Man who received first pig kidney transplant dies

(BBC) The first man to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant has died two months after the operation, the hospital which carried out the procedure has said.

Richard "Rick" Slayman, 62, was suffering with end-stage kidney disease before undergoing the operation in March.

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) said on Sunday there was no indication his death was a result of the transplant.

Transplants of other organs from genetically modified pigs have failed in the past, but the operation on Mr Slayman was hailed as a historic milestone.

In addition to kidney disease, Mr Slayman also suffered from Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. In 2018, he had a human kidney transplant, but it began to fail after five years.

Following his pig kidney transplant on 16 March, his doctors confirmed he no longer needed dialysis after the new organ was said to be functioning well.

"Mr Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation," MGH said in a statement.

Xenotransplantation is the transplanting of living cells, tissues or organs from one species to another.

MGH said it was "deeply saddened" at his sudden death and offered condolences to his family.

Mr Slayman's relatives said his story was an inspiration.

I didn’t murder my husband, Shikapwasha’s widow tell court

BEFORE a packed courtroom yesterday, 73-year old Jane Lusengo faced everyone and denied killing her husband, Lt General Ronnie Shikapwasha.

Looking fragile and sometimes absent-minded, the mother and grandmother appeared before lady Justice Conceptor Chinyanwa Zulu for plea.

Lusengo a housewife of plot no.477 Ibex Hill became a widow on January 15, 2024 when she allegedly pulled the trigger on retired Zambia Airforce Commander lt general Shikapwasha and damaged his internal vital organs.

A double barrel shotgun is the weapon that is said to have been used by Lusengo to ‘end’ the life of her beloved husband in a marital discord.

As a result of her alleged actions in rage, the grandma stands charged with murder contrary to Section 200 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Zambian Laws.

When taking plea Lusengo who donned her widow’s weeds with a pink scarf, seemingly had challenges in grasping the charge which was read out to her by a court marshal, a ms Ngandwe.

Despite the little hurdles in comprehending what was being communicated, Lusengo said she understood the charge and denied killing her husband.

After denying killing her husband to whom she had been married for over 40 years, mortuary silence gripped the court room before the scores of relatives who had turned up for the hearing quietly trooped out one by one.

Notable among the relatives who attended the court session was the celebrity couple of her son Tivo and his songstress wife Salma Dodia, including freshly baptized former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa.

Judge Zulu set May 9, for commencement of trial.

ZNS LAUNCHES PROBE IN FAKE ONLINE JOB OFFERS

Zambia National Service (ZNS) and other stakeholders have instituted investigations to book online fraudsters who are extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public by offering them fake employment opportunities in the defence wing.

The swindlers, who have created fake WhatsApp and Facebook accounts under the name of ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi, are tricking people into paying money for fake job advertisements.

ZNS chief of public relations and liaison colonel Mable Nyone said the fraudulent accounts are being used to demand that individuals seeking employment opportunities in the service pay varying amounts of money to the commander as a prerequisite for employment.

Col Nyone said in a statement regretting that some unsuspecting members of the public have continued to fall victim to the deceptive schemes.

Lost husband at UTH, recalls wife name, Diana

IF your name is Diana and married to a Mathews Mwamba who had gone missing since April, your spouse could be the one lying on the sick bed of the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

UTH is searching for the family of the patient, who has been receiving treatment since April 22, 2024.

The patient recently started to talk and he could only remember his name, that of his wife and his area of residence name and Kanyama.

Mwamba was referred to UTH from Kanyama First Level Hospital and has been receiving medical care at EO1 adult hospital where he was admitted on April 22, 2024, in a critical condition.

UTH public relations officer Nzeba Chanda disclosed that his condition has stabilised which has prompted the hospital's appeal to locate his family.

Chanda revealed that despite Mwamba's stay, no visitors or acquaintances have come forward.

"From the time he was admitted we have never received any visitor or friend. That's why we have decided to go on camera because we believe that when you show the camera people will locate him," said Chanda.

"He's saying his from Kanyama, he's saying he's got a wife called Diana and he has a wedding band which shows that he's married."

Chanda appealed to the general public to help in sharing Mwamba's information so that it can reach his relatives.

"We urge any family members or acquaintances to visit Mwamba at the hospital, as it is vital for his well-being and to facilitate his return home," said Chanda...https://kalemba.news/local/2024/05/06/lost-husband-at-uth-recalls-wife-name-diana/

MAN JAILED FOR SELLING FAKE PLOT TO TEACHER

A 39-year-old Zambia Army employee in Ndola has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for obtaining K170,000 from a teacher on the pretext that he had land he was selling.

Mathews Musonda, of Mitengo, was convicted and sentenced for obtaining money by false pretences.

On February 7, 2019, Musonda stole K170,000 from Miles Malakashi, 49, a teacher of Dola Hill, on the pretext that he was selling a plot within the same area.

Details of the matter are that after Malakashi got her benefits from Government, she started looking for a plot.

According to court records, Ms Malakashi came across Musonda, who said he had a 40x40 metres plot he was selling in Dola Hill.
She bought two plots from the convict at a total sum of K170,000 and paid all the money to him.

Ms Malakashi was given some receipts which showed that they were from Ndola City Council (NCC) but they later turned out to be fake.

Former President Edgar C. Lungu writes:Good morning, Zambia.

I know we have our own many challenges here at home. But our founding fathers such as Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, Kwame Nkrumah, Mzee Julius Nyerere and many others taught us one thing,
‘Ubuntu’ in the spirit of Pan Africanism. If your neighbour has a problem, so do you.

This morning, I call upon you to join me and Madam Esther Lungu to stand with my brother, H.E President William Samoei Ruto to mourn over four hundred Kenyans that have died needlessly due to violent floods caused by a tropical cyclone.

Four hundred dead people in a brief time is a national tragedy especially that this catastrophe in your country continues to escalate. I know the devastation of this disaster on individuals, families, communities and Kenya in general is overwhelming and unbearable!

We mourn with you as Zambians, we mourn with you as Africans, and we mourn with you as brothers and sisters in the Lord! We appeal to all African countries, regional bodies and the international community to respond adequately to this emergency you have at hand.

Today, it’s Kenya, tomorrow it maybe Zambia, South Africa, Egypt or Nigeria. In the spirit of ‘Ubuntu’ and Pan Africanism as Dr. Kenneth Kaunda taught us, we send our deepest condolences message to you and the people of Kenya!

H.E Edgar Chagwa Lungu
Sixth President of Zambia.

I'm case you missed it:KASAMA LECTURER KILLS SELF

A 28-year-old lecturer of Lukashya Trades Institute in Kasama has committed su***de by hanging.

However, the reason behind the su***de has not been established yet.

Michael Mukabila, of Misamfu Resettlement, committed su***de on Thursday morning, a day after he participated in the International Labour Day activities for the institution.

His mother, Angela Kalimaposa, 56, who was living with him, reported the su***de to the police. Mukabila was married but his wife was in a different location.

Northern Province police commanding officer Lucky Buumba said in a statement that Mukabila was in good health on Wednesday and even marched in commemoration of International Labour Day.

Ms Buumba said Mukabila later phoned his wife around 19:00 hours and had a normal conversation with her before he slept.

She said the victim woke up the following morning and again phoned his wife, whom he wished well together with their daughter before he left for a walk around the farm.

“The victim’s body was later found hanging to a tree by his neighbour after they began searching for him,” Ms Buumba said.

She said the death was later reported to the police officers, who visited the scene and confirmed that it was a su***de case.

Ms Buumba said the victim’s body has been taken to Kasama General Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem and burial.

And Vice-President Mutale Nalumango says the collaboration between Government and the Church is not merely a matter of policy.

Mr Mweetwa, who dismissed claims that there is discord between the New Dawn government and the Catholic Church, said in Monze the Church will continue to play an important role in national development.

“Reports insinuating discord between the UPND and the Catholic Church are baseless fabrications,” Mr Mweetwa said.

AFTER failing to fight his own spiritual battles, a pastor of African Methodist Church in Kawambwa District has sought the services of three witchdoctors, who have all linked the clergyman’s Satanic attacks to his mother.

Reverend Ferguson Mwelwa, whose mother has since gone into hiding after being accused of bewitching him, said he and his wife have tried to exorcise the demonic forces causing mysterious fires in the house but have failed.

In a desperate move to find help, reverend Mwelwa revealed his predicament to Chief Munkanta, who confirmed the matter through his retainer, Andrew Chiwasa.

Reverend Mwelwa, who is a teacher by profession, told Sunday Mail in a telephone interview on Friday that the traditional doctors also revealed to him that his mother was allegedly responsible for the death of his brother and father, who died mysteriously in separate incidents on the same day.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says qualified teachers and nurses country-wide volunteering their services in public institutions should be given priority in the next recruitment exercise.

President Hichilema said those volunteering their services mean well for the country and are doing a commendable job in service provision in the health and education sectors.

The President urged State House staff to ensure that the decision is implemented accordingly because he does not want to make empty promises.

President Hichilema said this during a huge public rally at Kaunda Square grounds in Kasempa yesterday as part of his working visit to North-Western Province.

“I know there was no cholera in Kasempa but in the next recruitment of nurses, those volunteering should be given priority in Kasempa, North Western Province, and the country as a whole,” he said.

ZAMBIA and China will this month jointly host the China-Zambia High Quality Development Forum to implement some of the agreements that were sealed by President Hakainde Hichilema during his visit to China last year.

President Hichilema visited China last September at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, and a number of agreements were reached by the two heads of state.

Following his visit to China, an economic zone owned by a Chinese company has been opened in Chibombo, followed by the chairman of the board of China Nonferrous Mining Corporation visiting Zambia and announcing an additional US$1.3 billion in the next five years.

Other developments that have culminated from the visit include the dewatering of Shaft 28 mine in Luanshya to pave way for mining activities, the implementation of the public private partnership (PPP) Chingola-Kasumbalesa road project and the revitalisation of Tazara.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has urged Zambians to report non-performing government officials, including Members of Parliament, to him for further action.

President Hichilema warned that he will not hesitate to “put aside” anyone who is not willing to work.

The President said government officials and elected leaders are in office to work for the people and that non-performance will not be condoned.

President Hichilema’s remarks come in the wake of complaints by some Chavuma residents that they have not benefited from Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

This was during a public rally in Chavuma where he addressed several residents who welcomed him in the district as part of his working visit to North-Western Province.

SO**MY ON WIFE: MAN NABBED

Police in Mwandi, Western Province, have apprehended a 43-year-old runaway man of Livingstone who would allegedly tie his wife and then allegedly sodomise her.

Simataa Simataa was apprehended in Mwandi and transferred to Livingstone on Wednesday where the suspected unnatural offence was committed.

Southern Province police commanding officer Auxensio Daka said Simataa is alleged to have performed the alleged act on his wife this year between March 29 and April 14.

Mr Daka said the victim first suffered the suspected unnatural act on March 29 during their routine s*x, when Simataa ordered otherwise.

“The victim felt a**l pains and blood started oozing from her a**s and had difficulties when passing stool,” he said.

“A week later, the suspect again told the victim that he wanted to sodomise her but she refused… he then got a rope and tied her hands and then sodomised her once again,” Mr Daka said in a statement.

He said the pattern of allegedly having s*x against the order of nature continued each time Simataa wanted to make love until the wife could no longer manage to hold on to her stool and developed a**l complications.

The matter was reported to police on April 22 but Simataa was allegedly on the run until he was apprehended in Mwandi.

Twasanta! Twasanta bingi ba Kasempa for the warm welcome today.

It is in Kasempa where an individual was illegally and after issuing threats given 57, 000 hectares of land, but we will not allow this to be done because land belongs to everyone and especially the local people.

Any illegal land allocation will not be tolerated in our country and under our watch.

We also appeal to members of the public to desist from selling land anyhow whenever they are allocated, and this is either at traditional or state levels.

God no longer creates land. Therefore, we call on every Zambian out there to acquire and invest in land because of the benefits that are enormous.

With our vast and integrated agriculture programme, investing in land by citizens has our full support, and this is why under various ministries, affordable credit facilities, including for traditional leaders, have been made available.

Ba Kasempa, ne ba Kamusongolwa bonse, twasanta bingi mwane.

Ki Bukiji! Bukiji!

May God bless our country.

The Zambian Republican President writes:Fellow citizens,

Very few of you may know that yesterday, there were eight local government by-elections across seven provinces of our country. This went largely unnoticed due to the peaceful environment in which they were conducted.

Despite intense campaigns and lobbying by the ruling party and our colleagues from the opposition, the elections proceeded without any reports of violence. This is a stark contrast to past elections, which were often marred by disturbances during our colleagues' tenure. This exemplifies what democracy is about: harboring diverse political views while maintaining peaceful coexistence.

Congratulations to the UPND for winning all eight ward by-elections. The biggest winners here are democracy and the voters.
