Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu insists that police do not need road blocks to control traffic and prevent road accidents.

Some members of the public have criticised the ban of roadblocks, saying it has led to an increase in road traffic accidents.

But Mwiimbu, during his visit to Monze on Friday, said roadblocks are not effective because motorists tip off each other on their presence and only drive carefully when approaching them.

He said motorized patrols are a more effective means to control reckless driving as officers are able to see how drivers are behaving on the road.

Mwiimbu alleged that roadblocks were never intended to curb accidents, but to simply act as a money generating activity for Police officers.

He said his office does not support road blocks as they facilitate for the harrassment of motorists among other illegal activities.

Mwiimbu clarified that he has not stopped law enforcement from controlling traffic on the road, but noted that this must be done through motorized patrols.

Mwiimbu who is also Monze Central Member of Parliament has since advised motorists to drive responsibly and respect the safety of other road users.
