Three individuals have found themselves in hot water with the law after allegedly operating an unlicensed money transfer business that flouted Zimbabwe’s exchange control regulations.

Neville Sunungurai Mutsvangwa (44), Elias Majachani (45), and Simbarashe Tichingana (38) were hauled before the Harare Magistrates’ Court, facing a slew of charges related to their illicit financial activities.

Prosecutors allege that between January 2019 and May 2024, the trio established an unlicensed outfit called Mumba Money Transfer Services, which they advertised online to attract clients in the capital city. In doing so, they are said to have violated Zimbabwe’s Bank Use Promotion and Suppression of Money Laundering Act, as well as the Exchange Control Act.

According to court documents, the accused individuals employed a combination of electronic funds transfers and physical cash to carry out their shady transactions, utilizing foreign bank accounts to obscure the origins of the funds.

The long arm of the law caught up with the alleged fraudsters on May 8, 2024, when they were apprehended by the police. A search of their premises uncovered a trove of evidence, including 4 smartphones, 45 SIM cards, 4 computers, a point-of-sale machine, 28 debit cards (15 of which were issued by foreign banks), 3 money counters, and a register of transactions, as well as US$3,890 in cash.

The state has vehemently opposed the trio’s bail application, and the case is set to continue on Monday, May 13, 2024, as the investigating officer takes the stand to provide further testimony.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the government’s crackdown on illicit financial activities, as it seeks to maintain the integrity of Zimbabwe’s financial system and protect its citizens from predatory schemes.

Setting It Right: Debunking Falsehoods Surrounding Apostle B. Java’s Meeting with Prophet Angel

By Alfred Mazungunye

A recent picture circulating online, showing Apostle B. Java alongside Prophet Eubert Angel with a caption alleging that the Apostle went to apologize, has been revealed as a malicious fabrication. This narrative, designed to serve the author’s intentions and manipulative handlers, must be corrected to reveal the truth behind the meeting.

Although a meeting did take place between Apostle Java and Prophet Angel, it was not intended for apologies. The assumption that the Apostle sought forgiveness is unfounded and arose within 24 hours of the meeting, spreading misinformation. It is disheartening to witness Prophet Angel’s followers instantly jumping to conclusions about Apostle Java’s intentions.

Apostle Java stands firm in his principles and unwavering in his faith, serving as a beacon of integrity and a role model. He avoids unnecessary conflicts and focuses on his mission of preaching the Gospel and guiding souls towards the light.

Despite his dedication, there are individuals like Jay Israel who, driven by jealousy, work tirelessly to undermine Apostle Java’s ministry.

The orchestrated attack on Apostle Java by Prophet Eubert Angel is part of a pattern of similar actions targeting other religious figures to maintain power.

Nevertheless, it is essential to clarify that the issue has come to an end. THE OBSERVERZIM

AstraZeneca withdraws Covid vaccine worldwide after admitting it can cause rare blood clots

LONDON — AstraZeneca is withdrawing its Covid-19 vaccine worldwide, months after the pharma giant admitted the drug could cause rare but life-threatening injuries.

The British-Swedish drugmaker has already withdrawn its EU marketing authorisation for the vaccine, branded Vaxzevria since 2021. The authorisation is the approval to market a drug in EU’s member states. The withdrawal was due to a “surplus of available updated vaccines” against new variants of the novel coronavirus, the company said.

The application to withdraw the vaccine from the EU was made on 5 March and came into effect on 7 May.

“As multiple variant Covid-19 vaccines have since been developed there’s a surplus of available updated vaccines,” AstraZeneca said, adding that this led to a fall in demand for Vaxzevria, which is no longer manufactured or supplied.

AstraZeneca recently admitted that its vaccine, initially called Covishield, could cause rare side effects like blood clots and low blood platelet counts, The Telegraph reported.

The admission came after the company was slapped with a class action lawsuit in the UK which claimed that the vaccine had caused deaths and severe injuries and sought damages up to £100m for about 50 victims.

“It is admitted that the AZ vaccine can, in very rare cases, cause TTS. The causal mechanism is not known,” AstraZeneca said in court documents in February, the newspaper reported.

TTS is Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome, which is characterised by blood clots and low blood platelet counts in humans.

AstraZeneca’s vaccine was developed in collaboration with Oxford University and produced by the Serum Institute of India. It was widely administered in over 150 countries, including Britain and India.

Some studies conducted during the pandemic found the vaccine was 60 to 80 per cent effective in protecting against the novel coronavirus.

But subsequent research found it caused some people to develop potentially fatal blood clots.

AstraZeneca’s admission that the vaccine could potentially prove lethal ran counter to its insistence in 2023 that it would “not accept that TTS is caused by the vaccine at a generic level”.

The World Health Organization also confirmed that the vaccine could have fatal side effects. “A very rare adverse event called Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome, involving unusual and severe blood clotting events associated with low platelet counts, has been reported after vaccination with this vaccine.” _*— IndependentUK*_

Zim man who killed ex with a skewer in front of her children should have been deported from UK 20 years ago

A murder victim’s family have told of their fury after discovering her killer was an illegal immigrant who should have been deported 20 years ago.

Zimbabwe-born Obert Moyo, 46, had been able to stay in this country despite three previous attacks on women.

He was jailed for life last week with a minimum term of 27 years for stabbing his former partner Perseverance Ncube, 35, through the heart with a foot-long meat skewer in front of her children aged ten and 12.

As he was sentenced, it emerged that jealous Moyo had overstayed on his visa in the early 2000s and went on to commit crimes against women prior to the murder in Salford.

Ms Ncube was an Avon lady known as Percy. Her sister Christine Chiriseri, 28, said the family only discovered the killer was an illegal immigrant after his arrest.

She added: ‘I was very angry and upset because all of this tragedy could have been avoided if people had done their jobs properly.

‘We all felt very let down by the Home Office and the people who should have made sure he was deported.’

Ms Chiriseri, who is taking care of the children, said: ‘I am reeling over everything that has happened.

‘I am trying to move on from the whole situation but I still have to process and understand what happened.

‘I still feel very angry. It was a short-term relationship and it cost my sister her life.’ Moyo, who admitted murder, had been convicted of harassing women in 2007 and 2009, with the latter leading to a six-month sentence.

In 2013, he was jailed for ten years with an extended licence for attacking another ex-partner in Brighton.

The victim was working at a care home when Moyo broke in through a window by unscrewing it and burning it with a blowtorch.

Once inside and armed with numerous weapons including two knives and a screwdriver, he went on to repeatedly punch her, cut her with the knife and strangle her.

He was convicted of wounding with intent, threats to kill and aggravated burglary.

On his release, instead of deporting him as an ‘overstayer’, the Home Office fitted him with a tag.

The murder trial at Manchester Crown Court heard Moyo failed to tell his probation officer as part of his licence conditions that he had started a new relationship with Ms Ncube, a single mother with jobs as a childminder and a bookkeeper.

Moyo forced his way into Ms Ncube’s home on November 10 last year and attacked her in her bedroom before chasing her into the street and stabbing her.

Detective Sergeant Fiona Manning said: ‘Percy’s family deserves answers as to why this man… was allowed to remain in this country illegally. Had Moyo been deported, Percy’s children would still have a mother.’

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘The Government is doing everything possible to reduce legal challenges and to increase the numbers of foreign national offenders being removed.’
