Poultry business thrives
By Beatrice Phiri

Poultry business continues to thrive amidst the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic.

Whilst some enterprises in both formal and informal sectors have been left crippled by the COVID 19 pandemic, the opposite is true for the poultry industry.

This publication carried out a survey on poultry feed companies in Kwekwe and discovered that the sector has not been grossly affected by the COVID 19 pandemic and the implemented lockdown.

Speaking to this publication Fifeed Manager Chiedza Chari said that business is lucrative.
"Sales have rapidly increased for broiler and layer feed range during this COVID 19 period.
Almost everyone wants to be involved in the chicken project, since meat imports are a bit challenging demand for chickens has greatly increased, " said Chari.

Some companies have shut down whilst others have downsized workforce due to financial constraints induced by the ongoing pandemic.

As a result a lot of people have channeled their attention to farming and poultry industry for survival.

A poultry entrepreneur Rudorwashe Ncube said the chicken project has been rewarding.

"Before lockdown I used to sell my bales in Kwekwe rank but since, the ban imposed on informal traders in the early days of lockdown period, I ventured into the chicken project and its really worth it.
I dont have regrets at all, infact its advantageous to manage all aspects of broiler life af my home, only to visit the town for booking, collecting chicks and purchasing the feed, unlike commuting to town daily to sell my bales like I used to do," she said.
"Though the pandemic has an impact on a number of things am glad through the chicken project I am earning a living and taking care of my family, "she added.

"Broiler farming has proved to be the most profitable business but my greatest concern is who will be the customer when a lot of people have embarked on this layer and broiler feed project," echoed another client Elvis Mberi.
