By virtue of the nature of business we are in, more often than not, we are faced with situations where a client is required to perfom a mini pitch to INTRODUCE THEIR BUSINESS IDEA/MODEL. Besides the demand for eloquence it is vital to master how to grab and maintain attention from your audience.
Why Precise attention grabbing skills?
In a fast and dynamic business environment as the one we have nowadays it is inevitable that YOU, AS AN ENTREPRENEUR, SHALL NEED TO PERFORM YOUR 'FIRST PITCH' VIA VARIOUS COMMUNICATION TOOLS (SMS, EMAIL, PHONE E.T.C). This probability subsequently becomes the necessity that mothers the need to ensure fluency IN ALL COMMUNICATION VEHICLES.
The following may be cardinal in sealing that 'deal of a lifetime'
โช๏ธ Make sure to present yourself confidently not arrogantly.
โช๏ธ Optimistically not Naively
โช๏ธ Opportunistically not Unrealistically
โช๏ธ Knowledgeably not prepositionally
Be sure to make a lasting impression. It is important to note that YOU ARE NOT GOING TO CLOSE EVERY DEAL BUT SHOULD MAXIMISE IN LEAVING YOUR STAMP ON THE MINDS OF ANYONE WHO GIVES YOU AUDIENCE. Your introduction should ring so loud no one can ignore it. An instance I would love to use is when we introduce our business we typically say ,'Hello, I'm .... and I am from Akaunda Business Partner where we are in the business of 'HELPING PEOPLE START THEIR BUSINESSES, MANAGE THEIR BUSINESSES AND/OR GROW THEIR BUSINESSES.' Now tell us, WHO WOULD NOT WANT TO HEAR MORE AFTER SUCH AN INTRODUCTION?' Your guess is just as good as ours on this matter but what is guaranteed is that the resistance to listen after such an introduction is greatly reduced.
How do you keep the attention?
Grabbing the attention of a person is one task, retaining it is another. So how do you maintain the listener's audience unaltered?
1. Maintain a considerable amount of eye contact, enough just to show your sincerity but careful not to end up looking like you are staring. Many people are not comfortable around people who stare. 2 - 3 second 'eye locks' at least every 4 - 6 seconds is quite acceptable in our opinion. The discretion is up to you.
2. Let your voice be sufficiently audible so as to discourage the listener from 'wandering in thought.' Be sure not to end up screaming while you are at it.
3. Wear a smile not a clown face. A 'just' warm smile and consistent 'exhibition of the mouth's white matter is ENOUGH.
4. Let your handshake be 'just' but firm making sure not to subject your colleague to a 'vice grip situation.'
5. Make sure your palms are not sweaty. Sweaty palms are a complete turn off for many.
6. NO CHEWING GUM!
7. Be well groomed making sure not to end up looking like an es**rt. Dress in clean clothes. Fat stains on clothing among many other signs of dirt are a TOTAL TURN OFF.
8. Deodorize yourself. NOWHERE DOES IT SAY YOU MUST WEAR AN EXPENSIVE, SWEET COLOGNE, THE IDEA IS JUST SIMPLE. DON'T VICTIMISE PEOPLE WITH YOUR FOUL SMELLS!
9. Make sure your body language, intonations and gestures play their vitally intended role of EMPHASISING POINTS TO THE LISTENER. Be sure not to end up looking like a choir conductor while you are at it.
10. Be open to criticism and make sure to quickly assimilate the constructive parts and ignore the non progressive parts.
11. ALWAYS PRESENT ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR SUBJECT MATTER
12. Make sure you know what you want. Never mince words.IF IT'S A 'YES' THEN LET IT BE SO. the same applies to the opposite.
13. Never be lured into accepting 'raw' deals due to your lack. As long as you believe in your dream, PROTECT IT AND DON'T SELL IT FOR CHEAP.
