Several companies in the UAE are willing to shell out bonuses to attract and retain talent, according to recruitment experts in the country.

“Employers in the country and the region are increasingly using bonuses as a key tool to attract talent with some statistics suggesting up to a 35 per cent increase this year over 2022,” said Aparna Navin from Holcim Group.

The comments come a week after Emirates announced a whopping 20 weeks’ worth of bonus to its employees on the back on record-breaking results. Earlier in the year, another airline FlyDubai had also offered its workers a bonus of 22 weeks’ worth of pay.

Once air taxis are out flying in UAE skies, going from Dubai to Abu Dhabi could take just 10 to 20 minutes — with the ride costing about Dh800 to Dh1,500.

A top official from flying taxi company Archer Aviation on Thursday explained how the service would work in the country. The futuristic ride could cost a passenger about Dh350 when going from point A to point B in Dubai.

Nikhil Goel, chief commercial officer of Archer Aviation, agreed that such trips within cities would hover between Dh300 to Dh350 — but if a commuter is going from one emirate to another, then the fare would range from Dh800 to Dh1,500.

UAE health authorities have stamped out a total of 409 sites where dengue-causing mosquitoes were found, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

Concerns over dengue fever had emerged after the heaviest rain on record flooded several UAE neighbourhoods, creating ponds of stagnant water that could easily become mosquito breeding sites. Dengue fever is a viral infection that is transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Several measures have been taken to fight dengue fever in the UAE, said Abdul Rahman bin Mohamed Al Owais, Minister of Health and Prevention, as the matter was taken up in a Federal National Council (FNC) session on Wednesday.

Ireland, Spain and Norway announced on Wednesday that they would recognise a Palestinian state on May 28, saying they hoped other Western countries would follow suit, prompting Israel to recall its ambassadors.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said the move was aimed at accelerating efforts to secure a ceasefire in Israel's war with Hamas in Gaza.

Spain and its allies have spent months lobbying European nations, including France, Portugal, Belgium and Slovenia, to garner support for the recognition of a Palestinian state.

"Today, Ireland, Norway, and Spain are announcing that we recognize the state of Palestine," Irish Taoiseach Simon Harris said at a press conference in Dublin.

Gold prices in the UAE have been consistently on the rise, hitting one record after another over the past few weeks. However, there is another precious metal that has been outshining gold’s record rally: Silver. The commodity has significantly outperformed gold this year so far, with gains of nearly 33 per cent compared to gold's 17 per cent, according to an expert.

Spot silver prices recently surpassed the $30-per-ounce mark, hitting their highest point in more than a decade.

From an investment perspective, here is what its performance to date means, according to the expert: “Had an investor invested Dh10,000 in silver at the start of January 2024, he/she would have roughly Dh13,415. Had the person invested the same amount in 24K gold, he/she would have a final value of Dh11,701.”

Residential and commercial buildings located on the main roads in Sharjah’s industrial areas must be connected to the sewage network immediately, the Ruler of Sharjah said in a directive on Tuesday. The initiative will ensure preserving the environment, public health, and safety. It will also reduce the need for deploying tankers to drain flood water.

Dr. Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, said in an earlier phone interview: "We don't leave new housing projects in the emirate's cities like this. We plan the sewage, gas, roads, and greening. I follow every detail in these projects, and thank God, our country is developing in terms of housing and the required services."

For women in the UAE seeking privacy and comfort while basking under the sun and walking against the crashing waves, private beaches in the Emirates offer an exclusive space to women. These provide an environment where women can relax without concerns about modesty and security.

Early this week, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, launched the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, which is aimed at turning the emirate into the world’s best city to live in.

The strategy includes 200 projects and initiatives, as well as extending the length of night swimming beaches by 60 per cent, and designating new beaches exclusively for women.
