More than 3 million Muslims gathered at the Grand Mosque in Mecca on the 23rd night of Ramadan, marking one of the largest turnouts during the holy month.

According to Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah Tawfiq Al Rabiah, the mosque saw a consistent flow of worshippers throughout the day, with over 592,000 attending the Fajr prayer and numbers steadily increasing through Isha and Taraweeh, which drew more than 732,000 worshippers.

Umrah pilgrims also came in droves, with 662,500 entering through the mosque’s gates. The King Abdulaziz Gate recorded the highest footfall with 235,800 pilgrims, followed by King Fahd Gate (172,700), Bab Al Umrah (111,400), Bab Al Hudaybiyah (69,600), and Bab Al Salam (32,300).

The surge in worshippers is largely attributed to the spiritual significance of Laylat Al Qadr, believed to occur on one of the odd nights in the last 10 days of Ramadan. Many Muslims intentionally seek to pray at the Grand Mosque on these nights in hopes of witnessing this sacred event.

Authorities continue to implement advanced crowd control systems to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims as the final days of Ramadan approach.

Budget airline Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has announced two new destinations from the UAE capital, offering affordable travel options to Beirut, Lebanon, and Gabala, Azerbaijan.

Flights to Beirut will begin on June 4, 2025, operating three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—with fares starting at Dhs359. Later that month, on June 19, Wizz Air will launch flights to Gabala, also three times per week—on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—starting at just Dhs169.

Tickets are already on sale, and to celebrate the expansion, the airline has launched a three-day promotion offering 20 percent off fares across all routes.

Johan Eidhagen, managing director of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, highlighted the significance of these new routes, describing Beirut as a cultural and business hub and Gabala as a hidden gem ideal for outdoor adventures. He emphasized the airline's commitment to making travel more accessible and expanding connectivity from Abu Dhabi.

MUST READ | Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has opened a new three-lane bridge designed to streamline traffic from Infinity Bridge through Al Mina Street to the intersection of Sheikh Rashid Road and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street.

The newly launched 1,210-metre bridge can handle up to 4,800 vehicles per hour and is part of Phase 4 of the massive Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project—one of the RTA’s largest infrastructure upgrades.

This phase covers 4.8 km of Sheikh Rashid Road and includes the construction of five bridges totaling 3.1 km, boosting overall capacity to 19,400 vehicles per hour.

RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the bridge enhances access to several key residential and commercial areas such as Al Karama, Al Raffa, Al Hudaiba, Al Jafiliya, Al Mankhool, and Al Kifaf.

Two other major bridges have already been completed under this phase, and the final two are expected to open in the second quarter of 2025. Once fully completed, the entire project is expected to benefit around one million residents, drastically reduce travel time from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes, and bring in an estimated Dh45 billion in economic gains over the next two decades.

Dubai’s commitment to excellent customer service was recently highlighted by a special mention from the city’s top leader. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, praised Yousef Mohammed Abdullah, an employee at a vehicle inspection and registration centre in Al Qusais, for his exceptional work ethic and attitude.

The recognition came after a report from the government’s mystery shopper program reached Sheikh Mohammed. Impressed by Yousef’s dedication, efficiency, and cheerful demeanor, the Ruler shared photos of the employee on social media, calling him a "diligent young man" who is "proactive in serving people."

Customers at the centre reportedly appreciated Yousef’s willingness to go the extra mile, whether by clearly explaining procedures or assisting them with their mobile phones. His efforts stood out in a city that continuously aims to raise the bar in public service.

The mystery shopper initiative is also used to identify areas needing improvement. Last December, the Ruler called out three managers for blocking public access to their offices—an action contrary to Dubai’s policy of maintaining open doors to the community.

Filipinos looking for job opportunities abroad may find Finland an appealing destination, as the country actively recruits skilled workers across various industries. With monthly salaries reaching over P96,500 (€1,600) and equal pay policies for foreign employees, Finland offers promising opportunities for professionals in healthcare, hospitality, IT, and caregiving.

The hiring push follows the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) between the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on January 16, ensuring fair treatment and workplace protections for Filipino workers.

Finland, ranked as the world’s happiest country for seven consecutive years, also provides avenues for family reunification. Workers who meet income requirements can bring their families, with support available for spouses to find jobs and children to enroll in school.

With an aging population, Finland is particularly in need of nurses, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals, with salaries in these sectors reaching up to P200,000 per month. Senior IT professionals can expect similar compensation packages.

As of 2023, over 12,770 Filipinos are working in Finland. Those interested in applying must secure a job offer from a Finnish employer accredited by the DMW, apply for a work visa via the Enter Finland platform, and submit the required documents, including proof of qualifications and health insurance.

The UAE has secured the 21st spot globally and remains the happiest country in the Arab world in the 2025 World Happiness Report. The annual ranking, compiled by the Well-being Research Centre at the University of Oxford in collaboration with Gallup and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network, placed the UAE ahead of major nations such as the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The report evaluates various factors contributing to quality of life. The UAE scored 6.759 out of 10 in life satisfaction, ranked seventh in per capita GDP, 23rd in freedom, and 19th in willingness to donate. It also placed 16th in volunteering hours and 12th in recovering lost items.

Finland topped the global rankings, followed by Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and the Netherlands. Other countries in the top 30 include Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK, the US, and Kuwait.

Dubai Government employees will observe Eid al-Fitr holidays from the 1st to the 3rd of Shawwal 1446 AH, as per a circular issued by the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR). Regular work will resume on the 4th of Shawwal.

If Ramadan extends to 30 days, the final day of the holy month will also be included in the holiday break. However, employees on shift schedules or those working in essential public services are exempt from the directive. Relevant entities will determine work schedules for these employees to ensure uninterrupted public services during the holiday period.
