Dear Charlene
I'm 29 years old. My ex-girlfriend regularly checks up on me but I'm not comfortable talking to her because it brings back memories. She's very nice to me and i don't want to hurt her by telling her that she shouldn't talk to me. What should I do?
Confused

Dear Writer
You may need to revisit how you broke up and see who caused the break up. There is always a danger of attachment and also the crisis of regret especially from the one who caused the break up. It’s important to distinguish your relationship as well as closure as it seems that after the breakup none of you got closure if she is your ex so that you know how to handle the relationship afterwards. Maybe you tolerate her because you like the memories of your relationship that she brings you! This is the reason why sometimes exes get back together because they continue communication. It seems you still have feelings for her but you would rather not walk down that road with her again. Not telling her this is not good. Now under the current circumstances you may need talk to your ex and explain to her how it is not in the best interest of both of you that she continues to reach out to you. She maybe in a relationship crisis and failing to move on. Maybe define the boundaries of your relationship with her and be open to her about how you feel about her check-ups and how you want your new unromantic relationship to be like. Get closure, it will help both of you. Talking to her may help both of you. It will not hurt her if you do it in a good way.

"I Fear Marriage Commitment".

Dear Charlene,
I am a lady aged 27 and my boyfriend is 30. I am in a happy relationship and my partner is promising to marry this year (2022). Every time l think about marriage I feel fear and I'm thinking what if my partner changes after marriage. Is it normal to have such fear?

Dear Writer,

It is very normal to have such fear and it could be due to some insecurities brought by previous experiences or situations you have been exposed to probably in your family. Issues of marriage are complicated so you need to understand where this fear is really coming from. However you need to deal with and address this fear and not let it affect your relationship and the plans you are working on with your partner. It’s completely normal to be fearful of new beginnings as you are about to get into a lifetime commitment in an area you have never gotten into and where never taught about. I am sure that you have heard and seen quite a lot when it comes to issues of marriage so when now you are preparing yourself to join the married peoples club there are fears that you will probably definitely have. I think that it’s very important that you begin to talk to your fiancée about this fear because he need to give you that as surety and guarantee of certain things that you are fearful about. Maybe you are fearful that when you get married your spouse might cheat on you or might leave you etc so it’s important that you talk about this and also get to know and understand his fears as well. This s also why you have to go through pre-marital counselling before you get married as it will help address this issue and more as well as give the counselor room to discover some hidden things you might not have necessarily said out but will help build you relationship and eventual marriage. All the best in your relationship and your pending nuptials.

LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP WOES

Dear Charlene,
I am a woman aged 36 and my boyfriend is 38 years old.
l dated him for 1 year 10 years back and he is now back in my life and we have been together for 3 months. He is now staying in and I am here in . l ask him why he does not reply my messages at times and he says his still trying to reconnect with me as we lost each other back then and now he has a lot of things to do. He is asking me to take things slow so that we can reconnect again. My question is he serious about me or not.

Dear Writer,
Long distance relationships do have some challenges of their own but they are workable. From what you are writing it’s apparent that this man is not as committed to you as you would want him to be. You may need to ask yourself what he has been up to for the past 10 years though. You guys have made a decision to re-connect and for some reason he reads (I’d think) and decides not to reply your messages. Maybe his thinking about your relationship, digesting the reality and the 10 years break and does genuinely needs space. His probably not ready for whatever level of commitment that you might feel you are at or you should be at. He may now have other women in his life and you could probably be one of the rest. Have you both spoken about what it is you want to develop the relationship into? It’s important that you discuss this and the terms underlying your getting back together like a committed engagement leading to marriage or you are just having fun. 3 months is enough time for the two of you to have had this discussion. I assume that when you started dating he would reply your messages so maybe consider that the relationship is probably not working for him and he just doesn’t have the courage to tell you. What is going on right now could be a sign that he could be pulling away. Pulling out of a relationship is difficult so some people will leave you to figure it out for yourself. I believe that if someone really loves you and is fully committed to you they will go all the way for you. If they don’t reply your messages on time they will apologize and give an explanation in order to put your mind and feelings at rest. They will always take you as first priority. Seeing that this is bothering you I suggest that you start asking what it is you are to him, where the relationship is going and you equally need to know if there is somebody else in his life otherwise at first glance this man is not committed to you and he most probably has other options. All the best.
