CAPS United president Farai Jere is eager to see the Green Machine reigning supreme once again in the Premier Soccer League, which they last won in 2016.
In the build-up to the 2025 term, Jere has poured some massive investment into the acquisition of some high-profile players, including the highly rated Kundai Benyu, who once saw action with Scottish giants Celtic.
Juan Mutudza, easily the best ball-career in the league last season, landed at Makepekepe yesterday from FC Platinum, as did his ex-teammates at the Zvishavane miners — Kelvin Mangiza and Brighton Manhire.
And Jere, for a good 53 minutes yesterday, took time to challenge both the new brooms numbering up to 12 and the old guard to display the character consistent with playing for a big team like CAPS United. The veteran administrator and ex-PSL chairman was candid and frank yet retained a professional demeanour as the players attentively listened and occasionally clapped hands.
“What you should know is that, regardless of where you are coming from, the game has changed. “CAPS United is a big brand; the team is big, and you should know that. You should play with the required intensity and efficiency week in and week out.
“You should know what is expected of you at CAPS United. The jersey that you will carry has been donned by some of the greatest stars to emerge from this country, like Shacky Tauro and Joel Shambo (both late).
“CAPS United is different; the expectations are high, and it’s highly demanding. Let me tell you one thing.
“There are three big teams in this league, which include CAPS United, Dynamos, and Highlanders. Here you are at one of those giants, and you should know that pressure is always on you to deliver,” said Jere.
He rallied the 2025 squad that coach Lloyd Chitembwe is assembling to restore the CAPS United pride. “Let’s take the CAPS United brand seriously. You need to double your efforts.
“It is the character that is expected here. If you look at these four guys — Lloyd Chitembwe, Hardlife Zvirekwi, David Sengu, and Alois Bunjira — you should be inspired. These guys had one thing in common: character. That’s what we want you to copy and implement.
“You should not be willing to lose games. We need you to have that spirit, that desire to always win. I am expecting a different CAPS United. I am guaranteeing you resources.”
Jere did not limit his lecture to the field of play, as he also took time to speak about their charges’ post-playing careers, urging them to invest and take life seriously.
“You need to make hay while the sun still shines. You don’t have to be seen saying you are still young.
“You are not getting any younger. Our life is in three cycles. The first 20 years, when your parents are taking care of you; the next 20 years, you are reaching 40; and the next, you will be 60, so be careful with your lives.”
Jere also witnessed the entire training, not for the first time, and he is convinced his coach, Chitembwe, has built a solid squad capable of challenging for the championship title.
He believes the coming season could be the year in which they could bust their title drought that is edging towards a decade now.
CAPS United have also suffered the ignominy of being the only side from among the league’s top three who are yet to win the Chibuku Super Cup, with both their rivals Dynamos and Highlanders having landed their hands on the silverware. DeMbare are the defending Chibuku Super Cup champions.
“If you look at the kind of players we have brought here, you will see that our intentions are very clear; we want to win accolades; that’s very clear,” he added.
“I think this is our year. I am very happy with the material that we have at the team right now. The new guys are showing a lot of excitement, and those who were here last year are also happy with the additions we have made.
“So, we are looking for very exciting times with CAPS United. I would like to promise our fans. This is a different year, and they will enjoy it. We have brought up a monster of a team.
“I am impressed, and the fans should always be happy when the season starts.
“We are looking at winning the league title and also picking the other cups. We are a big team, and we should compete, always.
Some of the new signings at CAPS United include Tanaka Shandirwa, Harmony Nare, Congolese forward Love Raema Bissila Mabiala, and they were by yesterday still negotiating with a Namibian left-back with the view to bring him aboard.
