If Africa had competent political leaders across the continent, these avoidable tragic incidents would not occur.
It amazes me that anyone with half a brain would want to be president of a rich and resourceful African country, yet they turn a blind eye when they see such preventable tragedies occur.
It also surprises me that those of us on the African continent who are highly educated, exposed, and well-travelled still see this as normal and have no interest in intervening to end these embarrassing tragedies, like the one that occurred on Lake Kivu yesterday.
In the hands of the right people, Africa could turn around noticeably within 24 months, reversing the decline that started over sixty years ago driven by incompetent governments and corruption aided locally and internationally.
What is it about us Africans that makes us lack pride in ourselves, and why are we comfortable with other races mocking us and our deliberate backwardness that is self evident?
Would the world trust global decision making to people who can’t manage a mere lake and a few boats?
We have leaders who buy expensive cars and build mansions with stolen public funds, yet they can’t bring order to a single lake. It is so depressing!
To my educated African brothers and sisters who travel the world regularly, even in your expensive suits and gowns where we are invited, this is what they see in us, regardless of how we wish to differentiate ourselves from those we left behind in Africa.
They see us as khaki, useless and extremely selfish because we can’t even build maternity clinics for our wives to give birth in as in Zimbabwe where 2,500 women die every year giving birth.
Even in our designer suits and big houses in Europe or America where we have made it, other races become increasingly curious to understand how a continen
