SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

Subject-verb agreement is an agreement between the subject of a sentence and the verb in the sentence. The verb that directly agrees with the subject is called a finite verb.

Example:
1. Edson is my brother.

"Edson" is the subject of the sentence. The finite verb is "is". Edson is singular, so the finite verb also takes the singular form to agree with the singular subject. If the subject is plural, the finite verb becomes plural too. The mission is to agree with each other; to keep their relationship; to do the same thing; etc.

SUBJECT-VERB DISAGREEMENT
Subject-verb disagreement is the opposite of the subject-verb agreement. This is when the finite verb does not agree with the subject.

Example:
1. The boy are coming.

"The boy" and "are" have no agreement; they disagree with each other. The subject is singular, whereas the finite verb is plural. This is wrong.

CHALLENGE
Many people face a challenge when the subject is surrounded with modifiers carrying nouns in them. They get confused as to which noun they can choose to be the subject. In this case, don't worry about the modifiers; the finite verb does not agree with the modifiers; it agrees with the root of the subject being modified by those modifiers.

Example:
1. EDSON whose several books focus on teaching English grammar to students and teachers IS my brother.

Here, the subject is "Edson whose several books focus on teaching English grammar to students and teachers", and it has more than one noun. This confuses many learners; they find it difficult to choose the noun that should agree with the finite verb.
