DEAR MUSIC MINISTER
Sometimes you feel less of yourself because you are unable to do what other singers do with their voices.
Do you remember the “cut your coat according to your size” saying?
It is very important in vocal music performance that you select songs that are best for your voice type, vocal range and technical capacity.
You’re not helping your voice singing songs that are bigger than your overall vocal capacity.
The dangers include;
1. Low self esteem that may stem from poor performance of the song.
Many singers choose songs because they like the song or heard someone sing it attractively. It is no bad to like a song, but not every song you like is great for your voice. You may require lots of training to sing some of those songs. Your self esteem can drop as a result of a poor performance and that has a high potential of affecting your future performances.
2. Voice cracks that may result from your struggle with the high pitches in the music.
You may have noticed that you’re a soprano or tenor yet, unable to sing some songs written for sopranos and tenors. It’s not a problem! You need to realize that within the high voices, there are different kinds with different meanings and possibilities. Not every tenor is meant to sing the high C. It is for those with such voice type. If you sing your G and A comfortably, sing songs that do not exceed such pitches or sing appropriate transpositions of such songs while you may engage in training that help build pitch. Don’t pick a song and stress your vocal folds up there. The pain and damage are yours alone.
