COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TO REMAIN OPEN AMIDST ESCALATING CHOLERA CASES

The Higher Education Authority says the directive by Education Minister Douglas Syakalima to postpone the opening of schools for term 1 of 2024 academic year in view of the cholera outbreak in the country, does not apply to colleges and universities.

Authority Acting Director-General Dr. Martin Mushumba says the directive is only meant for primary and secondary schools across the country.

Dr Mushumba has since directed all institutions of higher learning in the country to comply with the Ministry of Health guidelines to create a safe school environment in view of the cholera outbreak.

He says all institutions must conduct extensive preventive, monitoring and maintenance activities in order to provide a safe learning environment, so that learners, academic staff and other school staff are not at risk during the provision of education.

Further, Dr Mushumba says this situation is subject to review by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Health depending on how the pandemic evolves.

Public Protector concerned with reports of unlawful impounding of cars by Zambia Police Service

Lusaka, Thursday 4th January, 2024- The Public Protector Mrs. Caroline Sokoni has noted with concern reports of the increase in unlawful impounding of motor vehicles by some traffic police Officers.

The Public Protector notes that the impounding of motor vehicles by Zambia Police has increased even in circumstances where the offense committed is not impoundable under the law.

Mrs. Sokoni has observed that in most cases members of the public are law-abiding and are willing to pay fines that go into government coffers. However, some traffic police officers prefer impounding vehicles as a scheme to solicit bribes from inconvenienced motorists.

The Public Protector notes that the act by traffic police officers is obstructing the government’s fight against maladministration and corruption when law enforcement officers must not be the ones who cause these vices to flourish.

Mrs. Sokoni says as an institution mandated by the law to ensure adherence to processes and procedures in public institutions, the Office of the Public Protector will not allow a few officers under the Traffic Department dent the image of the Zambia Police Service due to their failure to follow the laid down procedures when carrying out their duties.

She has called on the Zambia Police Service Traffic Officers to be professional and avoid procedural improprieties as they execute their duties that lead to the impounding of motor vehicles without proper justification and victimization of members of the public.

The Public Protector has also appealed to members of the public who have been victims of police impounding their vehicles for questionable reasons to obtain the name and service number of police officers and the police station manning the roadblock and report to the Office of the Public Protector or the Police Public Complaints Commission.

It’s easy to go through life making decisions based on what other people will think. Jesus said that the problem with the Pharisees was that everything they did was for show—what they wore, the money they gave, the seats of honor they took. They were doing it all to impress people, to build their own egos. The problem with living image-driven is that we can’t be authentic. We have to hide our weaknesses or others may think less of us. We have to play up to others to stay in their favor. We have to drive this, wear this, and be seen with these people. It’s great to look good, be successful, and carry yourself with confidence. But it crosses the line when you become driven by your image and run everything through the filter of how it’s going to make you look.

Don’t live under the pressure of trying to impress others, hiding how you feel, and acting as though everything’s okay. Get off that treadmill that will wear you out, stop your creativity, and steal your joy. Be real.

Choma Central Police Station is holding M/Enoch Lukasha Roderick aged 42 of H/No. R64 Chandamali Compound, Choma also Director for MINO AGRI Businesses, Choma for eight (08) counts of Obtaining money by false pretences of total amount K101,500 from eight Complainants.

According to a statement Issued to Southern Classic Media by Southern Province Commissioner of Police Auxensio Daka, Lukasha was granted Police bond but failed to raise sureties.

He is still in Police custody awaiting court proceedings as the docket is already forwarded to NPA.
