Today, the Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe, joined by organizations such as the Institute for Young Women Development (IYWD) and the Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA), held a march in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The march brought together women and girls from diverse backgrounds, who collectively called on authorities to ensure adequate and gender-responsive service delivery in key areas such as healthcare, safety, education, and economic empowerment.

Participants emphasized the need for targeted measures to address the unique challenges faced by women and girls, urging policymakers to make GBV prevention and response a national priority.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, we reflect on the resilience and strength of young girls in every corner of the world.

In so many communities, it is the girls who rise early, fetch water, prepare meals, and ensure their families are cared for—all while pursuing their education and dreams. Yet, this labour often goes unnoticed.

As we celebrate today, let’s amplify their voices and recognize their critical roles in their homes and societies. Every girl deserves the opportunity to grow, lead, and thrive without the burden of inequality. Let’s work together to create a world where their dreams shine as bright as their determination.

So, there we were, fresh off a media tour, feeling all sorts of accomplished.

Amos Batisayi , our trusty guide, thought it would be a quick stop. We decided to swing by one of 's projects, just to check on progress, you know, the usual.

Little did we know we were about to record, by sheer luck and total amateurism, one of the most genuine stories of hunger we've ever heard.

The villagers spoke of a hunger code called Zero Zero One. Now, if you’re wondering, that’s not some secret formula for survival. Out of nowhere, the villagers started talking.

They weren’t asking for help; they were just telling it as it is. One of the elders explained their hunger "code"—Zero Zero One.

No, it’s not a spy thriller. It’s the cruel reality where they manage just one meal a day, usually late in the afternoon.

We couldn’t believe it. Even the children, yes the kids, are forced to survive on that single meal.

The famine has hit hard, but it’s not just the empty plates causing chaos. With hunger, comes frustration. And with frustration, comes violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) is on the rise, as families grapple with the unbearable stress of survival.

There was no polished script, no fancy equipment, just me, trying to hold it together while capturing a story we’ll never forget.

So yeah, we turned this raw footage into an amateurish documentary—don’t expect Hollywood-level glitz, but we promise you, it’s real.

Real stories, real pain, real resilience.

A young boy fetches water at a borehole in Thataisa Ramadhaka village, Chikombedzi. Installed by the Mwenezi Development Training Centre, this water point brings relief to a community battling the devastating effects of climate change. With rivers drying up and water sources becoming scarce, villagers have been walking kilometers to access clean water. This borehole is more than just a source of water—it’s a lifeline in the fight against a deepening water crisis in rural Zimbabwe. Every drop counts in the face of climate change’s unrelenting impact.
