🚀 Here's something exciting our students are sharing with each other to kick off the year!

They’ve been talking about AstroAnt, the tiny robot designed to inspect and diagnose spacecraft, rovers, and landers on the Moon.🌑

Before it heads to the lunar surface, the team behind AstroAnt took it to the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. With support from industry partner Castrol, this incredible environment served as the perfect analog for testing space exploration equipment. 🌋

It’s amazing to see what our students are discovering and sharing! 🌌

Wondering what to watch this weekend? 🌕🚗

Our Technical Manager, Haykanush Darbinyan, suggests checking out how NASA's engineers tackled the challenge of designing a rover for an environment no one had explored. Starting in the early 1960s, the project was filled with guesswork until the breakthrough idea of a collapsible rover—designed to fit in the limited storage of the lunar module and unfold with a simple pull. 🚀

The lunar rover featured innovative wheels made of a flexible mesh, capable of adapting to the Moon's rugged terrain. The Apollo 15 mission saw this game-changing rover hit speeds of six miles per hour—an exciting experience for astronauts, despite the bumpy ride. 🚙🌕

Check out the full video for a deep dive into how engineers transformed lunar exploration!

NASA began working on lunar vehicles in the early 1960s – but the project relied more on guesswork than engineering precision. After all, no one had any idea...

📚Looking for an interesting read today?
One of our team members, Manya Achoyan, suggests checking out this article on PhotoBot, a robot photographer that’s changing the game in photography. Created by Oliver Limoyo and his team at Samsung, PhotoBot uses a mix of human-robot interaction, large language models, and computer vision to capture the perfect picture. You tell it what kind of shot you want, and it presents reference images for you to choose from. Once you pick, PhotoBot adjusts its camera to match and takes the photo—often resulting in a shot better than you could have taken yourself. Manya finds this project especially intriguing as it blends technology, creativity, and practical problem-solving.

🎉 On December 6, Sanasar Babajanyan from the Institute of Physics presented a fascinating seminar on The Key Role of Cheaters in the Persistence of Cooperation.

In this discussion, he explored how cheaters—those who reap the benefits of cooperation without paying the cost—actually play a surprising role in sustaining cooperative behavior. Using a multilevel selection model, Sanasar Babajanyan showed how individual-level cheaters can contribute to group-level altruism, facilitating the overall growth and survival of cooperative populations.

These findings have broad implications for understanding the emergence of cooperation and host-parasite coevolution throughout the history of life.

💡A big thank you to Sanasar Babajanyan for sharing his groundbreaking work!
