The United States of America has introduced a new sanctions regime on that will punish individuals involved in election management and the judiciary for allegedly suppressing opposition during elections.

The measure, dubbed a visa restriction, is likely to elicit a strong response from Harare, as it amounts to interference in local processes. Already, the US has sanctions in place against Zimbabwe aimed at institutions and individuals that allegedly undermine democracy and commit human rights abuses.

The opposition has over the years complained about rigged elections and uneven playing field, including alleged compromised institutions of electoral management and the courts.

And, on Monday, the US Secretary of State obliged by announcing โ€œa new visa restriction policy for undermining democracy in Zimbabweโ€.

The punitive measures will immediately apply to those fingered in the elections held last August.

โ€œUnder this policy, the United States will pursue visa restrictions, pursuant to Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, for individuals believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy in Zimbabwe,โ€ Blinken said in a statement.

โ€œSuch acts may include manipulating or rigging the electoral process; disenfranchising voters or preventing individuals from exercising their right to vote; excluding members of the political opposition from electoral processes; restricting the ability of civil society organizations (CSOs) to operate and engage in democratic, governance, or human rights related activities; or intimidation of voters, election observers, or CSOs through threats or acts of physical violence.

โ€œThey may also include engaging in corrupt acts, including bribery, that undermine the electoral process; interfering with the independent operation of the judiciary during its adjudication of electoral cases; or abusing or violating human rights in Zimbabwe.โ€

Ex-CBZ manager ordered to pay US$82k

By Judith Nyuke
Court Correspondent
Former senior manager at CBZ Bank and seasoned banker, Norman Sambaza, has been ordered to pay US$82,000 after failing to settle the debt two years ago.

This decision by the High Court came after Sambaza failed to defend himself against the claim filed by one Damascus Tazvitya Mabeka. In response to the judgement, Sambaza lodged an application to halt its ex*****on.

However, Justice Happias Zhou rejected the application after ruling that it was solely designed to postpone the payment to the creditor.

โ€œMore than two and a half years later the applicant has not paid a cent.

โ€œThere can be no real and substantial justice in staying ex*****on in these circumstances where the substance of the claim is not being disputedโ€ฆ

โ€œThe conduct of the applicant after the granting of the default judgment betrays an entire want of care.

โ€œHe does not expect the court to accept his version that from 2 March 2023 (or whenever it was that he had last communicated with his legal practitioners) he never checked on the progress of the case for more than six months only to be reminded about the case by the service of the writ of ex*****on,โ€ read part of the judgment.

The case originated from a lawsuit filed by Mabeka against Sambaza, seeking payment of a debt amounting to US$82,280, plus interest.

Mabeka also requested a court order declaring a specific immovable property, known as stand 980 Strathaven, as specially executable.

The case was scheduled for a pre-trial conference on March 2, 2023. However, Sambaza did not attend the conference, even though his legal representative was present.

After the default, a court order was issued in favor of Mabeka who caused a writ to be issued.

The writ and the attachment of an immovable property compelled Sambaza to file the current application.

Sambaza gained notoriety as he grabbed the headlines sometime in 2017 after assaulting his wife and children over a sadza dispute.

Former CIO boss, Happyton Bonyongwe (63) has been removed from the United States' list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN). The removal of , a once-feared securocrat and former Justice Minister under Robert Mugabe, was confirmed in an updated list this Thursday, Nov 30.
SDNs are individuals and entities located throughout the world that are blocked pursuant to the various sanctions programmes administered by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac). SDNs can be front companies, parastatal entities, or individuals determined to be owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, targeted countries or groups.
The US maintains a sanctions programme on Zimbabwe, that includes blacklisting of Government and ruling party-linked individuals and companies, which the US claims are responsible for human rights abuses. Harare contends that the sanctions are meant to cripple the governing party and administration to aid regime change.
The US has progressively updated lists of blacklisted peoples often removing the dead or those that are no longer influential in Government.
Bonyongwe was Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister for slightly over a month, before the November 2017 coup that swept away Mugabe, paving way for .
The says regarding Zim sanctions: "Sanctions are not intended to be permanent but to incentivize changes in behavior. Each removal is based on a thorough review and is part of an ongoing effort to keep the sanctions program current, focused, and relevant."

Zimbabwe care workers invited to UK โ€˜exploited on grand scaleโ€™

Foreign care staff invited to the UK to help fix a chronic worker shortage are being โ€œexploited on a grand scaleโ€, a trade union has said, after it emerged some had been effectively paid as little as ยฃ5 an hour and charged thousands of pounds in unexpected fees.
Zimbabweans, Nigerians, Indians make up the majority of care workers in post-Brexit Britain, through a special visa for care workers, but life has been hell, with reports of exploitation and disillusionment for those that had hoped for better life.
The are also cases of fraud and deception by sponsors of visas, leading to growing concern about the emerging modern day slavery under a scheme of โ€œbonded labourโ€.

Former American diplomat, who "finally" died today, was a notable character in international diplomacy and geopolitics. He gained infamy for ochestrating coups and installing US puppets in South and Central America, destabilisation in Vietnam and other eastern countries as well as support for apartheid in South Africa between the late 1970s and 1990s.

Scholars have recorded that Kissinger declared that, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and South Africa were but part of "black Africa", essentially meaning that he supported racial segregation in this country as well. Illustratively, Kissinger, as US' Secretary of State, supported the Smith regime and America continued to trade with Rhodesia when the United Nations imposed sanctions on the settler regime. His involvement is blamed on fuelling Angola's civil war and prolonging apartheid in SA and Namibia. He is said to have had a "disdain for black Africa".

In the Middle East, Kissinger's policies were aptly captured by the term strategic ambiguity, which refers to the deliberate use of ambiguous language on a sensitive issue in order to advance some political purpose. It is widely held that this approach had long term repercussions seen in the instability of the region today. - Global | Review & Mail

Marry Mubaiwa, the former wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, was seen kissing a doctor she brought to treat her husband as he lay stricken in a hospital in South Africa.
This was revealed in court this Monday during the cross examination of Chiwenga's aide and former deputy Minister of Health, Dr John Mangwiro in the ongoing trial of the former model, who stands accused of trying to kill the former army general by unplugging his life support during his hospitalisation in 2019.
Chiwenga would be later flown to China, where he underwent remarkable recovery.
During the ongoing trial of Mubaiwa, the court further heard that the doctor in question was actually a veterinary surgeon, whom Mubaiwa inexplicably brought in to treat the ailing Chiwenga in the pretext that he was a family doctor.
Mangwiro told the court that Mubaiwa introduced one Dr Bruce Peck as the best in South Africa and would give the complainant treatment from time to time.
Dr Mangwiro told the court that Dr Willi Leo Seiling, one of the specialists treating Chiwenga, suspected something mysterious about Dr Peck when he saw him kissing with Mubaiwa .
He further submitted that he later learned that Dr Peck was veterinary doctor after Mubaiwa introduced him as a family medical practitioner.
He said Mubaiwa often requested confidential time with the complainant .
The State wants to summon Vice President Chiwenga to testify on December 7 for trial continuation.
On the last sitting Dr Mangwiro told the court that each time Mubaiwa went inside the room in which the Vice President was admitted he would be fit but when she walks out he would be unconscious and ill.
Dr Mangwiro said the complainant's health condition would start deteriorating each time he was brought back to his house.
"Each time we took the complainant out of the country for medication he would come back home well and he would start deteriorating when he gets home, I don't know what would have happened," he said.

In late September, Zimbabweโ€™s environment minister, Mangaliso Ndlovu signed away control over a staggering amount of land โ€” almost 20% of his country โ€” to a little-known foreign company. Blue Carbon was a small, new outfit, not even a year old, has reported today.

There are emerging controversies around carbon credits in the country with interest from other wealthy countries such as Switzerland; and Zimbabwe is among countries in Africa at the centre of this scramble, with Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya making up the list.

Carbon credits, in simple terms, involve the management of forests that absorb carbon from the atmosphere, and maintenance of such resources is said to mitigate . In this system, companies can buy and sell "credits" to companies or instituitions with carbon footprint due to use of fossil fuels. In turn, those that buy the "credits" can show regulators in their countries that they are supporting climate action - and continue to burn fossil fuels.

But the catch is that to maintain these forests or projects essentially means grabbing land, so much much prestine land, like in Zimbabwe's Zambezi Valley (Kariba, Kanyemba, etc) amid accusations, too, that wealthy countries are using the scheme as "greenwashing". As a relatively new phenomenon, it is open to corruption and opens the door to losing control of national wealth rights.

According to reports, Zimbabwe is the 12th largest carbon offsets producer in the world. It delivered over 4 million carbon credits from various projects in 2022.
On the African continent, Zimbabwe ranks top 3 among carbon credit producers, representing about one-eighth of total production.

The unravelling carbon credit land grab follows two other major land grabs ostensibly associated with new energy transition: Green Fuel, owned by mogul Billy Rautenbach, controls vast tracks of land to grow sugar for ethanol. Ethanol blends with petroleum fuels such as petrol and diesel and reduces quantities of fossil fuels burnt. In Zimbabwe, the other cause was to reduce import bill.

At the same time, lithium companies -which produce a raw material for batteries to power electric vehicles and other renewable energy solutions - are also being allocated hundreds of hectares of Zimbabwe's land.

The question is, are people like Minister Ndlovu and the Government President fully aware and accountable for these developments that could have wide implications on Zimbabwe's economic sovereignty and rights over natural resources?
