Sonic branding

Creating a sound identity for a brand is a complex, lengthy and detailed process - even though the end result may be just a few notes. But those notes have emerged from many discussions, directions and interactions with the clients and focus group reports. A sound identity is as important as a visual identity - in fact the two should be counter reflective - each enhancing the message of the other - an emotional blend that expresses the brand in sound and vision. It is all too easy for someone just to knock out a few notes and call that a sonic logo but to create an identity that lasts and is truly reflective of the brand’s key emotional message is a process and an art. It must become entrenched in the human psyche and create the long term empathy that is key to branding success. Looking at some of our famous sonics such as Du, Emirates, One TV, Dubai TV to name just a few examples, clearly proves the point.

Radio

In this day of social media it’s easy to forget the very beginnings of beamed communication. Radio had that strange ability to be both a form of family entertainment (pre tv) as well as an intimate friend when listened to alone. Writing ads for radio is extremely difficult - there is no visual reference, and anyway, most radio ads are tactical rather than strategic. Nevertheless, social media aside, there is still a lot to be said for the value of radio advertising when it is clever, witty and well executed - most of which values are ignored or forgotten in this region. Is it because the radio stations knock out ads for free as part of the media package ? Is it because radio is seen as irrelevant ? Or is it - as I suspect, because creatives have not seen the possibilities of radio and clients tend to ignore its impact. Who is going to write a great radio campaign? It would be refreshingly impactful. You know we can.

Composition

I am often asked how we, as composers, write music or where the ideas come from. It’s always been a difficult question to answer because there is no real answer to the first phase of composition - which is the initial idea. That is what, I suppose, we would consider the strange
phenomenon of any form of creativity. A flash of inspiration, an idea that won’t go away, a sort of random yet forming thought or (in the case of music) a melody that circulates in your mind - and then the work begins. Really after that it’s more craft and experimentation. When you are working to picture there is a further dimension which involves making the images work as they are intended to - according to the wishes of writer and director. All in all, it’s demanding, often complex but hugely enjoyable.

Rights

We are proud to have been the company that spearheaded the development of music rights in the UAE. We were indirectly responsible for the ultimate establishment of a rights society in Abu Dhabi - through our pressure, initiatives, perseverance and investment . This awareness has benefitted and will continue to benefit creators of music for many years to come. It brings the UAE another important step forward in aligning with copyright owners globally to protect and promote their works. It is only through protection of artists’ works that the world of creativity can flourish and endure.

As I approach 25 years of BKP in Dubai i am thinking about our achievements past and our goals still to reach. It is great to reflect on all this and exciting to see what is coming for the next era. Creating original music was always the core of our business, even though we grew into many other areas of audio and film, but I know that we were responsible for developing what can only be described as the ‘sound of Dubai’ - from the original iconic branding of Emirates to the production of other major works and soundtracks. That western Oriental holistic sound that ineffably says ‘Dubai’, was born out of passion, dedication, and graft. Our new generation of composers will have that legacy to build on as they bring today's and tomorrow’s new wave of music to life.

Very proud that our much loved and special arrangement of the UAE National Anthem was performed by the Firdaus Orchestra at the closing ceremony for Expo 2020.

Over 2 years ago we pitched to be the Expo Music department. After countless presentations, workshops and various transformations from a resident Classical orchestra to a very American swing band and finally an incredible World Orchestra with some of the best musical talent from around the world, it's all over.
One of the proudest moments of our 21 year history.
