Happy birthday Charles Mahlaba Banda

Charles "Mahlaba" Banda is a multitalented artist from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, born on this day in 1987. A former professional footballer, he transitioned to the arts, adopting the name "Mahlaba" in honor of his late father, Simon "Dr Mahlaba" Banda, a legendary Imbube musician. As director and performer of Sunduza Dance Theatre, Mahlaba continues his father's legacy. He is also a solo musician, releasing two albums, including "Feelings Imizwa" (2023). Mahlaba has received numerous award nominations, including two ZIMA nominations and a win in 2021 for Best Jazz. He has also been nominated for Best Alternative Music at the Bulawayo Arts Awards.

Kasi Team, it’s time to rally behind one of our own. Nozinhle Gumede is a vibrant young woman from Bulawayo eCowdray Park. Nozinhle is a student at Lupane State University. She is also climate diplomat where she acts as a voice for the people, representing our country at different international climate conferences. She founded a nonprofit organization called Mainah Trust where she teaches communities how to deal with the devastating impacts of climate change. Nozinhle is currently running for Miss Universe Zimbabwe and she has made it as a top 30 Finalist. She needs our support to make it to the Top 18. Multi award winning author and poet, Philani A Nyoni releases a new book.

ABOUT THE BOOK.

On its way to becoming an epic, the oldest poetic form in the world, There have been traumatic versions of Testament that have been long listed for the African Writers’ Award (2020), developed and staged at the Almasi African Playwrights Conference (2021). This version would not exist without the extensive testing and development these and other platforms allowed us, we would not have managed to fulfill the mission which was to write over a hundred pages of story in one voice uniting the prose, drama, and verse in an ancient and yet innovative way.

The cover artworks are images created by Charles Nkomo for his exhibition Conscience. It opened at the National Art in Bulawayo on Friday the 22nd of March. The design is put together by Busani Ncube, who also handles the beautiful illustration that accompany the text. We are also grateful to Noluthando Ncube for her editing work; because even an editor needs someone watching their back.

Hip Hop lovers are in for a treat as the 2023/24 season of Battle Rap kicks off today on the 7th of October 2023 at the Bulawayo Public library 2 pm. According to Sage, Battle Rap is a sport where rappers face off for the highest honour in usually in a bout of 3 rounds. The idea behind this battle of words is to promote creativity and lyricism. This year’s rap battles promise to be exciting with Brecco facing off Westcoast, Die Devon against Phantom Cyber, Thirsty E vs Blackspear as well as Chester against Brailaizer.
The DGV Battles have been in existence for a decade now and they are they are the premier of the Rap Battle League of Zimbabwe. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the battles aim to promote spoken word, hip hop culture and young artists as this is this is a viable career path for them. Several Artists have been on the DGV Rap Battle stage and have experienced career advancement including Asaph, Luminous, Llady Eef who have grown into award winning artists. The likes of Naboth Rizla and Sage M One have become renowned poets in the city with Naboth claiming many accolades as the best journalist and promoter among the awards.
