Building Youth Urgency in Local Governance Processes. 💡 📍

On Saturday, 25 January 2025, The BIG Conversation, with the support of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Zimbabwe, held an intensive half-day training on the fundamentals of social accountability and citizen journalism in Mutare. The training aimed at enhancing youth participation in Mutare and surrounding rural district councils’ governance processes with a particular focus on strengthening and promoting young people’s access to information. The training targeted participants drawn from community radios, youth-led organizations, climate activists, academia, and The BIG Conversation’s learning partners.

The training aimed at enhancing youth participation in Mutare and surrounding rural district councils’ governance processes with a particular focus on strengthening and promoting young people’s access to information. The training targeted participants drawn from community radios, youth-led organizations, climate activists, academia, and The BIG Conversation’s learning partners.

The training brought together a vibrant group of participants from a wide range of backgrounds, including representatives of community radios, youth-led organizations, climate activists, young academics, and The BIG Conversation's learning partners. By converging participants’ diverse perspectives, the training created a rich and dynamic learning environment, sparking innovative ideas and solutions. The training also strengthened youth agency for local-level social accountability by building the capacities of youth to disseminate information and creating spaces for interface with local elected and appointed leaders.

Local authorities' provision of public goods often fails to satisfy the basic test of availability, accessibility, affordability, and adaptability. The delivery of these public goods rests on the social contract, which gives ‘rights holders’ (including young citizens) the legitimate expectation that ‘duty bearers’ (local government) will deliver on and protect their social rights.

The training revealed a huge information gap between duty holders and duty bearers. To plug that gap, young people’s creativity, energy, and dynamism become key. Solutions are best understood by the affected communities and individuals.

Through this initiative, The BIG Conversation aims to pioneer information sharing in Mutare and surrounding rural districts, ensuring that knowledge and power are equitably distributed. Access to information is a central pillar in building and strengthening citizens’ urgency in demanding social accountability.

The 2024 International Day of the Girl theme is ‘Girls’ vision for the future’.

This year’s theme conveys both the need for urgent action and persistent hope, driven by the power of girls’ voices and vision for the future.

Today’s generation of girls is disproportionately affected by global crises of climate, conflict, poverty and pushback on hard won gains for human rights and gender equality. Too many girls are still denied their rights, restricting their choices and limiting their futures.

Yet, recent analysis shows that girls are not only courageous in the face of crisis, but hopeful for the future. Every day, they are taking action to realize a vision of a world in which all girls are protected, respected and empowered.
But girls cannot realize this vision alone. They need allies who listen to and respond to their needs.

With the right support, resources and opportunities, the potential of the world’s more than 1.1 billion girls is limitless. And when girls lead, the impact is immediate and wide-reaching: families, communities, and economies are all stronger, our future brighter.

It is time to listen to girls, to invest in proven solutions that will accelerate progress towards a future in which every girl can fulfil her potential.
