H**P ACADEMY SETS NEW STANDARD FOR CANNABIS EDUCATION IN AFRICA

Cheeba Cannabis and H**p Academy, Africa's pioneering cannabis institution, has achieved a prestigious international accreditation, a significant milestone demonstrating the novel academy's commitment to stimulate growth in cannabis and h**p industry, globally.

Established over five years ago as an educational start-up, Cheeba Cannabis and H**p Academy is instrumental in offering courses, including Cannabis Industry 101, Cannabis and H**p Business Mastery Programme, and Cannabis Production and Management.

The higher certificate in cannabis production and management is accredited by Council on Higher Education (CHE), an internationally recognized accreditation body. The program is registered at National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 5.

In a statement, Trenton Birch, CEO and co-founder of Cheeba Africa, expressed pride in this achievement, stating, "Our four-year journey to reach this accreditation milestone has been rigorous, but we are excited to set this benchmark in cannabis education."

Birch stressed the significance of this achievement for Africa, saying, "It's a proud moment for our industry and for Africa as we lead the way in one of the most critical sectors of our time."

And Linda Siboto, Cheeba Director and co-founder, added, "It's an honour to be part of this transformative initiative, which recognises the role of education in developing a world-class cannabis industry."

Meanwhile, Munyaradzi Chedondo, marketing and business development director at African Medical Cannabis Biotech Pvt Ltd, a Zimbabwean company, believes that Cheeba Africa's move could transform the industry.

"Cheeba Africa has taken a great initial step," Chedondo said.

"However, it's high time we see medicinal cannabis incorporated in the medical fields," He said.

Chedondo pointed out that the industry faces challenges, including lack of markets.

"In Zimbabwe, we started with about 47 licenses for medical cannabis in 2019, but when it came to renewal, only 5 companies remained," Chedondo revealed.

This development comes at a time when Botswana also considering courting cannabis amid efforts to bolster it's investments.

ZAMBIA METROLOGY AGENCY
SEIZE UNDERWEIGHT SHOE POLISH IN MANSA

The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has seized about 552 tins of underweight shoe polish products in Mansa following a public compliant raised on suspicion of the product being underweight.

On the 9th of December 2024, a consumer complaint was received by ZMA regarding shoe polish purchased from Palsana Wholesale Shop in Mansa. The complaint indicated that customers were returning the product due to concerns over its weight, suggesting that the tins were underweight.

In response to the complaint, the Agency initiated an investigation and conducted inspections at Palsana Investment Limited, a wholesale distributor based in Mansa. During the inspection, it was confirmed that the suspected tins of shoe polish were indeed underweight, falling below the declared weight.

As a result of the inspection a total of 552 tins of the underweight shoe polish were seized to prevent the distribution of non-compliant products on the market.

This action aligns with ZMA's mandate to ensure compliance in fairness in trade and protection of consumers from substandard goods.

ZMA urges all traders and wholesalers to adhere to established metrology standards and ensure that products sold to consumers are accurately labeled and meet the required weight specifications.

DRC PROPOSES BORDER LINE REVIEW AFTER DEADLY SHOOTOUT

By Lovemore Sondashi

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has proposed a review of its border demarcations with Zambia following the death of a Zambian National Service (ZNS) officer in a cross-border clash.

During a bilateral meeting in Ndola, DRC's Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralisation, and Traditional Affairs, Jacquemin Shabani, highlighted the importance of reassessing the boundary lines to prevent future conflicts.

The minister has emphasized that the review could help avoid misunderstandings and further loss of life, like the one seen in Sunday’s tragic incident.

The altercation occurred when ZNS Staff Sergeant Corinthians Kaputa was killed in a shootout with DRC soldiers.

The conflict arose after Zambian soldiers intercepted smugglers, who fled into the DRC and falsely accused the Zambians of crossing the border.

Zambia’s Defence Minister Ambrose Lufuma proposed the formation of a joint task force aimed at strengthening border security and cooperation.

Both countries have signed a communique to solidify their commitment to peace and collaboration.

OVERCOWDING HITS ZAMBIA'S CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES

According to 𝐙𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐚'𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭, the correctional facilities and prisons are overcrowded, have poor ventilation, a lack of proper sanitary facilities, a lack of beds and bedding that force up to four inmates to share a bed, and have insufficient restrooms and toilets. Some inmates are forced to sleep on the floor, and this lead most inmates' health being adversely affected due to inadequate infrastructure, which exacerbates the spread of diseases.

A situation calls for 𝐜𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬' 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐦 on issues like overcrowding and rights violations and societal mindset transformation on how society views people who are incarcerated and those released from correctional facilities.
