sh**?”

One user countered that the history of recorded Jamaican music has seen the illegal covering and sampling of American records. Nonetheless, the disc jock held his ground.

“Facts but still American should do better.”
