A Filipino vacationer departing Los Angeles for Dubai on January 8, 2025, captured a striking video of thick black smoke blanketing a mountain visible from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The footage shows the severity of the ongoing wildfires devastating parts of Southern California.
According to a Reuters report, the wildfires have rapidly spread, consuming nearly 7,000 hectares in the Palisades area alone. The fires have destroyed over 2,000 structures, caused at least five fatalities, and forced the evacuation of over 100,000 residents.
Efforts to combat the fires are reportedly being hindered by water shortages, with reserves in neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades running dry early on Wednesday, January 8. Over 7,500 firefighters are battling the blazes, which remain uncontained, according to the New York Post.
The smoke captured in the video reflects the hazardous air quality across Southern California, with advisories affecting approximately 17 million residents. The worsening conditions have caused delays and disruptions in flights at LAX and other airports, further complicating the region’s challenges.
The wildfires, fueled by strong winds exceeding 50 mph, have also raised concerns about arson. Neuroscientist and podcaster Andrew Huberman shared footage of individuals allegedly setting fires in downtown LA, News.com.au reported.
