AI cuts jobs in 8% of firms; upskilling to stop shedding

The Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) reported on Wednesday that 8 percent of its surveyed members reported a headcount reduction due to artificial intelligence (AI), but said it is optimistic that the number will not rise in the coming years.

At the 16th IT-Business Process Management (BPM) Summit in Parañaque Wednesday, IBPAP president Jack Madrid said there are more companies that reported headcount gains, or 13 percent of IBPAP members accounting for over 800,000 full-time employment (FTE) in the industry.

Madrid told reporters on the sidelines of the event that the 8 percent that reported a reduction only comprised five companies out of the 60 surveyed firms. The IBPAP chief said he expects that the number of companies that lose jobs to AI will not increase if ITBPM firms will continue to retrain and upskill their talent pool....

Philippines continues to show growth potential

The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), during its recent annual consultation visit to the Philippines from Aug. 27 to Sept. 6, noted that the Philippine economy continued to grow steadily at six percent in the first half of this year, driven by strong domestic demand and export recovery.

It observed that the labor market remained strong which helped boost domestic consumption. Inflation, it said, continued its declining trend from 2023, reflecting a moderation in international commodity prices, the government’s inflation-containing measures, as well as tight monetary policy......

Aussie shipbuilder in talks with for dev't of vessels

Cebu-based Australian-owned shipbuilder Austal Philippines is currently in talks with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for the possible development of a vessel that will match or even surpass the capabilities of vessels used by the China Coast Guard.

"In terms of the government, at the moment, we are working most closely with the Coast Guard. They seem to be the group that is dealing with the West Philippine Sea the most, based on a law enforcement approach rather than a military approach. So we are speaking to the Coast Guard on a regular basis," Austal Philippines president Wayne Murray said in a recent briefing at the Australian Ambassador to the Philippines residence in Makati City.

"There's no firm contracts at the moment but we've been working with their technical team to establish a vessel that would be suitable for the requirements to match what the Chinese Coast Guard is doing, or not match them, preferably be better than them.”

Murray said the vessel will be based on a proven platform that is currently being used by the Australian Coast Guard....

IPOPHL urges visual artists to enforce resale right

The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has urged visual artists to actively enforce their resale rights and offered some best practices they could adopt to capture the full benefits of this economic right.

Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR) Director Emerson G. Cuyo voiced this in his hybrid talk to over 50 visual artists attending online and at the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo on August 3, 2024. The talk was an initiative of Pinto Art Museum Founder Dr. Joven R. Cuanang and sculptor Ramon Orlina, the recipient of IPOPHL’s 2024 Gawad Yamang Isip Awards for the visual arts.

“This opportunity given by the Pinto Art Museum and Mr. Orlina allows IPOPHL to reach out to more visual artists and keep them informed to capitalize on their resale rights, ensuring they benefit from the increasing value of their works as they change hands over time,” Cuyo added.

Cuyo said visual artists often miss out on the financial rewards that other copyright holders enjoy. Unlike novelists or musicians, for example, visual artists do not profit or gain significant income from mass reproduction and widespread distribution or communication to the public of their works.....

Cebu Pacific, MCIA Launch Ground Equipment Solutions to Cut Carbon Emissions

Cebu Pacific (PSE: CEB), the Philippines' leading carrier, has been selected by Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) to formally launch a major initiative aimed at enhancing sustainable operations and operational efficiency using a bridge mounted equipment (BME).

In a ceremonial plug-in event, a CEB A321neo, operating flight 5J 5063 from Narita (Tokyo) to Cebu, connected to MCIA’s newly installed BME system. This technology includes a fixed power unit (FPU) and a pre-conditioned air (PCA) unit, providing ground power and cabin cooling without relying on the aircraft's jet fuel-powered auxiliary power units (APUs).
