EDGAR WAS BETTER THAN HH -KAMBWILI

Chishimba Kambwili has said that losing PF leader Edgar Lungu was far better than President Hakainde Hichilema.

And Kambwili has expressed optimistic that he will win 2026 elections.

Asked if he will win the PF leadership, Kambwili said that this is a clear matter that PF needs his leadership now than ever before.

He however says anyone who will block him from vying for the PF leadership will face his group, in an apparent reference to his newly recruited security team headed by Kalimanshi.

PF goes to the convention very soon and the party holders are demanding for 1 million from each person wanting to be leader.

So far, Lungu, Mundubile, Christopher Kang'ombe, Tasila Lungu, Kambwili, Emmanuel Mwamba, Lubinda, Kampyongo are all eyeing the same.

The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and bus operators today held a consultative meeting, to consider the request by transport operators to increase bus fares.
The proposed increase in bus fares will only be effected after approval by all concerned stakeholders including the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.

The move is in line with the conditions pursuant to which the Road Service Licences (RSL) are granted.According to subsection 12 (d) of Section 108 of the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002 underscores that a person applying for a Road Service Licence and a holder of such a licence applying for its variation, shall submit to the Director the rate of fares of the proposed services.

The meeting which was also attended by the Consumers Rights Association of Zambia, Passengers Association of Zambia and the Bus Drivers Association of Zambia to discuss the proposed increase in bus fares comes in the wake of the increase in fuel pump prices by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) announced on 31th March 2022.

UNZA Begins Selling Mealie Meal From Its Maize Milling Plant.

The University of Zambia (UNZA) has launched its first UNZA Milling Plant sales outlet to kick start the selling of mealie meal at the Great East Road campus. Speaking during the launch, UNZA Vice-Chancellor, Prof Luke Evuta Mumba, says the K26 million UNZA Milling Plant is a result of the government-to-government initiative between the Government of the Republic of Zambia and the People’s Republic of China through the presidential milling initiative.

“In July 2017 the Government of the Republic of Zambia graciously agreed to give one of the 3 milling plants donated by the Government of the Republic of China to the University of Zambia,” Prof Mumba said.

The Vice-Chancellor further says the UNZA Milling Plant project will serve two-fold purposes which include developing and offering programmes in milling science, a programme offered only by South Africa and Kenya in the region, as well as the processing of maize into maize products for income generation.

“The UNZA Milling Plant is thus a gift by the Government of the Republic of Zambia to University and, approximately, K26 million significant investment has been pumped into this venture,” he added.

Prof Mumba confirms that the milling plant systems, whose construction works finished last year, have been tested and gauged for effectiveness and efficiency. The UNZA milling plant has a capacity to produce 40 tons per day and is currently producing breakfast mealie meal (K135 per 25kg bag), roller mealie meal (K100 per 25kg bag), and maize bran (K2 per 1kg).

Five senior members of staff sent on forced leave - Ministry of Health

THE Ministry of Health has confirmed that five of its senior members of staff who include two directors have been sent on forced leave in connection with the recruitment of the 11,200 health workers.

Health Permanent Secretary for administration George Magwende confirmed yesterday that the five have been sent on one-month forced leave to allow for investigations in the matter.

The five include director - human resource, Fredrick Mwila and his assistant, Dennis Siamphwisi.

Others are director- planning, Henry Kasembe, chief human resource administrator, Ireen Bwalya, and senior human resource officer, James Makasa.

Dr Magwende has told Times of Zambia in an interview that the officers were asked to stay away from work for a month which may be prolonged or shortened, depending on the outcome of the investigations.

He explained that that in the work running to the much-anticipated recruitment of the 11,200 health workers, it was discovered that there was a huge discrepancies between the actual information on the ground and what was on paper.

"We want to verify because in our work running to the recruitment there was huge discrepancy between what we had and the actual...there were discrepancies in the number of facilities, for example…

"The discrepancies… were quite alarming so it is important for us to check the authenticity of the data that we have and what is on the ground because these are numbers we base on when we are planning and
funding,” Dr Magwende said.

He said disciplinary action would be taken against the officers should investigations prove that there were deliberate commissions of the errors.

Dr Magwende said the resources in the country were scarce and the ministry could not afford dropping a ngwee because every Zambian was expecting that ngwee to be used prudently.

He said the ministry was being cautious in the utilisation of public resources by acting swiftly whenever they suspected something fishy.

RUSSIA 'WARNS' ZAMBIA

By OLIVER SAMBOKO

WE hope in future Zambia will vote based on its national interests and maintain the existing partnership relations with Russia, Russian deputy Ambassador to Zambia, Dmitry Yudin has said.

Zambia was among 141 nations that voted to ‘reprimand’ Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and demanded that Moscow stop fighting and withdraw its military forces, an action aimed at diplomatically isolating Russia at the UN.

Mr Yudin said in an interview that considering the historically friendly Zambian-Russian relations, his country expected another decision from the Zambian partners.

“Our hope is that in the future, friendly Zambia will vote based on its national interests and maintain the existing partnership relations with Russia,” he said.

The deputy Ambassador said while Zambia is a sovereign and independent state, and Russia respects its decisions at the international arena, including the UN, taking into account historically friendly Zambian-Russian relations, Russia expected another decision from the Zambian government.

He said Russia is aware that the United States and Western countries organized the strongest pressure on the positions of independent countries in order to support their resolution and also aware of the fact that there are a lot of facts when the United States literally blackmailed the governments of independent states if they did not vote according its wish.

Mr Yudin also said Russia has no intention of imposing sanctions against Zambia.

“We continue to assume that Zambia is our friendly partner and hope that both Russia and Zambia will take it into consideration in future decision-making,’ said the deputy Ambassador.

He said Russia has never initiated sanctions against any state, adding that in recent years, the sanctions imposed by Russia against the United States and Western countries are a mirror response to their previously imposed unilateral sanctions against Russia.

Meanwhile, Mr Yudin also explained that Russia is not going to occupy Ukraine, but only wanted to ensure Ukraine became a peaceful, neutral country with a peaceful ideology and establish friendly relations with Russia and respect the rights of Russians and other people living on its territory.

He said even before the start of the special operation, Russia offered Ukraine and its sponsors, represented by the United States and NATO, to sign an agreement as a legally obliged document, which would clearly indicate the need to give the Russian Federation guarantees of its security.

“However, Western countries did not give a clear answer to the posed question, on the contrary, they began to supply a non-defensive weapons and equipment to Ukraine. Under these conditions, Russia decided to conduct a special operation in Ukraine to enforce peace,” he said.

CHITIMUKULU CONDEMNS UNPRINCIPLED MALE NURSES

Paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba People yesterday said he is alarmed at reports of lack of privacy by young male-midwives nurses that deliver elderly and young expectant mothers.

The Mwine Lubemba says the situation is therefore forcing old pregnant ladies in his chiefdom to shun antenatal services as they feel shy being attended to by uncultured younger male-midwives. The chief however said young girls feel good being attended to by the same young male nurses but they are also shunning because of these same male nurses telling people that 'ulya nalimutambila pakumupapisha'.

Paramount Chief Chitimukulu said this when a team of officials from the Health Professions Council of Zambia, or HPCZ paid him a courtesy call.

"We have young male nurses that get excited upon seeing female patients' nakedness. They even narrate what they have seen to their friends in the village whom in turn start laughing at our married women", said the Paramount Chief.

The chief said this after one drunk young male nurse aged 22 was telling a 35 year old married woman with 4 children whom he assisted to deliver saying ati "Imwe mayo iseni kuno munsh*tileko umunani, nalimitambila kale". That annoyed the husband and children who attempted to beat up the nurse.
