Today, on Commemoration Day, the UAE honours those who have lost their lives while serving the country.
Wahat Al Karama in Abu Dhabi stands as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude as well as a place to reflect. If you’re in Abu Dhabi, you can visit this inspiring memorial as well as the visitor centre.

This one’s for the plant lovers!

We took a tour of Shajar Nursery at Aljada in Sharjah. The nursery grows the plants for all of Arada developments in Sharjah and elsewhere.

If you do the tour, you will be taken around on a golf cart and taken through the different stages of the trees and learn all about the different kinds which are planted around the Arada developments as well as the processes.

As nursery aims to be sustainable, it uses grey water from the developments.

After the tour, you go to the workshop area. We planted flame tree seeds in pots and I decided to take mine home to plant in my garden later. My friend wanted hers to be planted in the Arada development, so you get a number and you can track the development of your tree. You can even go and visit it and see at what stage it is in the nursery. When it's finally planted in a development, you'll know where it's planted and you can go and visit your tree!

We also received a small gift of a card embedded with mystery seeds. I can’t wait to see what mine turn into!

You can book a tour on the Shajar website. After the workshop, we went to The Hut cafe, which is surrounded on three sides by the nursery, making it lovely and green and shaded.
Parking is right outside and the tour is free of charge.

A few photos from our walk around the old village of Asimah in South Ras Al Khaimah and beyond.

It’s lovely to see the pride the local residents retain in their history, especially in the more rural areas.

If you want to walk beyond the village, you need shoes with a good grip as there’s lots of loose rock, gravel, etc.

Combine it with a hike at Wadi Arar or Wadi Tayyibah, a visit to Tayyibah Museum and Bait Al Mutawwa or the Flower Farm.

(You can see Tayyibah Museum on a blog post and Wadi Arar is on the hiking post. The road is in a worst state than before though due to all the rain in recent months.)
