TRIBUTES SALUTE PHILIP PASCAL LEGACY

People from all walks of life converged at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka recently to honour the life and legacy of Philip Pascall, the co-founder and visionary leader of First Quantum Minerals Ltd.

Philip steered the mining giant to global heights, leaving an indelible mark on the world mining industry. Under his leadership, he established an entrepreneurial culture that saw the company formed in 1996 grow from a 10,000 tonnes tailings re-processor with the Bwana Mkubwa project in Zambia to one of the world’s largest copper producers with operations spanning five continents.

Philip’s legacy stretches into the local communities in which FQM operates, bringing improved standards of health and education in often remote places and employing more than 20,000 people globally.

“It all started in 1996 when he came to apply for a hunting concession in Zambia. Out of curiosity for other opportunities, Philip founded Bwana Mkubwa Mine in Ndola which became a solid foundation for FQM. After the privatisation of ZCCM, we extended our operations to the Kansanshi mine and - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2023/11/tributes-salute-philip-pascall-legacy.html

A BOUNTIFUL CATCH

A group of fishermen from Kenya’s coastal county of Kwale sail quietly in a traditional boat, allowing it to gently glide across the deep waters of the Indian Ocean under a night sky dotted with glittering stars.

Abdullai Karim, one of the fishermen, ponders his next fishing expedition as he unloads a bucket full of anchovies (small shoaling fish of commercial importance) locally known as “dagaa” in Swahili.

“I am very excited that dagaa fishing is becoming more profitable here than before, thanks to the recently clinched export deals with China. In the old days, most of us (anchovy fishermen) struggled to find a viable market and mostly relied on a less profitable domestic market, but now exports are reviving the - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2023/10/a-bountiful-catch.html

Mitech market, home to approximately 2000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), is one of Solwezi’s most affordable consumer markets, offering a diverse range of goods and services ranging from fresh and dry foods to clothing and hardware.

For Mary Mbanza Lufupa, 53, Mitech market is her base for most consumer goods that are on demand in the area.

TO***CO: A GLOBAL AGENT OF DEATH

It is growing in popularity especially among young people in Zambia and most drinking places are synonymous with the water-pipe to***co but some experts say a single sh**ha session is the same as smoking 200 ci******es.

In the same way that some people will enjoy a cold Mosi lager or need a cigarette to keep going while they're relaxing, for Janet Zimba, 26, smoking sh**ha is the perfect way to unwind her evening after a hard day’s work.

“I like to enjoy my sh**ha after a long day and every evening after work, I come here (sh**ha lounge) with my mates to relax. If I don't do it, it feels like I'm missing something,” Janet said as she puffs a rhapsody of smoke with her colleagues at Zoran cafe located at Levy shopping complex in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.

ZAMBIA LEVERAGE HITECH IN AGRICULTURE

Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) wants to improve agricultural yields for farmers and puts special emphasis on leveraging technology. Therefore, it organized an agricultural exhibition.

The Union’s president, Jervis Zimba, believes that Zambia can leverage its vast natural resources to provide employment opportunities. With the expansion of agricultural-value chains, predominant unemployment amongst the youth and women will be a thing of the past, he hopes.

ZNFU organized an event called “The 2023 AgriTech Expo” in Chisamba district, together with a civil-society group, DLG Agriculture.

“AgriTech Expo aspires to connect all farmers in different parts of Zambia to deepen economic integration and to boost trade and investment in the agricultural sector – not only in the country but also to serve the export markets in the - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2023/10/zambia-leverage-hitech-in-agriculture.html

ZAMBIA'S MINING SAFETY RECORD RAISE ALARM BELLS

The mining industry’s safety record has raised alarm bells, with 12 fatalities and 14 perilous accidents reported by the Ministry of Mines by June.

Paul Kabuswe, the Mines and Minerals Development Minister, voiced deep concern over the surge in accidents compared to the previous year.

He issued a stern call to stakeholders and mine operators, stressing the urgency of prioritizing worker safety and adhering unwaveringly to mine safety protocols.

Kabuswe highlighted the role of the mining sector, represented by the chamber, in setting an industry-wide example that instills confidence in safe mining practices.

Speaking at the 16th Intercompany Mining First-Aid Competition in Kalumbila District, Kabuswe commended participants for their remarkable first aid skills and stressed the intrinsic link between a secure workplace and healthier, more productive employees.

He underscored the broader impacts, including contributions to sustainable development and a favorable industry reputation. He reiterated his message from the previous year, asserting, "Occupational health and safety is not negotiable! INVISIBLE HAND IN DRUG SHORTAGES

In public health facilities in Zambia, there is an ongoing drug shortage and patients fear not getting vital medicine.

The country’s national drug stock levels currently stand at 53.1 %, way below the World Health Organization’s stipulated minimum threshold of 70 % to 80 %, according to the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA).

“The ongoing shortage of medicine in all government health facilities is worrying. As a diabetic, I take injectable insulin regularly. When I go to the public facility, I am told they have - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2023/09/invisible-hand-in-drug-shortages.html

SISTERS IMPROVE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE

Initially, Naomi thought health care delivery at her local clinic in Lusaka in Zambia seemed well organized, but later she realized how challenging access to antiretroviral therapy was due to the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS, even in the health facility setting.

Naomi, who didn't want her last name used, discovered that she was HIV-positive five years ago but resisted telling anyone, fearing the stigma and having clinic workers disclose her status to others. Then the 35-year-old developed tuberculosis, and then AIDS two years later. On the brink of death, she sought refuge at Our Lady's Health Centre — a Catholic sisters-run health facility in Kalingalinga township, east of Lusaka about 3 miles (about 5 kilometers) — where she was put on antiretroviral drugs.

"Had it not been for this medical facility's unique initiative on access to antiretroviral drugs in our community, I would be - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2023/09/sisters-improve-access-to-health-care.html

MEATS FROM BIRDS

Whereas chicken is a very popular meat in Africa, most of it is imported. Many African nations lack the technology to rear chickens on a large scale and process the meat to acceptable market standards.

It is the same in Zambia. Meats from birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and pigeons among others are consumed. However, in many grocery stores and supermarkets, meat freezers are full of imported meat.

Among the top sources of Zambia’s meat is South Africa, the continent’s leading producer of poultry products. Local farmers are afraid that they may be pushed out of business.

Recognizing the special needs of the agricultural sector, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is looking for ways to promote local farming and value addition. It is estimated that over half a million citizens engage in poultry farming.

For this reason, Zambia’s first-ever international poultry exposition (ZIPEX) was recently held in the capital Lusaka. The goal was to provide a platform for players to network, build long-term relationships and learn about new technologies.

ZAMBIA TUSSLE MAIZE MEAL CRISIS

Many Zambians rely on maize as their main source of food. Popularly known as “mealie meal”, the crop is widely grown in the country for both consumption and export. Now, as harvests reduce, a crisis has ensued.

There is currently a critical shortage of mealie meal in some parts of the country, and it is now common to find long queues of people scampering to grab a bag of maize.

The shortage is in part driven by external demand for maize grain in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other East African countries affected by drought and lack of grain supplies due to the war in Ukraine.

Therefore, prices are skyrocketing. According to the Zambia Statistics Agency retail prices between February 2022 and February 2023 showed that the national average price of a 25 kilograms (kg) bag of mealie meal increased by more than 25 %. A check in most retail shops indicated that a 25 kg bag goes for between K 200 and K 250 ($ 10 to $ 13) on average.

However, it is projected that these prices will surge by about 60 % to reach approximately K 270 and K 350 per 25 kg bag, writes the Farmer’s Journal Africa.

DESPERATE FOR ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES

As South Africans adjust to living in darkness with no end in sight to power outages, many are desperate for alternative energy sources.

Known locally as load shedding, widespread electricity blackouts are carried out multiple times a day by state-owned energy utility Eskom to avoid the total collapse of the grid.

For some people, lack of reliable power supply can be the difference between life and death, as blackouts have become routine, affecting every part of South African society.

But he is unable to fully hide the pain in his eyes caused by the frequent power cuts that are affecting his business, which solely depends on electricity supply from ZESCO, Zambia’s major power utility company.

After dropping out of school, Gondwe went all out to establish himself as an artisan to earn a living in Kalingalinga, one of the slums in Lusaka, Zambia’s capital.

A ROSY VISION OF MANICURE, PEDICURE BUSINESS

The manicure business is booming in Zambia with more technicians spending long hours each day buffing, scraping, painting, and polishing their clients’ nails for a living.

According to latest statistics, global nail care products’ market size was valued at over $19 billion in 2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.2 per cent from 2022 to 2030.

For this reason Rosaria Chola, 30, from Solwezi’s Kyawama Market is earning money by offering nail beautification services for women including manicures, pedicures, nail polish application, nail repair, and hand and foot treatments.

ZAMBIANS CHOOSE CHINESE CURES

China’s ancient healing arts are gaining a strong following in Zambia. Residents of the southern African country are increasingly visiting Chinese-owned clinics offering a variety of ancient cures, including acupuncture, herbal medicines, massage, exercise regimes, dietary therapies, and creams and ointments against aches among others.

Traditional Chinese cures avoid many side effects associated with modern medicine, its advocates say. At least 70% of Zambians use traditional medicine, according to the World Health Organization.

Chinese medical practitioners in Zambia have been happy to meet the growing demand. “I attend to patients suffering from stroke, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, paralysis and diabetes among others,” said Feng Kehong, owner of the Zhong Yi Surgery. She opened the private clinic in 2002, five years after arriving in Zambia.

For Bernard Siwale, a Lusaka based taxi driver, the results of the procedure are worth some discomfort. He turned to the Zhong Yi surgery in Lusaka after modern medicine did not cure a partial paralysis he suffered early this year. “The doctor pricks you with small needles and you - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2023/03/zambians-choose-chinese-cures.html

The media in the southern African country is not strange to news of arrests of foreign nationals for illegal entry or stay in the country. Authorities have also reported intercepting long-distance merchant trucks smuggling people in goods containers.

In this East African country, Oromia is the natural homeland of the delicate Coffea arabica plant, which is driving an insatiable thirst for a beverage that has come to conquer the world. A MISSION TO MAKE WATER SAFE
Isabel Ngugi is among many children and women in Kenya who must walk every day to fetch water not only for drinking, but also for cooking, cleaning and bathing.

Ngugi, 20, wakes up early each morning to help her mother to carry water by pushing a wheelbarrow with a jerry can of untreated water from a tap on the outskirts of the township.

But access to water is not the only problem.

Ngugi lives in Kibera, the biggest urban slum nestled in the heart of Kenya’s capital Nairobi where water pipes run through sewer tunnels, which contaminates the water. For a long time, residents have been suffering from the unhygienic water supply.

“Growing up in this community has really been difficult due to unsafe water that we consume from contaminated sources, as a result of - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2022/12/a-mission-to-make-water-safe.html

LGBTQI RIGHTS REMAIN SENSITIVE ISSUE

The topic of s*xual rights of minority groups remains controversial in many parts of the world.

In Zambia, a fashion event has caused uproar as religious purists and moralists accuse organisers of promoting homos*xuality in the country.

Zambia is still stuck with an archaic law that criminalises homos*xuality and what is broadly termed as “related unnatural acts.” The law has been in existence since 1911 when the country was still under colonial rule and persons accused of homos*xuality can serve a life sentence in prison.

In the past, the topic of homos*xuality has been discussed in the country, often sparked by events or remarks made in support of rights of s*xual minorities (LGBTQI – le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, q***r, inters*x).

The country’s leadership maintains a tough stance against those it considers promoters of minority rights. In 2019, US diplomat Daniel Foote was expelled from the country after making critical comments about a judgement that sentenced two men to 15 years in prison after they were caught having s*x in 2017.

The 2022 “Lusaka July” fashion event has stirred uproar on social media in Zambia as many people accuse its organizers of violating national values.

Critics say that the fashion exhibition event was organised as a platform to cleverly bring attention to the plight of s*xual minorities. People are mainly bothered by the fact that men appeared in women’s dresses and fanciful gowns.

Religious leaders also expressed their disapproval. Father Emmanuel Chikoya, the general secretary of the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), said: “We wish to condemn in the strongest terms activities that violate our values as a nation. This comes in view of the recent events in the country, in particular the Lusaka July festival that has - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2022/12/lgbtqi-rights-remain-sensitive-issue.html

MAKING RIDES CHEAPER

In Zambia, new mobile-phone based applications ease hailing of taxis and make rides cheaper. However, traditional taxi operators claim the development is running them out of business.

There are new, technology-based smartphone applications that use the customer’s phone to detect their specific location using the global positioning system (GPS). The apps are revolutionizing the transport sector globally, instantly connecting the users to the nearest available driver.

Inspired by brands like Uber and Taxify, more ride hailing apps are entering the transport business in Africa. These first became popular in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria.

Now, commuters in Lusaka are excited after the entry of two taxi hailing apps, Ulendo and Yango taxi, into the transport sector.

Wonders of A Versatile Plant

Bamboo, the giant grass, is a plant with the fastest growth, and due to its high productivity rate, is a valuable source for a large number of durable products and sustainable year-long income.

The International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, an intergovernmental organization registered with the United Nations that promotes the growing of bamboo, says the global bamboo economy is now valued at $60 billion, and is a potential income generator for rural communities.

But it was not until recently that widespread commercialization of bamboo began taking root in Uganda and the African continent as a whole, spurring hopes of generating income and creating jobs for the rural poor.

EVs GAIN TRACTION WORLDWIDE

Use of electric vehicles is gaining traction worldwide due to their low carbon footprint.

The governments of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are partnering to invest in production of lithium-ion batteries which power these electric vehicles (EVs).

Zambia and DRC have vibrant mining sectors. They form part of the so-called “Copper belt” which stretches from the Central African Republic, the DRC and Zambia.

This region accounts for the world’s largest supply for cobalt, a mineral used in the production of lithium-ion batteries.

A June 2020 report by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) predicts that some 23 million electric vehicles will be sold over the coming decade. “The market for rechargeable car batteries, currently estimated at $ 7 billion, is forecast to rise to $ 58 billion by 2024,” the UN report says. - https://mbuyotimedia.blogspot.com/2022/09/evs-gain-traction-worldwide.html

In many Zambian schools, students do not have desks to sit during the lessons. In addition, most of the furniture used in schools is imported.

For this reason, the “2,000 Desk project” has been launched in the town of Solwezi by the government to equip school kids with capacity and competences through a youth skills empowerment training programme.

The programme supported by the Solwezi Trades Training Institute (SOTTI) and Kansanshi Mines is creative because it will tackle multiple challenges in Zambia.

Zambia’s Long Walk to Debt Recast

In his quest to jump-start the ailing economy, tackle external debt, tame inflation, create jobs for young people and inspire the confidence of international investors, President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration recently secured a deal in principle with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that it hopes will anchor talks with creditors.

While the debt crisis is once again in the spotlight, stakeholders have been playing hide-and-seek over who is responsible for blocking a comprehensible deal to restructure the country’s debt stock.

Although Zambia seeks to rework as much as $17.3 billion of external debt, it faces a complex test case for international efforts to tackle the looming crisis.

United Kingdom Minister for Africa Vicky Ford recently said that Zambia’s debt restructuring efforts are being delayed by one international creditor that seems to be taking more time to make a decision.

“The New Dawn administration of President Hakainde Hichilema has a duty to the Zambian people to transform the country’s economy, so that it achieves sustainable growth, becomes resilient, more attractive to investors and internationally competitive.
